Jet lag was keeping me up in the wee hours of the evening so I decided to make the most of it by going out for a midnight photo mission with the Mamiya 7ii and a roll of Portra 800. I was left with one of my favorite images I've ever taken.

I’m here for Philosophical Brae. The feelings I get when I just get out to shoot are so much better than when I do anything else. Even if I get a bunch of dog shit. It’s like “Okay, you suck but you tried. You’re doing it.” Compared to “Okay, you suck and you didn’t try. You also just wasted thirty minutes looking at monkey reels.” The fear of missing out has taken a lot of people’s creative energy. But missing out is when you actually make shit.

i started shooting film last summer and your videos have always inspired me. i use expired film and all my photos suck so bad... watching this, next to all your other videos, was a source of motivation, i wanted thank you for that. especially when you said you don't appreciate most of your photos because i think they all look great and unreachable. i aspire to get good at it like this one day🙂
@BraeHunziker

Thanks for the comment! It all takes time. I'd also stay away from expired film if possible. It's really unpredictable and can render some poor results if it hasn't been stored correctly. Unless that is the look you're after of course! Probably took me eight years of photography before I even started remotely respecting my work.

Consuming and not creating, that’s so true. No matter what the subject, I force myself to make\take (the jury is still out on if I make or take) an image. It can be, and has been something in my house, my yard, my car, walking the dogs, anything to keep those creative juices going. I absolutely want to shoot night time streets around my area. Not many gun shots around here but I get nervous thinking about some altercation with a home owner seeing me lurking outside. So, I applaud you for going out and doing what you did in this video.

@@thedarkslide Well, if it's that important, the mk1 versions and some mk2s did have bulb mode. Honestly I find it odd people make such a big deal out of "T" mode. I just put my hand over the lens or use a hat, then end the exposure with the film advance or by flipping it from T to 1 second.

Hey man, thanks for this wonderful video, and honest thinking about the process at the end. It's such a thing, about the void of reels, about the consuming, and the speed of consuming, and this times where all this social media is traning us to consume quick all the stuff, even if we don't need it. At this moment i think i feel it, the "romance of photography" from me went away, i think because of lack of motivation, but back in times? why then i had that "motivation"... idk man, sometimes I give myself questions like: - why do i do this or that... - nobody gives a crap about my photos ... I know my text is to tangled up, with pleasure would discuss this topic live :)) To be short: I try the rule of 15 minutes in creation. You start 15 min to force yourself to do something and then, in the way of creating you understand that you want to go fruther and fruther or stop at all cause we all have these burnouts too. Just to think about your impact, someone in Republic of Moldova is doing similar stuff, and finds your videos inspirational. Don't stop. And fk film prices...
@BraeHunziker
@BraeHunziker 5 ай бұрын
Wow, I couldn't have put it better myself. I very much resonate with everything you're saying here. Especially the motivation part. I have found that forcing myself to begin a creative process usually ignites the spark, but sometimes find the motivation to begin is quite difficult. It's something that I think many photographers struggle with. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Cheers!

I understand the thought process behind using 800 iso over 400 iso for the extra stop, but the reciprocity failure of Portra 800 is actually so bad that you actually end up with far longer exposure times than had you just used Portra 400. Kodak themselves don't even provide reciprocity charts for Portra 800 and they officially don't recommend exposures over 1 second long for it. So while Portra 400 will require one stop of extra light you will actually need less exposure time as the film is much better at maintaining its light sensitivity over time.
@BraeHunziker
@BraeHunziker 5 ай бұрын
Oh that's interesting. I use Portra 800 quite a bit while out backpacking and have done some 30-45 minutes exposures with it and got fine results. Perhaps I'll have to do some more tests compared to Portra 400. Thanks for the info.

What are your thoughts on the DJI wireless mics for your videos? Do you just prefer a lav with a wired mic?
@BraeHunziker
@BraeHunziker 5 ай бұрын
Been really interested to try them. I used to use a Rode Wireless Go system but the second you turn your body in a direction where the receiver loses line of sight with the transmitter, the audio would cut out. And often I'm quite far away from the camera so this would have frequently. I switched to the Tentacle Sync timecode system with the TRACK E recorder and love it. Although, the wireless mic would be quite nice.

@BraeHunziker
@BraeHunziker 5 ай бұрын
Yes I've had two of them break on me because they were in moist environments. Otherwise it has been a very solid camera. Due to the amount of magnets in the 67ii, they can easily fail if they are in freezing cold or more humid environments so just be careful. I talk more about this in my Pentax 67ii review that's up on my channel.
