One of the best times I've noticed when bucks move is before and after a weather event. I'm sure feed is the motivation. To get their bellies full before storm and by the time it's over they are hungry again. I've noticed during wind or heavy rains the deer are very spooky and don't move or feed much. Probably because their hearing is impaired by the wind and rain.

Great video…. But I would add cold fronts really get them going… 15-20 degree drop from one morning to the next is what your looking for.
@DeerAssociation
@DeerAssociation 2 жыл бұрын
Hunters strongly believe this, but the scientific evidence shows a weak relationship at best between cold fronts (or temperature in general) and deer movement. That's why it is not included in our 4 factors that have a significant influence.

Great solid information. No BS in this video. I've been deer hunting 55 years, hunting exclusively with bow and arrow for the past 35 years. I can verify what's said here. Deer do move more at night but if you hunt at night you'll end up in jail!!!

NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. After 25 years of hunting mountain deer in Virginia ......11 to 2 pm is deadly for BIG BUCKS. Also I know for a fact that is when you break out the doe in rut lure. They get up and scent check. It's deadly when you've paid your dues going in before light. Stay put. Respect the wind. Throw or place the lure 30 to 40 yards away from your stand. I've had Big Bucks come straight to it. A Big buck will have a heavy step. My best deer. 199 and a sixteenth. Brush Mountain. Montgomery County. Put me in the record books. It's still the record to this day. For a LEGALLY killed monster. 2007. Paying your dues. Blood..sweat and tears. Nothing compares. Road hunters are Virginia's greatest problem. They're not real hunters. When I look at the mount. It is a feeling of great accomplishment. Dawn and Dusk. Yeah they move then. Weather and temperatures due effect them. Big mountain deer in the morning don't even make it up to their primary bed. This is bed they have never been jumped or intruded. How would you like knowing someone was in your bedroom. Uninvited. You intrude on a Big bucks primary bed. And he will abandon it. Best time to kill a Monster Buck. During the rut. 11am to 2 pm. PERIOD.

All depends on how much hunting pressure an area has. I've made 8 hunts. I've only not seen deer on one morning hunt and one evening hunt. I'm up to 49 deer sighted this year so far. Granted, I'm hunting 1200 acres of private property with low pressure.

Great Info. We should all take in to consideration that there are more than 1 species of whitetail deer, that are found in different parts of the country. All deer will not do the same thing at the same time. What goes for someone in South Texas, probably won't go for someone in Wisconsin and so on. We should study things that are relative to our specific regions, hunting types/means/methods etc.

great advice. I have noticed that 8 days after a full moon to about 11 days if cold, the deer will become temporarily diurnal vs nocturnal in their movements. the "full moon" theory in your comments about the 3 minute mark were quite accurate, except that limited opportunity( based on personal observation over a 7 year time span ) cold weather is also a factor for feeding reason movement. possibly for the availability of forage. and as far as pressure, remember, you are in THEIR backyard, not yours. unless you spend enormous amounts of time at your hunting spot, you can't be there to notice things.

Big bucks are not like your average deer they move in mysterious ways. They don't seem to follow science or the norm in most cases in my experiences and I've hunted 45 years. I've watched them belly crawl under fallen trees they could have jumped over, in fact I killed a nice 8 pointer on a really windy day on the ground on the side of a steep ridge. Shot him close enough to touch him with the end of the rifle when he stood u p in front of me. 11 o'clock till 1 is when I personally have taken my biggest bucks. Mountain bucks and farm land bucks move different at times. Don't siloet yourself on the ground, always use the wind, and most big bucks use the high ground in any area. They normally travel 3 quarters down on the side of a ridge above the doe trails and small bucks. Most all the deer I have killed have been within 20 yard or most of the time less and I mainly hunt from the ground. Just my own experience do what works for you and good hunting. Oh 1 last think no disrespect intended deer move more when there is a steep drop in temps no matter what science says. And try to locate where grandpa is bedding
@kentuckywindage222
@kentuckywindage222 2 жыл бұрын
Since you just told the belly crawl I gotta tell this. It was about 20 years ago. I was hunting a farm where pressure was near 0. The buck I was hunting was traveling the fence row above a large creek bottom. I humped in that morning before daylight up the back from a small side creek and into the hay loft of the barn. Every morning the work hand an 68 year old preacher came in to feed and such. Usually 8 to 9 o'clock. I heard the rod iron gate that morning. When he and the tractor got to the barn, he left it running and climbed up. He told me he and the owner watched that old buck go through the large creek and under the bridge you cross to get to the road to the barn. It got on its belly at the edge of the creek to get past the 200 yards opening I had in front of me. He didn't have to stay low the entire time. I came in the opposite way, wind scent I thought everything I needed to do. He came in to the edge of the fence of that field religiously and i watched from afar with binoculars. Still I was stunned. Thinking, is he pulling my leg? He said no and said the owner and he watched it in amazement. You know I predator hunted that property for a few years after. Saw him a couple more times but never heard of anyone taking him. Until one afternoon the wife called coming from her school just down the road. She said there was the biggest buck hit on the bridge, (same creek and bridge, state highway bridge) she had ever seen. I didn't go but the owner of store, next to the bridge told me it looked like a cow and the mass on the rack was huge. Guess that day he went over that bridge instead of under. People hunted the other properties because of seeing this deer but not one got to stick or shoot him. One of many strange things over 40 years hunting.

Good info! Once a buck reaches 3.5 or older it just seems they have wised up that they become much harder to kill and are creatures of habit. It’s really impressive and also quite a feat to harvest a mature whitetail. I have yet to do it but they are teaching me.

Thank you for all the information......(I strictly bow hunt). By keeping records on the few deer I've killed, 9 have been plus or minus 3 days of the new moon, 3 have been between moons or closer to the full moon. I hunt morning and evening equally, and the buck to doe ratio has been 50/50.....??? Understand that I'm not am expert.....more on the beginner side.

A scientist would tell you that what you have there is too small of a sample size to draw reliable conclusions about a relationship between moon phases and when you kill your deer. Several studies with very large sample sizes have failed to find any significant relationship between the moon and 1) deer movement or 2) rut timing. That's why we didn't include the moon among the factors that have a significant, predictable affect on deer movement.

This is folklore, and it is not supported by any science we are aware of. Deer are not grazing herd animals. There's no time when all deer in a given area are bedded down and not moving. Their activity rates peak around dawn and dusk every day, but even during the slowest period (mid-day) some individual deer are moving.

Deer movement peaks are why I sit the first couple hours of a day then move slowly until the afternoon again. I figure by 9 am, Deer are usually heading to bed or already in bed. Unless the signs tell me the rut is really on then I know it's likely the Bucks are moving later sometimes all day.
@davidgrant8994
@davidgrant8994 3 жыл бұрын
I've also learned that the warmer it is during hunting season, the more likely Deer are to bed down earlier or move towards water or thick cover to escape the warmth. Last year I shot a Doe as she was feeding near a swamp around 830 am and that day was supposed to be high 50s to 60s temperature wise. I chose not to sit that day because I guessed that the warmth would get the Deer to bed down.

Stray dogs can make a big difference I own a small tract of property and notice when strays dogs are about so find out if their someone’s pet before you take them out but strays will suffer a horrible death if left alone.

I do remember you mention that weather does not play a factor in deer movement. Does that also hold true to a really windy day?
@DeerAssociation
@DeerAssociation 3 жыл бұрын
The data available actually shows deer (bucks and does) move the same or even a little bit more on days with moderate winds (over 10 mph). This would not include extreme winds, though, like gale force. But you're not likely to go hunting then anyway, lol.

I've always heard bucks will move in rain or overcast conditions, any truth to that?
@DeerAssociation
@DeerAssociation 3 жыл бұрын
Scientists tracking GPS-collared deer have looked to see if various weather factors affected deer movement significantly. They haven't found anything that consistently changes established patterns that we discuss in this video. Wind, rain, warm, cold, none of these changed established deer movement patterns in ways that were significant and consistent enough to use them to reliably predict deer movement. Deer move more around dawn and dusk, and they move most during the peak of the rut. Not much changes this.

@DeerAssociation
@DeerAssociation 3 жыл бұрын
True. And the bucks really move then. It's one of the pieces of evidence that supports the idea that the rut has a huge influence on buck movement rates, not cold fronts of cold temperatures. South Florida doesn't get cold fronts in August, but the bucks are on their feet!

@@DeerAssociation although the rut is prime time the moon phase is a second best way to determine movement. There are so many myths and theories the best for me that I've come to find out is to just put the boots to the ground keep your eyes peeled for sign and food and bedding I've hunted the ruts the moon phases good weather bad weather but if you do not get your butt in the woods and locate these deer and their traveling trails you might as well be happy with shooting immature deer

I seen a couple moving in the evening last week and then I heard another coming right towards me. It was going to come out in the open 10 yards from me. Then it showed it’s face!!! The biggest black bear I’ve ever seen in the woods and the only bear I’ve ever seen in 42 years of hunting. I almost 💩 myself!!

There's never a time that deer aren't "moving". They move every day, all day. It's a matter of where and what for. The one and only place you're not going to see deer is in your house. Get out there and stay out there every minute you can. After 30 years of deer hunting all kinds of forests, fields, mountains, swamps, by far mostly public land, I'm absolutely just as confident and comfortable heading out to the woods at 10 oclock in the morning as I am getting out there before sunrise, it really makes no difference to me.

Use the 3 day rule.... I always hunt a stand for three days straight, from a hour and a half from daylight to a hour after dark. Its always worked hella great And ive killed big bucks close enough on the ground up against a tree like im turkey hunting to shoot them with a slingshot and kill em. Almost every big buck was killed in the middle of the day... thoughts anyone ? AND ALWAYS CARRY A PRIMOS CAN WITH YOU !!!

When you use the term "hunting pressure," does that mean any human activity? I'm of the belief that it does, and by calling it hunting pressure you're being a little misleading. I have a cousin that drives six hours, one way, to come and hunt on my ranch once a year. The first thing he does when he gets there is to get on his ATV and buzz around the place refreshing his memory from last year, and seeing what changes/improvements I've made over the Spring and Summer. Last year was the first time I consolidated video from my game cameras to show how the deer disappeared during his visit, and didn't return during the season. The number of times I have a recording of the sound of his ATV passing by really gets your attention. I'm going to show him that video in four days, on Thanksgiving. Would you concur?

I agree....less traffic would always be better
@DeerAssociation
@DeerAssociation 3 жыл бұрын
No, we are talking specifically about hunting pressure. The studies we are referring to in this video tracked the locations of hunters actively pursuing deer in relation to the locations and movement patterns of deer in the vicinity. None of them tracked vehicle traffic or other human activity besides hunting, so we aren't commenting on those factors in this video. Therefore, we disagree we are misleading anyone by calling it "hunting pressure." That's exactly what was being measured.

I’m surprised they didn’t say a large temperature drop. Because that will definitely put deer on their feet.
@DeerAssociation
@DeerAssociation Ай бұрын
A lot of hunters believe this, but there's no scientific evidence supporting a connection. In GPS-collar tracking studies, deer movement increases as the rut approaches and peaks during the peak of breeding, regardless of temperature, barometer, moon or other factors. That's why weather is not one of the four factors we covered in this video.

Nope. Numerous studies have looked a lot of weather factors in deer movement data. No significant, consistent patterns have emerged that would allow anyone to use weather as a reliable predictor of deer movement. That's why we didn't include it in our list.
