That finders list is awesome. I made the same mistakes. Got frustrated. But after I sat down and read the manual, bingo ! Made a test garden out of toasted coins off of ebay. Went to the pawn shop got a cheap gold ring and buried the items with nails and pull tabs. That really helped. Thank you for posting this! Philip- Ohio

Thanks for the feedback on the list and thanks for downloading it. It's a great idea to make yourself a test garden. It helps, for sure. Continue practicing in your yard, find relatives or friends who will let you go in their yard, etc. Some of them may get hooked too, haha! Drop in the comments which detector you are using, I'd like to know. Thanks for watching!

Great video, wise advice. I just bought a brand new Xterra Pro and got sick before I could even get out and use it so I've spent the last month and a half watching KZbin videos learning how to use my machine and watching videos like yours trying to absorb as much information as I can just within the last few days I've been able to get out in my yard and find some different things. Once again great video thank you so much for the info
@dcmdetects2 ай бұрын
The Xterra Pro is a solid machine, regardless of what you may hear. With ANY machine it's how much you put into learning it, if you put the hours in you will be rewarded. Using your yard as a learning ground is great, it will start to "click" as you find more things and learn what the machine is telling you. I really appreciate your watching and your comment. Thank you!

Truth all the way through! My first time detecting near my Dad's house, I found a 1919 wheat penny and a three ring minnie ball (bullet circa 1860s) The next visit I found a beautiful condition Matron Head large cent. Third time we dug foil, nails, and barbed wire. Can't wait to see what the fourth visit might hold!

Great tips. I really appreciate all of your support! 😃 I think beginners need to know that even if you're the last person that will ever be there, fill in your holes. If you dig in grass, don't fully detach the plug. It needs to stay connected to the rest of the root system or it will likely die.
@dcmdetects2 ай бұрын
Great points and advice on plugs! Thanks for the great comment! Your shovels are awesome!
@digginggopher2 ай бұрын
The last thing is highly debated, I dig full circular plugs with my shovel, and they do alright, I try not to dig in dry soil though, with my hand digger i dig horse-shoe plugs, not because I'm afraid of it drying out, but because I'm afraid of the mower sucking it up
@dcmdetects2 ай бұрын
@@digginggopher great points!
@TheKeyDateKid2 ай бұрын
@digginggopher it matters where you dig. Some might survive where the soil is very damp. I'd be happy to provide you with specific newspaper articles picturing fully cut dead plugs, being the reason why metal detecting and digging in local parks is prohibited. Keep the root system attached. I know it's more difficult determining if the target is in the hole or plug but with practice you'll get just as fast.

Nice video. I started detecting in 1971 with a Jetco detector, don't remember the model, but it was very basic. I lived in SC from 1998 to 2002 and found some very nice items detecting there. I don't pursue the hobby any more. After living and detecting in Europe finding a coin from 1800s here in the US after finding Roman coins just doesn't have the same thrill. But those of you just starting out, keep it up, there is no telling what your next signal might reveal.
@dcmdetects2 ай бұрын
I have heard others say the same after detecting in Europe, age-wise, what we find here in the US does not compare. Thank you for watching!

I have been at it for 43 years, I seed for the beginners, I keep a pocket full of Zinc pennies I toss out for them to find. So many have a problem with pin pointing so I tell them to use a bigger shovel and dig bigger holes. If you hack coins up, Dig bigger holes. Hunt at night where people don't see you as often. Don't buy cheaper machines, The more you pay the better finds you will make. Find ways to clean your coins, fine wire brushes work great. That park you drive by everyday, No one's detected it in the last 50 years. Remember to leave pennies behind for the next "Treasure Hunter"

Slow down & take your time. Why race by a possible target to get to " better" spot? Ive seen it happen. My buddy with a Minelab equinox 900 took off randomly swinging with no pattern established. His buddy came up behind with a 150.00$ Chinese finder & found an old ax head.
