Technical practice is important, but even more so is spiritual preparation. The more I pray going into a service the better I do.

Justin - You continue to impress me with your encouragement that we all must serve one another. I am so grateful for your insight and your reluctance to make yourself the main event. God is the main event. We all must be servants. I am so thankful to you for all our videos and great instruction!

Hi there! Thank you for the kind words, I'm encouraged that we are of like-mind when it comes to ministry philosophy. A hearty amen to God being the main event, always!

Justin you’re so right about this!!!Memorizing the worship set and getting rid of the music stand is so liberating! We’re not quite there yet at my church. But what we’ve been doing is challenge the team to memorize one of the songs from our Sunday setlist (there are 6 total) and encourage musicians to make eye contact with each other and also with the people of God while we play that one song we’ve all memorized. We find that to be less intimidating, easier to accomplish and little by little the goal is to memorize more and more songs within the set. We’ll see where that takes us but hopefully we’ll succeed and the music stand will become less visible on stage. I appreciate your channel…and absolutely luuuv memorizing songs on my Gretsch Falcon lol 😂

Thank you for the kind words, Joe! 6 songs! That's quite a feat to be able to memorise all 6 (especially lyrics for singers). Eye contact is SO important. Not sure if this happens to you, but when I do look at my musicians during the set, some are weirded out ("Why are you looking at me, something must be wrong"), and I have to reassure them I'm just grooving with them. Does the Falcon make it easier to memorise songs? If so, I know which guitar I'm going to get next...(haha)

We are out there to serve God and for God's Glory, not a GIG. If you want a gig get or start your own band. Is not a stage for you to come and show off. Agree. Thank you, Justin! I hope you had fun at the conference!

A big AMEN from me, Javier! Actually, I still applied these tips even when I did play in a rock band outside church. Nobody (clients, promoters, venue staff) likes divas! Indeed, it was a blessed time!

Noodling during sound check. Overplaying. Not paying attention to the actual key of the song (when prep media may be inconsistent). Guilty, guilty, guilty. Prep is so huge and communication too. I do press for these things and even like to pick an instrument that will blend with the other guitarists’ rigs. I seldom get all the intel I want but I do have flexibility to adapt which is crucial. This is why I still like the pedalboard approach as it is easier to pick gain stages and EQ’s and compression on the fly without having to program. It also means that my guitars have more variety in pickup configurations generally. I might sacrifice that one perfect tone but I find adaptation is more important for the overall blend.

Aha, noodling is one of my biggest sins, especially if I found something cool to play that week. Inconsistent prep media isn't your fault, although I can understand cause I still deal with some WL's who send songs and haven't landed on a key, myself included (for some, "roughly there" can be 3 or 4 semitones!)

Really appreciate your videos (and patches) Justin. Authentic, heartfelt, honest, encouraging ... excellent. Excellent tips too. One of my bad habits is/was to noodle around on the guitar in between takes during rehearsal. Got "the look" from band mates and the leader on more than a few occasions!

Thanks for the kind words, Bill! And thank you for downloading my patches too! I hope they're serving you well. I can totally relate to the noodling bit (worse, I did it/still do it when I play live) and yes I know the LOOK! It was much worse when I first "unlocked" the modes after studying Joe Satriani music. Phrygian dominant over a major chord works but can invite the GLARE from the congregation...

My bad habit is that I like to play the pentatonic scale during worship call… and I like to bend the strings like a prince concert and that’s just diva of me 😂I need to chill with that cuz it’s not blending well
@AllAboutWorshipGuitar
@AllAboutWorshipGuitar Жыл бұрын
Hi Johnny, guilty as charged too! I think it used to blend better a while ago, especially Darlene Zschech-era Hillsong.

Heya! Is the HX stomp the last in your chain? It has balanced outputs! So you can run a TS - XLR male out of your HX stomp!
@AllAboutWorshipGuitar
@AllAboutWorshipGuitar Жыл бұрын
Hi Greg! Yes it is. Oh, I realized I meant to say balanced XLR outputs. I never connect my Stomp via the TS-XLR adapters cause I'm scared of accidental phantom power. I've heard phantom power doesn't spoil the Stomp, but after seeing an iPod go up in smoke from phantom power via a TRS-XLR cable, I've always advocated at least a DI box in-between devices and the board.
