Hi John, I've been practising this idea on acoustic by using a looper and creating an A to D chord progression, then soloing over the top. I find it difficult to work out when the chord changes. Any tips? How can you train your ear to recognise a D chord from an A chord?

Hey Sean, try this - make sure you're chord changes in the loop are in time to a 4 count. So A for 4 beats then D for 4 beats. Then try soloing over A, count along and end your lick on beat one of the D chord. So it will be a short solo :) Just a phrase really, but do this several times to begin feeling when the chord changes. Stopping on the chord change will be a bit of a marker for that. Get some reps in with this. Then just expand this idea. Level two would be to play for the entire A and D and land on the next A, beat 1.Hope that helps!
