I was sucked into this 40 years ago. I use to use apple sent when in fact there wasn't an apple tree for miles lol. I hunt the edge of a cedar thicket now so I keep my hunting cloths stored in a tote with cedar shavings. Don't know if it helps but as long as it doesn't harm my hunt it builds my confidence. We have a 3 day velvet hunt coming up this weekend in Tennessee and after that its time to stay out of the woods until the end of Sept. By the way, love your videos Jeff.... Hi Jeff, great information as expected. I try to follow many of the points you have identified but one thing I have done for many years, and I believe has contributed to my success. I wash my clothes regularly in a scent free product but prior to the season I gather up a bunch of leaves from my property, dampen them periodically, store them in a perforated plastic bag and place them in a large plastic tote that I use for storing wood along with all my hunting gear and boots. I remove my clothes from the tote when I dress to go hunting and return my clothes back to the tote when Im done hunting and they remain there until the next hunt. Cant be sure it helps but I continue to do it. Thanks again for all your information.

I love rubbing my camo down with green cedar boughs. The oils from the cedar produce a long lasting smell. This is the last step I take right before heading to my stand. Seems to really help. I still smell cedar on my camo come next hunt. Paying attention to every detail can make you or break you.

I couldn't agree with you more, but I am dead sold on Dead Down Wind. Wash my cloths in it, shower with it, spray my boot with it... and it is the only 'product' I use, has no phony smells, just helps mask my scent. The result are nothing short of great - as a ground hunter over natural elevations I have experienced some awesome things. Watched four does walk 80yds down a trail I had come in on that morning, pass within twenty feet of me as I sat 25 ft. above them on a hillside. When I changed my thinking and focus about scent control - so did the number of deer I saw - great video, keep preachin' Jeff!

Jeff great videos i love all the tips that you have and the wealth of knowledge that you share with us is top shelf. Most of your advice is geared to private property, But not all of us are fortunate to have private land or access to private land. I would like for you to share more information about hunting big public land, where access is limited or you have to bush wack to get into a spot. I understand the whole playing the wind card but sometimes its hard. I have seen myself set up for deer coming from one direction just to have them come in from another. And it is almost impossible to create another trail in without making so much noise and leaving scent. Any extra tips would be welcomed. Keep up the good work, look forward to more vids

I have learned so much from this channel, I'm getting pumped up on this coming season. You're hunting in a different era than your father. There are a lot more big bucks now than there were in his day because of QDM. Also, he probably didn't have the benefit of trail cameras and modern technology.

@@russelllangworthy994 I am not speaking down on my dad at all, though I appreciate you coming to his defense because I could see how this could be interpreted as boastful but first of all, my dad used trail cameras and all of the gadgets money can buy, and qdma isnt something that's very new and it's also not applied everywhere, especially not public land. He was a stubborn man who said "you cant kill them from the couch" and would hunt every day of the season, but the fact of the matter is you can't kill them if you blow out the woods from too much pressure either. I learned alot from him, dont get me wrong. But this channel is a wealth of information and has lead me to seeing more deer more consistently than ever before. Period.

I also think more people are into trophy hunting than in the past? Maybe more education out there like Jeff and others? I grew up "brown its down" with my dad as well, and we ate venison all year. It wouldn't be unusual for us to kill 10 does, and my heart would race just when a doe came out period. Now, like you, I'm more into deer management and not killing anything that walks. We only own 60 acres, and its actually more fun to me now that I'm older. In fact, last year I didn't shoot a single doe, I let them all walk. I also started following Jeff and others advice. Coincidentally, my dad went down to our land on a random weekday and slipped into a spot I'd been talking about wanting to hunt on that "perfect day", and killed a nice 8pt. Biggest deer killed on our land to date. I agree, nothing wrong with how we used to hunt, I think people are just more educated now on wildlife management. I know I certainly am just in the last 2-3 years, and changed the way I hunt for the better.

Try Cedarwood essential oil, it has a very musky earthy cedar smell, and repels ticks and mosquitoes. I was out today with the wrong wind and had 3 breach the tree line right where my scent would have been. I make no claims but could be worth a try, if for nothing else as pest repellant. I got mine from New Directions Aromatics in Canada. If anyone tries it and finds success post back here and let us know!

I hung some stands this weekend. For licking branches I bent tall 2 inch trees across the trail and tied them to another tree. I then hung the licking branches (vines) down over the trails. It’s a weird hoop look, but it’s more natural than the “rope between two trees” I’m hoping-!

There are a few of my stands that can only be hunted with a constant north or northwest breeze. Even if the air is calm, the way the currents swirl along the mountainside is something you would never know. I never understood why on calm days it seemed deer would spook no matter the direction from my stand they were. I put up feather light flags around my stand within eyesight, about 50-70 yards out, and was amazed that even when it seemed calm, it was like a cyclone around my stand. No doubt my scent was spreading way beyond those flags, hence the spooked deer in every direction. Those stands are reserved for days where the wind is constant from a certain direction, usually after a cold front passage, which is all the more better anyway. Just a little inside info for those calm days. Be aware that currents can fool you, but they won’t fool a deer’s nose.

Well I got 40 acres I hunt and I have one stand set in big woods on the only big stand of white oaks dropping about every year already dropping big ones this year my stand is on the lower side and it's blows towards a cow field and there is about 8 trails going through the woods And ton of rubs is there any advice you got for this property

hi Jeff, you are a wealth of knowledge, at 62 I've just learned how to bow hunt correctly, thank you for that. my questions is that I hunt in north Texas where it is 100 today. next week we have 4 days of rain coming in a row at least so far, and temps in the low 90s. am I wasting my rye and clover trying to plant this weekend? thanks again for all your advise. P.S. using your advise I am hunting about 10 acres of a 100 acre property and in pulling my cards last weekend after spraying my third round of Glyphosate. of course i didn't know what I had until after I sprayed. I have two deer that I passed on the last two years and now they are 12 and 16 point 4 year old's coming to one of my plots that all is left is clover eaten to the ground. big thanks to my neighbors not planting anything. they have been coming to eat about an hour after sun up every few days, I guess due to the heat. should I wait until after weather event or try to tag one early due to this pattern? season starts here October 2nd. I use backing soda, peroxide, sent shampoo and a pinch of vinegar in my own contraption. I had a smaller buck ( 3-4 years old ) circle around me and never picked up my sent. I didn't shoot him because his rack was messed up looking lol It was very thick, went up 9-10 inches and had two little tips on top 🤦🏻‍♂️ He was 12 foot away too.

That's exactly what I try to explain to people (JS) that say Scent-Lok doesn't work, is just a fad, etc. Scent-Lok can't work miracles, we have to do our part, as well. I'm fanatical about my scent control, and with Scent-Lok, I routinely have deer downwind.

My gloves and clothes get washed and put in a air tight container, and I spray everytime I go in. And normally my gloves and clothes end up smelling like tinks 69 by the middle of the season. Idk if it’s a good or bad thing. But this year is going to be the first time I even think about that wind. I never focused on it and it’s probably why I’ve had a lot of bad sits. I’ve had a lot of good ones not thinking about wind also. Makes me wonder if the wind was just in my favor and I didn’t no it. Or was I up so high in my climber it was blowing over them

Yes! Get out quickly. Longer you sit there the faster the deer pinpoint you. Preferably have a low terrain like dry creek bed Once out of woods I personally have a upside down 5 gal bucket set up at the top of the L. Your stand is here lower right of the L "_" bucket at top of L "I" most deer will flee in a 45° angle away from where the scent came from. If you get out quickly get to the bucket as quietly as possible sit and wait. Deer that flew the area will be heading your way using terrain to their advantage. Generally the high ground where they can see the most.They will head for the safe zone. That zone that noone enters the one where instinctively the matriarch doe has led her offspring and other deer to countless times to pow wow and reorganize

I mostly hunt Central and South Florida where it's flat and hot. I've gotten pretty good at it. However the last 3 years I have gone to Illinois in early November. I was successful last year by pure luck... I'm still having trouble figuring out the thermals thing. I can't seem to understand how my scent travels when hunting extremely hilly terrain. Is it better to hunt the ridge tops in the morning or the afternoon? Or the creek bottom for that matter... I can't seem to do either without hearing deer blow around me lol

I hunt public land. I saw a good buck cross the road in front of my truck. It came out of a military property that doesn't have food plots. The buck was going to a corn field 430 yards from the road. The problem is the corn field is set up for dove hunting that comes in one week before bow season. I am afraid this buck will turn nocturnal. If It takes roughly an hour to reach the field am I ok to hunt near the road to catch him coming across right before dark or will I have to wait until rut season?

Hi Art...so many factors to consider, but you don't need to hunt the land to know how the deer move on the land. Hunting the outside edges is always a great start tho...

Hang trail cameras 12 feet up on all four corners facing into property. Next find outer space where neighbor bucks would come from Use ONx. Zoom way in. If you dont pay for it it will have several year old data as the image of terrain. Look for natural drainage in fields find a rocked culvert leading to a inlet creek from a field etc place camera in a tree with lithium batteries turn on and face upstream towards field. Fence rows leading out to road one side where land dips down into a low shady grassy area. Remember deer want scent and vision advantage so think like a deer. Stand on perimeter get down to head height of deer 4 .5 feet to 5ft. Look at your property. My best suggestion is get a 2or and strap a camera to it and walk whole perimeter and every 20 to 50 yards turn camera in towards property see what they see. Then any road where your property has either grass-road- field note it and use the military Crest to diagonally get from car to stand. After awhile once you find direction of travel wire snip out some barn wire weave in high branches like a vertical basket weave to force the deer to go where you want them to till up openings in woods and plant switch grass and egyptian wheat also pile branches up to help block their views.

Simple buy and plant switch grass row on left switch grass tow on right and leave middle tilled plant clover all the way up to your edge of cover. Place stand setup 30 yards from where you taught the deer to stage up. Like a giant upside down stop sign. The sign area is small saplings piles of brush and maybe a water hole. Hell surround whole outer shape of stop sign design with metal fence stakes and 30lb test fishing line like barb wire only invisible to deer. So they train themselves to walk up the sign post eating clover gently nudged by fishing line up to a staging area. Then critical last step is to plant 3 apple trees right where sign post meets octagon sign. This way you reward the deer and thank the deer for coming onto your land. Leave stand and setup be for 3 years. Then huntvstand when wind is right. By then all the does will have learned that your property A is safe, B is human free and C it is very yummy. Next about 50 yards from stand build a foot high by 2 foot deep wood box lay on its side and place oil bnb pan full of fly bait. This will indeed kill all of the raccoons and possums that live near your stand. Foolproof deer proof

I've noticed the same. Riding an ATV last year scouting, checking my property I had does walk literally 50 yards in front of me across the trail. Couldn't believe it. They weren't even running. Looked at me as they walked across. During the season I can accidentally step on a stick and I hear them bolting away in the woods. I think they know the difference when the hunting season comes up, due to more people in the woods, maybe less cover from fallen leaves and more open woods, etc. That's my only guess??

Ive done both. I put all minerals on the ground now as the rain will cause them to leach in to the soil. Deer have dug holes trying to get to the mineral that had dissolved. I also just use the big 6 livestock mineral block from tractor supply. Its 50lbs and like 6$ after taxes. Ive witnessed deer licking it from my stand. Its like a maroon colored block. Hunting in the mountains is tough with swirling winds all day long. The thermal early and late are the only way I can effectively control scent directions and only for a short time each day. Who wants to get off stand at 10am. I use ozonics to control those late mornings swirls. And I was very skeptical but it works when used properly. But you can't use it as a crutch is the main thing a bad wind can't be hunted, but wind blows everywhere every day be prepared for it. OLD DOG "Jeff"LEARN A NEW TRICK!!!! OZONICS WORK. But a bad hunter isn't going to see the results you would.

My absolute best success has been the simple old fashion way. I hang my cloth out on the line and let it rain on and let it air dry outside and when I'm not hunting the cloth are out side on line. The scent killer stuff is a money pit. Nothing is better than killing your scent like leaving them out on line. Scent killer has chemicals in it which will not work. When I was still amish we didn't have scent killer. We smelled like the barn. Still shot crazy amount of deer every year including monsters

I believe "cover scents" are worthless. Do we really think a deer can't smell our coffee breath if our clothes smell like cedar or apples or skunk pee? Deer can distinguish every scent at the same time. You cannot cover it up.

I use charcoal deer are used to camp fires especially where I live there are camp fires tarted by kids evey where I even got a couple on my property
