This lad is a great teacher and one of the only ones that understands there was a lot more to Django than blistering speed

this is a great tutorial, especially for someone who's just getting started in gypsy jazz although I've been playing for 20 years, so not a beginner but still lots to unlearn and relearn! 2 questions about the part at 13:40: - why are the 6 notes in the 2nd bar done with 1-3 and not 1-4? - what do you call those? "alterns", as in alternate picking?

Hi Christiaan, great stuff man, but the tab from the 2nd excercise shows on the E7 a major 2nd and a major 6th but you play in the video a b9 and a b6 (chromatic enclosure)

Great lesson Christiaan. By the way, are you using steel strings for your guitar?
@epsdudez6 жыл бұрын
Yes, gypsy jazz guitars use steel strings. They're most likely Saverez Argentine strings which are the genre favorite.

Epsdude Z is right. Savarez Argentine strings for me!

Will this exercises be beneficial if I don't use a metronome?
@ChristiaanvanHemert Жыл бұрын
My dude, ALWAYS use a metronome when practicing!

Thanks Christian for the lesson. I’ve been resisting learning proper Gypsy picking technique because I’m more comfortable with alternate. However I feel like my skills have plateaued that way so I’m taking the plunge with Gypsy picking. I already see results but I’m wondering, do you ever rest the body of the guitar on your left leg rather than your right? Do you think it’s just a matter of preference or does the right hand technique suffer if you don’t rest the guitar on your right leg (assuming the player is right handed). I have pretty long arms and it almost feels better to rest the guitar on my left leg.

You should definitely do what feels best. That said I know of no good gypsy jazz player with the guitar on their left leg!
