Since the beginnings of the Caped Crusader more than eighty years ago in DC's Detective Comics, Batman has been reinterpreted time and time again in distinctly different ways for television and the big screen. However, despite all of that, Matt Reeves is the first filmmaker to lean full tilt into the character's noir, detective fiction roots bringing us arguably the most comic accurate version of the Batman we've seen on screen thus far. You see, The Batman (and Robert Pattinson) isn't just another Batman movie, it's a hard-boiled, moody, angsty, film noir that's more than just an exceptional comic book movie or the best Batman movie (it's a PERFECT Batman movie), but is one of the best film noirs of the past 20 some years. Robert Pattinson emerges as the best on screen Batman we've ever gotten and who's Bruce Wayne is a traumatized shell of a man addicted to the release he gets from becoming The Bat. Loved the movie. It blew me away. Not perfect by any means but it's the first time it felt like the real Gotham and the real spirit of Batman were captured almost perfectly

I think it was heavy on mood and atmosphere and for many, this is what makes it good. For me, nailing down the milieu is not enough, it has to tell a story that's not too predictable. It was predictable for me, having seen Seven many times and it borrows from that. Perhaps Fincher may have done better with the material. Familiar with Reeves' work; he is good with a pared-down story like his old movies -- Let me in, Let the Right one in -- but for The Batman, the movie doesn't have scale or heft or even expanse, considering he's doing more than just a little neighborhood as milieu.

The moment Batman becomes a hero is so beautifully clear. The entire film, he is the shadows. But when he realises he can actually help people and inspire people he leaves the shadows behind. He lights up a flare that destroys the shadows making him the light.

My favorite part of that scene is that he instantly jumps into action with selfless abandon. Then as he jumps down you can see the small cadre of officers standing wide eyed at seeing someone practically jump to his death in order to save the dark figures below. None of them knows if any of them are important people but someone trying so hard to save random is such a foreign concept in this world of Gotham that Reeves has developed sparks as much hope in those officers who want to be good as it does the people who came to that rally with the hope that Gotham can be better.

HE wants them to think twice before robbing. i loved the horror esc music for batman because that's exactly what it is for crooks. a horror movie

Ah, interesting take! I saw that scene as Bruce already for sure heading back to Gotham, but he just wanted to be with, near, or even simply looking at Selina for every last second he could possibly get with her, because she brought him that intimate comfort he'd been missing for so long. It felt like a very wistful, humanizing note to end on for this Bruce, considering how distant he is. Either way, VERY unique final shot for a Batman movie!! It could've so easily been just him standing over the city and gliding away. I'm glad they did something so different and so human, just like the movie as a whole.

I like how the movie shows how being a vigilante isn’t cool and exciting. It’s an exhausting, lonely and sad lifestyle. Bruce has become so consumed by his alter ego. He doesn’t even know how to be Bruce Wayne anymore. He’s more comfortable in the bat suit. Than he is in his own skin. It’s a fascinating take on the character that not everyone is gonna accept. But at least the director had the guts to try something a little different with this Batman.

From the moment he lights the flare and leads the people out of the dark waters to safety, the rest was absolutely beautiful. The Nirvana reprise, Batman narrating about the city underwater, the national guard, martial law, and how the criminal element never rests, was some deep stuff. I was literally "in awe" and 500% invested. I hope they keep the Joker very minimal in the sequel and it seems like it's leading towards a Court/City of Owls and No Man's Land/Arkham City type story. Which is amazing.

I personally believe the “I am vengeance” theme is a foreshadowing of the future trilogy. The second film will explore “I am the night”, and the third film will bring the franchise to a full circle by establishing “I am Batman”

I love how he shifts his purpose from being vengeance to being a symbol of hope. When one of riddler’s followers calls himself “vengeance” just like Batman, it makes him realize his inspiration to others hasn’t been a 100% good thing. When riddler expects Batman to go along with his plan after explaining it in Arkham Asylum, or how Selina expects Batman to help her take down Falcony, they are seeing Batman as nothing more than vengeance. By the end of the film he has become a sign of hope in Gotham more than a sign of vengeance, especially seen when he helps those trapped by the flood with his flare lighting the way as a beacon of better things to come.

People are actually missing the plot of the film and seeing that big picture. Every critic has just nit picked and compared it to Nolan’s trilogy which is a different take on the character. They critic this because it’s not the superhero cliche film they’re used to but if it was they’d hate that too.

@@lethalassassin1754 Nolan’s isnt that either, but I think you are correct; they aren’t ready for superhero movies to be anything but either campy or super intense and complex; this story isnt complex in my opinion unlike Dark Knight which leaves a lot open to interpretation. Batman in this has an obvious development in character whilst also being the obvious winner (for now), but nobody can comprehend superhero movies being good as noir detective films.

The Batman delivers the gritty noir style crime thriller I've always wanted to see in a Batman movie. It's a true detective story that explores the corruption of Gotham in much deeper way than we've ever seen on the big which extremely impressive following Nolan's trilogy. Of course all the performances are top notch and Robert Pattinson KILLED it as Batman! I think he succeeded in silencing many of the ignorant idiots and naysayers that were bringing up Twilight who clearly hadn't seen any of his work outside of that franchise.

This version of Batman isn't interested in putting on the billionaire playboy persona yet. His only focus is being Batman. That's why even in the funeral scene he doesn't say much and barely responds to anyone because he's a man on a mission. But it'll be cool to see him evolve into a more traditional Batman that manages the public image of Bruce Wayne.

very true. this movie doesnt explore batman origin because everyone pretty much knows it all already. instead, it explores his first few years as batman, probably coming back from his training with ras al ghul (which is equivalent to the training in vengence). In his first few years he is still fighting crime for the sake of fighting crime with only a simple morality of no-killing. Bruce wayne isn’t here yet, thats why he doesn’t appear in the movie, there is no playboy philanthropist persona because he hasn’t realized it yet. This is also the reason why the character development is this movie is actually quite faithful to batman origin.

Battinson and Gordon’s on screen chemistry honestly stole the show. I think R. Pats really knows how to bounce off his scene partners, in my opinion. He’s a great actor, himself, and he seemingly knows how to make it so that his energy doesn’t occlude that of the person who he’s sharing the screen with, but rather elevates both people’s energy levels. He just is good at portraying chemistry.

There's two scenes in The Batman that really got me emotional. The part where Bruce tells Alfred that he scared to lose him. That he thought he mastered his fear, but the thought of losing Alfred makes him genuinely afraid got me in the heart man. Then there's the scene where we see how Bruce is really a good person because he tells Selina she doesn't have to pay with her father by killing him. The fact that he has a strong moral compass, and he knows that an eye for an eye is a vicious cycle that doesn't bring the victim peace says so much about Bruce. He's a good man deep down he just needs to grow.

Yessss the hospital scene was a great heart-to-heart, top to bottom. I also loved seeing the "no guns, no killing" Batman rear his head when Selina said they need to kill Falcone. I think he basically a line that the animated Jason O'mara Batman has said. "That makes you like them," to Damian Wayne. He also said "You can't fight crime by becoming a criminal" which is great. Not to mention the Red Hood dilemma! "If I let myself go down that road...I'll never come back." "You don't have to pay with him" is now one of my favorite lines among that collection of Batman anti-kill quotes. So well put. Revenge doesn't make anything better, it just stoops you down to their level so you become the thing you hate, it doubles all those horrible feelings instead of curing them, and possibly even causes others to want to get revenge on you back so the cycle never ends. Battinson is just the best live action Batman, man. I love him so much. He feels like the comics and cartoons and games brought to life.

My great grandfather passed away last month and I'll always remember him grabbing my hand tight in the bed as I sat next to him... I'll never forget that, and that's all I could think of in that scene, legit got emotional. Andy Serkis was incredible in this movie and he really brought the best out of Pattinson in every scene.

I like the fact that it wasn't "I have one rule" shit when it came to stopping Selena from killing Falcone or the corrupt cop. He wanted to save her soul (essentially), because in this "universe" what she would have done may be a positive (removing the corrupt elements that perpetuate the corruption) for Gotham but not for her. There's an emotional reason why Batman stopped her. Which is good, because Nolan's "I don't kill" is bullshit in his own films. Batman doesn't MURDER, he manslaughters a bunch. He manslaughtered the shit out of the league of shadows members before they did anything bad. I find the deployment of the not killing creed in 'The Batman' to be much more effective than Nolan's version because of this. It's not cut and dry, it's nuanced. EDIT: Also that scene with Alfred is the scene that shows Batman needs to use the 'mask' to protect those he loves, and he didn't realise it till that scene. It's good, it explains why he doesn't do playboy bullshit (which is dumb cause theres only 2 billionaire playboys that exist so how is that a cover?).

I love how he didn’t say directly, “I’m afraid of losing you.” Instead, he says he hasn’t mastered the fear of losing those he cares about and takes Alfred’s hand. Bruce cares deeply but he is a man of action. He’s socially inept as the millionaire Bruce Wayne and even to those he is closest to as seen by some of the tense scenes with Alfred. Even with Selina and Gordon, he states subtle nods to his feelings like when he and Selina say goodbye he says, “Take care of yourself.” With Gordon, he tells him he’s a good cop. These carry so much subtext and weight given who this Batman is. It’s lovely. He’s an orphan, isolated, angry, sad. He’s still that little boy in the alley, born in the shadows, only now learning that shadows only exist because of the light.

One of my favorite scenes in this movie was Batman's escape from the Police station. When he gets to the rooftop and is about to leap that momentary look of fear in his eyes right before he gathers his balls & leaps was a genius decision. It showed how alot of what was going on was new to this Batman and how at the end of the day he's just a man. The word that kept coming to my mind the entire time watching this movie was MASTERPIECE. The Riddler was a terrible villain, the last sequence in the movie completely 180'd his motives and made no sense. Also the whole Falcone plot was just lame. This movie was insanely overhyped and overrated like the new spiderman. Not even close to a masterpiece

When Batman acknowledged that he needed to do more after realizing he was the inspiration to Riddler's vengeance, it kind of hit my soul deeply. Because I never really thought that anybody could portray an idea that a violent vigilante, dressed in an all black bat suit, could potentially inspire some sick and twisted minds. And when he admits that maybe he isn't doing enough to distinguish himself and /or make it obvious that he's an honorable, honest guy trying to help, I really thought, "Wow, he is really unable to control who or what he is inspiring." I can't wait to see who the villain is in the next film and how he is handled. Riddler's character development was epic!

Many of the darker Batman stories show that Batman creates all his villains, some even being close friends with him before they turn to crime, like Two Face or Clay Face in some iterations. And because Batman knows this, he feels a heavier burden to make sure they are taken care of, not just killed, even though he fails constantly and putting them in Arkham is never a permanent solution. The Dark Knight touches on this a little bit, but doesn't go as deep as this series will go, I think. In TDK, the joker says "You complete me" and lets Batman know that "To them, you're just a freak like me" which is done in a more complex manner in The Batman, when Riddler believes that Batman and him were "working together as a team." It may also be implied that The Joker was possibly created by Batman in the new series due to the deleted scene that was posted on youtube.

I don't want to shut you down because I agree with you but if you want to see this idea explored elsewhere, the Daredevil TV show touched upon this. It was during season 2 which has decidedly the worst season of the show, but Daredevil's crusade is implied to inspired that of the Punisher.

I think the reason filmmakers haven't leaned on the detective angle is because good mysteries and detective films are extremely hard to pull off well, look at Se7en no one apart from Fincher could've pulled it off so well. Just my opinion...I don't wanna say Nolan or Snyder or Burton are bad filmmakers, they just played to their strengths (philosophical dilemmas, epic action and dark atmosphere respectively) Reeves did the impossible, he made Batman not just cool again but also frightening...

The ending of the movie is easily my most favorite scene in the entire film. Batman escorting the citizens out of the water, and carrying a girl to safety. And his whole line about giving hope to the city instead of just being a vengeful vigilante. That, to me, was peak Batman.

I felt weird coming out of the theater and thinking to myself that my absolute favorite Batman movie couldn't be the most recent. That place surely has to belong to an established classic like The Dark Knight, right? I shouldn't make such a bold statement even to myself, and was just riding the rush of having just experienced it, and it would eventually fall to its real spot without my own personal ranking. But as the days went by and I found myself still thinking about it, still wanting to go watch it again, still remembering details and finding in them new ways in which it was such a masterpiece, I'm starting to realize this might actually be, indeed, my favorite Batman film.

Right?? I can't really think of any scene that could be completely cut (other than Riddler and Joker in the asylum). Any pacing problems were simply scenes that were a bit indulgent or dragging their feet. Other than that, every scene did have a purpose. In my eyes, the Nolan trilogy was always kinda like "the best we had" in terms of a grounded realistic live Batman, but now that we have Reeves' Batman, dare I say it I can barely imagine going back. This might possibly completely blow The Dark Knight out of the water for me. It feels *so much more* Batman-y to me. TDK feels so...sterile now. Batman Begins was always my favorite Nolan Batman film because it was a grimier, emotionally driven story for Bruce, and "The Batman" was exactly that. This is what Batman's been missing for so long. Though I will say, Bale's playboy Wayne facade was always a treat, and that seems to be the only major issue people have with Pattinson's Bruce, that he was so mopey and antisocial, but I loved that. He is younger after all. I wonder where this Bruce will go? Robert going to the levels of Bale's playboy would be so funny to see, but I think he'll most likely do quiet philanthropy after Gotham's flood, which may put his secret identity back in jeopardy.

Where, Nolan’s trilogy was the Batman films for general audiences.. with the typical marvel movie formula… villain causes havoc in Gotham, batman fights villain.. rinse, wash and repeat. THIS Batman is FOR Batman fans.. not the general audience… Gotham itself is the best portrayal of the city BY FAR and Pattinson played the character with such rawness and emotion it’s the most comic faithful batman thus far. While I buy and large agree with what you're saying, I wouldn't necessarily call Nolan's trilogy a "marvel formula" set of films. They're incredible unique and game changing. I would say It more so has to do with the fact that The Batman leans heavily into detective fiction and noir and is overall a "slower" paced film that may not be for everyone. That being said, yeah...this is the Batman from the comics through and through!

I love Ben Affleck as Batman but I'm just going to go be honest. Don't think his Batman movie would have been as good as this. His movie from the leaks focused on Deathstroke and full on heavy action. While that's great, it's the same Batman as always. We've never seen Batman actually be a detective properly in a previous movie before. I'm glad his movie didn't happen because we wouldn't have gotten this ambitious detective noir thriller, entirely focusing on Batman being a detective.

I adored it. It felt so refreshing to see a superhero movie that actually felt like a standalone film and not an episode of an extremely expensive Disney show. I love the MCU, but it’s getting bland. I love what they did with Batman‘s character, having him figure out in this movie that to be a symbol for Gotham, he can’t just be a vigilante brutally beating people, but a hero, people need. I think his trilogy has the potential to be the best Batman trilogy, and may be one of the best superhero trilogies ever. I’m very excited to see where the future goes for Robert Pattinson‘s take on the character, and I can’t wait to see the villains and other characters in the sequel. I thought that directorial style by Matt Reeves was just phenomenal. Incredible Director. Makes me want to go rewatch his planet of the apes trilogy. And Colin Farrell contacted great as the penguin. I’m sure his show on HBO Max will be great, and fill in some gaps so that the Batman two won’t need to. Batman has some of the most interesting supporting characters ever, so it makes sense making that aren’t solely based around him. I think in the next few movies we’re probably going to see Batman, and Bruce of all to become more Accustomes to the public eye. The Batman was great 9.5/10, sequel gonna bang 🔥

Getting a serious character study film rooted in genre honestly kind of made Nolan's films feel like toys of the real thing... which is this. I love comparing things. Nolan's films are great... 2/3 at least. But those films were impactful ideological thought pieces sold by great acting performances, the setting and characters really didn't get the attention the ideas did. Not to mention, Nolan's films were very motivated by structure and iconography, whereas this movie is driven by pure cinematic prowess, editing, pacing, lighting, framing, blocking, visual metaphors, thematic coding, everything you can think to list. It's a perfect 10/10 movie. It bulldozed every other super hero thing I've ever been impressed by. I think the only thing remotely as cool was Netflix's Daredevil.

I like how Bruce *wasn't* the World's Greatest Detective in this movie yet because he's still a little green, ultimately Gordon and Bruce are both incorrect a lot and kind of lose against the Riddler overall though they stop him from accomplishing some of his goals. After rewatching The Dark Knight today, The Batman is my favorite live action batman movie and Robert Pattinson is my favorite Batman. TDK will always hold a very special place in my heart like all other batman movies, yes event the George Clooney one but this is The Batman for me. There's just something about it that really remind me of reading the comics and watching the animated series growing up, it felt like I was reliving how I fell in love with Batman in the first place. Hell after seeing the movie i sat down and rewatched year one and a bunch of other animated batman movies and this film just captured everything I love about this character. Not only was he violent enough but also the way he looks at the boy at the beginning of the movie, it tells you everything you need to know about Batman as a character in less than 15 minutes. He understands pain, and will stop at nothing to make gotham a better place. It's a beautiful movie, well acted, great score, and the set design mixed with well done practical effects has me itching for more.

I can't add much since my knowledge of batman is really limited, but I just want to say that the scene between Bruce and Alfred in the hospital never fails to make me cry. I saw the movie 10 times, and each time I felt tears streaming down my face when Bruce was talking about fear etc to Alfred. The Batman's Bruce is just a broken man bottling his emotions up and devoting himself to try and save the city that took his parents away, only to be 'baptised' and born again (symbolised by the scene where he leads the people to safety at the end).

This film was damn near perfect. Every scene advanced the plot. No wasted motion. I do have a few little gripes but with some things they are entirely miniscule compared to how much I loved this film. Shit, I could watch it with the sound off and still have a good time. The cinematography is just beautiful. Rob absolutely crushed it as Batman. Dano deciding to go full Zodiac was a bold, risky move that ended up working out in spades. Zoe is gorgeous and has fantastic chemistry with Rob. If this isn't the best Batman film ever made then it's at the very least tied for first

I had some reservations about Robert Pattinson of playing Batman, but I've never been happier that I was wrong. That beautiful man made a home run and won my heart. Batman is my fauvorite hero and constant inspiration so when the perfect Batman movie comes I am overjoyed. The first scene where we see the Batmobile is AMAZING! I laughed a nervous laughter because my body could not handle how cool and menacing it was.

I wish the DC verse had leaned into this mood from the beginning tbh. Yes I really loved James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, which is the polar opposite of this film, but I also appreciate this film for being the other side of the coin of Marvel's redefinition of comic book film (brightly-lit, pop culture references, fan-service appearances, cool one-liners, after-credits scenes... I'm also a fan btw) if they had been doing that from the beginning of their revival, they would have had something so strong going in the face of the MCU's goliath.

The detail and care put into this film is exceptional. Despite the three hour run time I really couldn’t find a scene they could cut out or one that felt like an extra because every moment had me wanting more. They really chose the right moments that added nicely to Batman as a character. I love how he has a real and fresh character arc in this one. Also, I like how Pattinson acts with his eyes. It’s amazing what he can convey with very little lines. Everyone in the cast had great to amazing performances.

Not just the fact that the opening monologue was wonderful, but the actual events in the beginning reminded me so much of Batman the Animated Series. The way he came out of shadows, the way they were scared to even look down a dark hallway, not to mention the music when he confronts the gang. Absolutely epic!

But in real life it’s like that. When so many of the elite class are so irredeemably corrupt, the laypeople cannot tell the difference between just another money laundering scheme from the very beginning, and a real effort by a genuine person who happens to be rich, only it didn’t pan out as he intended. One of the many, many little touches that make for realism in this movie.

Yeah I'm gonna say it. I like this film more than the dark knight. Not to say the dark knight is bad, it's still an incredible movie but the tone and style of these movies are pretty different and my taste in movies has changed a lot from when I watched the dark knight as a kid. Overall still both incredible movies but I like The Batman a bit more and I'm very excited for more of Patterson's batman. I also hope this isn't the end for the riddler, I doubt he'll come back as a main antagonist again but he was easily my favourite part of the movie. (As someone who doesn't read the comics) the riddler always seemed a bit goofy to me but this movie certainly changed my view on that, he was genuinely kinda terrifying.

The thing that especially stuck in my head after watching was how commanding the theme is throughout the movie a providing those quiet somber moments and the rage filled octane moments are instantly recognizable within the song and especially in the end where hope is reignited the theme itself again reflects it. I dunno maybe it's completely obvious but I've never had a theme in a superhero movie be so constantly aware in my mind

One also has to understand that like all kids who grew up in wealth, bruce is ignorant of systematic issues and stemming from inequality, wealth and corruption and power at the top. Cuz well he is in that circle so he sees bottom feeders as the issue and is living in the dark. The riddler also brings him into the light

TDK trilogy is still my fav, but Reeves has done something so incredible we don’t even know how good this can get! It is great that this movie exists. I am among those who didn't like Nolan's bland films, at all - so this is the first time to be truly impressed by a Batman film since 1992 (and I was fully aware of Burton one's campiness even at the time). I am beyond grateful to Reeves for giving what some of us think is the more adequate, noir proper, not overacted, infinitely more artistic and mesmerisingly atmospheric version of this character. 10/10

I appreciated a lot of the little things they put into the film. What drew me in immediately was how they acknowledge the Bat Signal being more than just a way to alert Batman, it was a weapon to make criminals run in fear because the Bat may be after them. Another thing was the sound design, i didn’t notice it till someone pointed it out to me but every time Batman walked they made his footsteps loud and heavy, it really made Batman feel like he had a menacing presence without even saying a word

I’ve regained on about every video on KZbin reviewing the film about my lifetime of loving the other films, cartoons, and comics, especially the Micheal Keaton films, but this movie is different. I LOVED the movie. But I HATED the fact that they pretty much had all the major points throughout every part of the movie in the trailers. So although the story was a surprise, the shots weren’t cause I had pretty much seen them all.

That’s literally why I stayed away from trailers, tv spots, images etc. you can’t go into a movie having being spoiled by trailers and whatnot and *not* be underwhelmed/disappointed. The movie itself was very good, but unfortunately I had some issues with it so it stopped it from being perfect for me, TDK is still the best Batman movie imo but The Batman is a close second.
