Honestly, I don’t mind a little bit realism in a comic book movie, but I think if you try so hard to add complete and total realism, then you lose the comic book aspect which is supposed to be a little fantastical.
@rottensquid2 жыл бұрын
Batman lore is pretty steeped in the 50s-60s weird science genre, the same genre that birthed Spider-Man, Hulk, and Fantastic Four. When you go too realistic, you lose the kind of hokey science fantasy that allows for Clayface, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Man-Bat, even the modern version of the Joker that fell into acid (which personally, I could take or leave, but there's no accounting for taste.) The realistic approach to Batman will always be a temptation, for the simple reason that he's the least fantastical high-profile superhero. Something undeniably special happens when you set him, with his faux-supernatural iconography, in a world without anything else otherworldly in it. He takes on a slightly shamanic quality, evoking superstition and mysticism. If there is actual magic in the world, or science so advanced that it can make inhuman beings like Ivy or Mr. Feeze, that somewhat dilutes Batman's power. But obviously, that's a small part of the potential of the character. The grim and gritty realism still works, but I can't help but feel this new version of the Batman only limited itself with it. Just the presence of a fictional illicit drug, with its own hokey iconography, just proves that this world could just as easily include more weird science, and perhaps a little less convoluted political background noise. That stuff is good, but the elaboration of it doesn't make it better.

I don’t think I would have liked either Joss Whedon’s or Darren Aronofsky’s Batman, but the Wachowskis Batman sounded like one I could get behind, Joss Whedon’s sounded like a weird mix of dark and new, Darren Aronofsky’s sounded way too dark and it also feels like it fell ten miles from the bat cave
@rottensquid2 жыл бұрын
I've been disappointed by the Wachowskis again and again. I want so badly for them to recapture and build on the magic they created with the first Matrix, but I haven't seen that magic since, except maybe with Sense 8. I'd be interested to see what they'd do with Batman, but I feel like they'd make too many weird choices. The Wachowskis swing for the fences, which is admirable, but all too often, their work ends up an impressively ambitious failure.

We're better off without darren aronofsky's batman not being made. Bear in mind, batman is a mainstream character in pop culture. If the movie did get made, it would've been dark, violent, and be R rated which means kids (6-12) and young people wouldn't be able to go the cinema to watch it and the studio have a hard time selling the movie with marketing, merchandising, and toys.

it takes very little from year one whereas the Batman takes a shit ton from it
@michaelangelo21922 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainEnglehorn lol Batman Begins uses so many images from Batman Year One... They also show the origin story in the same way, there is a large focus on commissioner Gordan's beginning as a policeman, Bruce Wayne acts as a playboy to avoid being detected as Batman... I could go on. "The Batman" doesn't show the origin, nor does it incorporate the Bruce Wayne 'playboy' depiction I just mentioned. I assume if you've read it, you probably did a while ago because it has a TON more in common with Batman Begins than The Batman... The only way The Batman is more similar to Year One is the way they depict Catwoman so maybe that is what you're referring to?
@CaptainEnglehorn2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelangelo2192 I own Batman Year One, first having read it in 2020, most recently reading it last Tuesday right before I saw the Batman a second time, and I stand by my comments. The only things in common imo between Year One and Batman Begins where that it was his first year as batman, falcone was a character in the movie, the joker playing card ending, and the playboy depection you mentioned. that's it. also gordon was not beginning as a policeman in either batman begins, the batman, or the actual comic book. Year one showed him transferring from the Chicago PD to Gotham, and he had spent many years in Chicago as a cop prior to said transfer. In Batman Begins, Gordon is shown as being the cop that comforted young Bruce following his parents death. and no it doesnt show the origin in the same way. at al (unless we are using different defintions of the word origins?) Imo the atmosphere of the batman in terms of tone was much closer than batman begins to year one, falcone is central to the plot not a throwaway character, and yes catwoman came straight from the pages of Year One. And I'm sorry but I am sick and tired of people accusing others who disagree with their opinion as "you must have never read the book" or "never seen the movie" it is very possible for two people to read the same book and come away with two very different interpretations of the story.
@michaelangelo21922 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainEnglehorn I didn't say you didn't read it? I just said maybe you haven't read it in a while (which you have and that was quite surprising to me). By Jim being a "new" cop in Batman Begins, I meant that Gordan wasn't commisioner yet, whereas in "The Batman", he seems extremely high-up (more so than in Year One and Begins). Even with what you mentioned - it seems like you have all the right evidence to say it aligns with Begins, but you came came to the opposite conclusion. Also there are so many images taken straight from Year One in Batman Begins (even excluding the joker card which you mentioned and I actually forgot for a second). I wish I could attach them here but you can't do that in yt comments. I think you are going to find you are very, very alone in this opinion (from a lot of conversations I've had/online reactions I've seen). If anything, "The Batman" has most in common with Earth One rather than Year One. And even reducing it to its simplist form, Batman Year One showcases the same Batman origin story (cinema parents-shooting, discovedy of bat cave etc. etc.) The story structure, the way it ends, the 3 act structure are all so much more in-line with Begins than The Batman - which is structured completely different and doesn't even show show origin (which takes up a large part of the graphic novel). I didn't mean to offend you though. My comment about you not having read it in a while was genuine because I know how easy it is for one to forget things if not recently seen/read. You have clearly read it recently from the details you remember.
@CaptainEnglehorn2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelangelo2192 sorry, but the majority of times I’ve been accused of not reading a book, it was for not for any genuine reason. I once got told by five different Red Hood fans on a message board that I didn’t read all 50 plus issues of Batman and robin eternal and was repeatedly called a liar because I said I felt Jason Todd and Barbara had no romantic chemistry (it showed them being romantic but that doesn’t mean the chemistry was there) hence why comments even alluding to not having read the material set me off. I’m not going to comment on something I haven’t read or seen beforehand. Also year ones probably my favorite graphic novel of all time (with hush a close second) so being questioned on if I read it also set me off. Now, if you are talking about direct scene lifts, then Batman Begins has more in common with Year one than the Batman does, though said scenes are minimal. However, if we are talking tone, atmosphere, the way characters act (minus Bruce’s playboy schtick) The Batman is much closer to Year One imo. And that’s all this is my opinion
