3 Body Problem Netflix (Episode 1) Review + Book Comparison.

Three Body Problem just released on Netflix. I've just finished Episode 1.
How does it work as an adaptation of the book? well let’s get into this.
I have plenty of criticism here because there is too little characterisation, events are too rushed and there's no suspense for significant events. It's impossible for me to experience this TV series without making comparisons and whilst the TV series hasn't finished yet - and some good angles will come out of it - Episode 1 left me feeling like it was rushed overall. Perhaps, things will improve and it remains to be seen how the rest of the season turns out.

Even as a standalone series the Netflix version is sub par, not good. Tencent version kept the vibe of the book and enriched it by adding more character development.

From the reviews I've read of the Netflix vs. the Tencent versions, the only thing that I am impressed by the is incredible amount of money spent at Netflix for a result that even the original Startrek would have cancelled. It's an insult that the story is sacrificed for on-air time and ratings.

it was really poor. Remember the embaressing opening lines from "auggie" (YeAH, i'M a rEsEARCher iN NAnoTechnOloGY)? From the first original scene without copying the book it was awful. An incredible feat.

Yes, so far I prefer the one with characterisation, suspense and thoughtfulness. There is an argument to be made that the omission of the Yang WeiNing relationship "betrays the soul" of the book - clearly trying to give Ye Wenjie more justification to do what she did. Both omit things. Atleast, The Tencent version had characterisation, suspense and required one to think for oneself. It's interesting to note that you have nothing good to say about the Netflix version. A commenter on my channel hit the nail on the head about the Netflix "re-writes" - "We've called it the 3 body problem so that you know what you are watching is the 3 body problem". There seems to be too much disparity between the book and the Netflix version to even be called "Three Body problem".
