3 Body Problem is a phenomenal book with a compelling and terrifying premise. In this video I explore the book and new Netflix show and consider the existential consequences of the story.

Please don’t be bummed, but I’ve just learned about the series last week and since seeing this video, I’m actually going to go get the books now first and then go for the series after reading them. I’ve got to read the book first.

despite insane amount of criticisms from book readers, as a book readers myself I enjoyed the show and I'm sure Liu Cixin himself find the show likable as well

I loved the books too and was pleasantly surprised by the Netflix series even with all the changes they made. If you loved the first book you’re going to be absolutely blown away by the next two books. Maybe just take one last look at the night sky before picking up the Dark Forest because you’ll never look at it the same way again. Geniet dit! :)

The books were hard to follow: There's literally a scene with Chang, Yang and Dong talking about a dead Ding. Imagine the Netflix show where everyone was named Tom, Tim, Tommy and Thomas.

One thing I don't get (and hardly anybody seems to address) is that the Santi are claimed to be travelling from an _unstable_ system only 4 light years away, yet Alpha Centauri (the only system at that distance) is a quite stable system where the very stable binary stars are orbited at a distance by a red dwarf. What gives? On top of that, at some point during the show, I believe it is stated that there are "millions of systems" in between us, but again: _clearly not_ .

I enjoyed it a lot, I love the idea of the Dark Forest. One mystery from the show that I learned to just accept was the whole thing with the PDA and Wade, long before the Santi are revealed there's this omnipresent agency that just has insane resources and jurisdictions lol.
@SHIFTY225

I thought the same, then I realised, if Red Coast radar dish could receive the San-Ti signal, then so did others on earth, that's how the PDA was formed, even if no one else could decode their signal its a still a extraterrestrial signal, thus proving we are not alone, and leading to the formation of a task force.

There IS another species ruIing. Consider that there were, to 0UR knowledge, no semiconductors, no transistors, no computers, no listening devices, no movie cameras, etc., until many decades later. Woodrow Wilson in his book 'The New Freedom', was published in 1913. How long was he working on it? In 'The New Freedom', note the words, "watchful", "pervasive", etc. Wilson writes: "“Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men's views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the field of commerce and manufacture, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it.” ― Woodrow Wilson, New Freedom"

The part that hit me - it's not in the 1st book - is that once another civilisation is 100s years ahead of us, we can't catch up with them, no matter what. I'm not saying that happens in the books, or it must be true, but this is the main threat.

Imagine if another civilization is 500 years ahead of us, now imagine if they started and are smarter and are 1 million years ahead of us, imagine 100 million or 500 million years ahead of us and are smarter than us on the scale of you or I to a chimpanzee.

It's a good story but I believe a lot of the theories behind it are flawed, especially the Dark Forest theory which is touched on more in season 2. I do appreciate however the uniqueness of the sci fi elements that the story does introduce is refreshing as it has been quite some time since a sci fi film introduced a new concept to the public to chew on.

Dark forest is definitely a pessimistic perspective but to think of anything else seems overly optimistic. I feel like in the future we either get star wars universe level cooperation between habitable systems/planets or we get dark forest. I struggle to imagine much else inbetween
@The_Zilli
@The_Zilli 3 ай бұрын
@@nathaneden879 why not just a regular forest? Life does not hide. It would be very easy to tell if a planet is occupied and what level development they have as space is pretty quiet and radiowaves, microwaves and everything else that a thriving civiliation would produce would be like a speaker on full tilt in a library. The dark forest also theorizes that resources would be rare which I cant see being the case with civilizations that are able to travese the stars. If there is life out there, which I dont really buy, but if there is, i see it being more like the amazon rainforest than some dark and spooky fairy tale.

@@The_Zilli yeah but life is abundant in an environment that is quite perfectly suited for life. And then you have to think about complex life and what's needed for that. For example a planet that is entirely liquid and has abundant marine life will never have a species with an internal combustion engine

It is science fiction, if it terrifies you, that is about you. If you have read the books in the series, "The Remembrance of Earth's Past" and not just the 3 body problem, what is terrifying? If you watch the Chinese series, "Three Body" and you haven't read the book, you will go through 30 episodes of about 50mins per and have a good idea of what the book is about. However, if you watch the Netflix $20m per episode instead, you will have little idea of the book and the intention of its author. It is not dissimilar to the film version of the book Children of Men, except that arguably that film was better than the book.

H.P Lovecraft pioneered the concepts of Cosmic Horror over 100 years prior and even to this day his stories influence our thoughts on our own position in the universe. Cixin Lou made so many hits in this book series. the facts about what would really happen if we made contact with gods.

There is pretty much not a single realistic idea in the book. The dark forest is pretty stupid idea in our world where spamming is an effective strategy. Same goes with the dimensions, which author takes as a real existing thing and not a math concept of a measurement. Books are not bad, but largely overrated as a sci-fi, where it’s actually just a fiction.
@The_Zilli
@The_Zilli 3 ай бұрын
while i agree that the Dark Forest theory isnt plausible it is a real theory put forth about why we haven't heard from anyone out in the cosmos. I have a very different theory about that entirely but it's not a stupid theory. Nor is the 3 planety body problem that is touched on in the first season. As for dimensions, im in agreement with you, those have never been proven and last i heard if im not mistaken, actually been disproven, or at least the multiuniverse theory.

It's science fiction. Whilst it is based in real scientific ideas and accroted theory, it does go further and use things like string theory, but also does make does stuff up, because ... It's fiction. For example, you can't use the sun to amplify a radio signal. But it is based on some real physics, but not actually possible in reality.
