The Mongol word for warrior is, "Daichin ᠳᠠᠶᠢᠴᠢᠨ" in which the Jurchens of the early medieval period borrowed their lexicon to name their Jin dynasty, and once again in a reiteration for the Qing one: 2.0 Манжууд = 大清 Dài Qīng gurun ᡩᠠᡳᠴᡳᠩ ᡤᡠᡵᡠᠨ (дайчин ᠳᠠᠶᠢᠴᠢᠨ) 1644-1912 CE 1.0 Зүрчид ᠵᡠᡧᡝᠨ ᠵᠥᠷᠴᠢᠳ = 大金 Dài Jīn gurun (дайчин ᠳᠠᠶᠢᠴᠢᠨ) 1115-1234 CE Manchus are the latter Jurchens who are the easternmost, part Mongolic-Tungusic folks. So in more ways than one, the Qing dynasty was a fusion/hybridity of Manchu-Mongol polity.

We are in agreement that the "manchus" qing dynasty were not a mere replacement of family at the top. They considered themselves as different. Unfortunately, most people were unaware of subversion at the top due to the fact that so many turncoats co-operated with the new "regime"

From the reviews I've read of the Netflix vs. the Tencent versions, the only thing that I am impressed by the is incredible amount of money spent at Netflix for a result that even the original Startrek would have cancelled. It's an insult that the story is sacrificed for on-air time and ratings.

Unfortunately for Zi Ying, his ruse only kept him alive until after his rival (Qin Er Shi) had died. He reigned for a month before XiangYu at the head of the Chu rebellion took over and according to Kingswar gave him the opportunity to take his own life rather than face humiliation. Playing dumb was probably the only strategy available to him but it didn't work as well as it may have done for Claudius.

Characterisation in the Netflix version was nursery school level eg. Jin and Auggie in the bar saying their job titles. Ye Wenjie's storyline was embaressing - completely missing out the Yang WeiNing storyline in order to give her unimpeded justification to send the message. The tencent version was for people with a longer attention span. The Netflix one went "faster" for people who couldn't think for themselves or wait for tension to build.

Well, The Books used the army of the Qin Dynasty. The Tencent series used the army of the Qin dynasty. Both worked visually and were historically credible. Why did they change it? Dumbing down? Appealing to the lowest common denominator? The Qin dynasty gave the world Shang Yang, legalism, the terracotta warriors. Point me towards the comparative legacy bequethed to the world by the mongols. I'll wait. Also, the video never said there wasn't the phenomena of "military discipline" within the Mongol army, but that no-one has this over-arching impression of them and that no legacy of this was left behind. This made the representation in Netflix's dumbed down version unbelievable.

I agree with you that Mozi certainly deserves more scholarly attention than his work is currently receiving! I also know that Mozi and his thoughts have a huge influence on the Knight-errant tradition. His concepts of universal love and justice inspired many Knight-errant down the centuries in China. Many of them took justice in their own hands to kill the local bullies, right the wrongs done even when they were done by the authority. Many of the rebels took his teachings as their guide as in the case of the Water Margin. Looking forwards to more of your videos!!

I've read the whole series of books and watched the netflix special 4 times already (each time I see more I missed a previous time and appreciate just how subtle it is even more). My first viewing - I was appalled. I couldn't believe how much they changed and how much cursing there was and other questionable flaws (the CGI, etc.). I wasn't impressed, but I wanted to give it another shot, thinking I was biased by my experience of the books and how different the series was. Upon rewatching, I came to truly love the direction they went. I now view it as a vast improvement on many of the unforgivable weaknesses of the books that drove me crazy when reading them - including the absolutely horrendous character work in the first book, the long info-dumps that kill the pacing, the unnecessary world-building that doesn't end up going anywhere. By making the characters all have arcs and all have interesting relationships with each other, they added so much more consistency throughout the series instead of simply "pawns of the plot" as Liu tends to do. The cursing - not my cup of tea, but it did make them relatable and down-to-earth. I also found Ye so much more relatable in the show than the book. I really hated the fact that she pushed the button in the books, but in the show, I had a little more sympathy for her, even though I feel she was obviously mistaken for doing so. The relationship with Jin and Will actually knowing each other as kids is awesome, and honestly, so much more believable than the relationship in Death's end which starts in College. The music is emotive and beautiful. The acting is quite good. It's way funnier than the books. Episode 5 graphics were awesome. The Joke in Ep 7 is very well-done. They did an enormous amount really well. It was so much clearer to me why Luo Ji (Saul) became a wallfacer in the show than it was in the book. This wasn't clear to me until the climax of Dark Forest. Also, the name Saul is awesome and totally appropriate if you know his arc (hint: think the bible). If you've read the books, you know where things are going, and I think they did an amazing job and I really hope we get to see the series completed. The critiques you give of the show could equally be given for the books. Just one example - "They don't have skin in the game" And Wang did in Book 1? Definitely not! Da Shi is the only good character in book 1, and he is given much more motivation by working under Wade. Here at least, the show improves on the weaknesses in the book pretty dramatically. Likewise - "Show Don't Tell" is about emotion, not job positions. The TV show does a ton of showing not telling that I honestly didn't even notice the first time I watched it. Yes, there are plot holes opened by the story that aren't in the book (sophons are more powerful in the TV series and that creates some serious plot holes)... but there are just as many plot holes in the book (faster than light communication via entanglement already violates the no-communication theorem and you can't amplify a radio signal by pointing it at the sun). If you don't like it, that's fine, and this is your platform, and you are free to speak your mind of course. But I don't think it's nearly as bad as people are making it out to be, and I actually think it is extremely good.

I agree with all of your sentiments here. The book’s ideas are so ambitious but they are not perfect with its lack of attention to characterization and tedium that is a non-starter for a TV medium. Is the show flawless? Nope it’s far from flawless but it is a pretty good adaptation.

@ThomasMeli81 Hello. That's almost worthy of a video essay. I'll respond to a few of your points - a full reply would involve another video! Here's the funny thing, for a TV show it was average (on the lower end of average). When i say "it's awful" - I mean compared to how good the source material is as a foundation. The show actually twisted Ye Wenjie's experiences to make her more sympathetic intentionally (leaving out Yang Weining's relationship) - I explain this in the video. This makes for a far less interesting character. About Wang Miao "having skin in the game". What i mean by this is that he does have children and a family. Compared to these "Oxford five" - he seems to live a contented life before the events of the 3 Body. They, on the other hand seem positively miserable. eg Jin Cheng's prescription drug addiction. They don't even SHOW the relationship from before between Jin and Will. Another example of constant "telling" not showing in this series. eg. just telling us their job positions in the bar - really was awful writing when they could just SHOW this. All in all, it's an average series which could have been great had it just been more faithful to the books. Tencent mostly followed the framework of the book and was far superior (if admittedly slow in places)

@@sinolit I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, because I found the source material, (specifically the first book) insanely boring and uneven. I very much welcomed significant changes because I nearly hated it, only the ideas in the book kept me going. The next books got much better, but were still filled with pace-killing info dumps that drove me crazy. I suspect we have sufficiently distinct aesthetic tastes that you will continue disliking the show, and that's fine. :) But here's my thoughts. Wang's kids hardly make an appearance in the book, so who cares that they exist?... Jin doesn't have a drug addiction, she has anxiety and is coping with an alien invasion and her world turning upside down. For someone who prides herself in knowing the world, the fact that physics is "being overturned" seems to suggest she'd take it pretty hard. Again, the intensity of her response is entirely consistent with her character. Taking a few more meds seems pretty understandable considering many people are committing suicide over it. As a whole, they are miserable because their entire lives are being upended... it seems a little unsympathetic to dismiss why they would be freaking out a bit. Also, Will is a counterexample - confronting his death with not a little grace, good-spiritedness, and courage. There's a lot to say about the showing-not-telling thing. I grant you the example of the bar, however, it is possible they chose this because they changed so many characters from the books and wanted to give a few to you right off the bat without any complication. And sure, they could have done it better, but even there, it can't be said that this is scene was anything close to a serious problem. Showing-not-telling involves a trade-off that takes more time. Telling allows for quick exposition and world-building, and they did it in a somewhat humorous way which had the implicit side-effect of showing why the group was so tight among themselves. It wasn't unskillful, and that is what matters... "telling" doesn't represent an aesthetic failure if it allows faster familiarity with who characters are so other aspects of the story can be developed more. And that it did just fine. That being said - many things were shown not told. A lovely example of this happens when Jin makes a comment about the fairy tale storybook, and Will responds with the exact date she gave it to him - indicating his intense love for her that he would remember such a thing, and she gets nervous and uncomfortable, and he immediately responds comforting her letting her know it's OK that it is unrequited. This was gorgeous, and honestly it was so subtle I missed her discomfort that he remembered the date the first time... the series is filled with these moments of profound subtext. Yes, we are "told" he loves her too, but that moment said so much more than that. I found that a closer watching of the show after I was frustrated the first time around revealed dozens upon dozens of these subtle shown-not-told moments, but if you don't like it, that's cool too!. :) That's all for now. Cheers!

The Netflix version has been widely criticized on Chinese social media, and as a fan of the Three Body Problem, I completely cannot accept this adaptation. "Netflix has turned the Three Body Problem into The Big Bang Theory," which is too bad. As a fan of the original work, I cannot accept this childish plot. The flickering of the universe turned into the blinking of the universe's eyes. When I saw the starry sky opening and closing like lights, I really laughed because I was very angry. The characters have been extensively adapted, breaking down one character in the book into several individuals and integrating the characteristics of several characters into one person. There were a lot of unnecessary ambiguous scenes, and when I saw Ye Wenjie and Evans having that kind of relationship, I almost fainted. On Chinese social media, the most criticized aspect of the Netflix version of the Three Body Problem is that it changed almost all characters except for Ye Wenjie to Europeans and Americans, which is what Netflix calls "internationalization". However, when it comes to Ye Wenjie and the Red Bank base, the use of Asian actors is too obvious in terms of ideology. In the "Crazy Era" section, many details are far from the real scenes in history, including incorrect fonts used in the dialogue and slogans that do not match the architecture of the era, because we know the truth. The scene presented by Netflix is different from what our grandparents told us, and from the information we have found, with numerous loopholes. The problem with Ye Wenjie's character is that she is not the kind of lunatic with a face full of resentment that Netflix portrays, let alone a malicious old lady. She is a very complex person, not full of resentment towards humanity. Her disappointment with human civilization is not resentment, otherwise she would not reveal the "Dark Forest Law" to Luo Ji, and she would not be a malicious and ugly person who casually engages in relationships with men.

@@sinolit Yes, I really appreciate you discussing the issues with this drama, because when I see those who haven't read the original talking about how the Netflix version of the Three Body Problem looks good, I frown and cannot understand all of this. If you are someone who has no knowledge of the original work, after watching the Netflix version of the Three Body Problem, you will think that it is a story of the protagonists falling in love, several people fighting against aliens to save the Earth, just like other space operas. But the reason why the Three Body Problem is loved by readers around the world is that it delves into the complexity of human nature and the darkness of the universe. There are also those imaginative ideas, but the effects presented by the Netflix version can greatly mislead audiences who have not been exposed to the original work, which makes it difficult for me to accept.

This series has the most anti communist stuff that's ever been shown, it shows people being framed and wrongly being persecuted by the party during cultural revolution, and this is a massive movie and book. If anything it shows that the censors are getting less strict. Also, most people rate breaking bad as one of the best series of time, higher than stranger things. Breaking Bad is ranked like number 1 or top 3 on IMDB top 250 tv series of all time. ST is not even top 50 or 100.

Those characters you mentioned that aren't in the Netflix version are in it. They are listed on IMDB and Benedict Wong is playing the policeman character.

i'll watch it out of curiosity. The Tencent series was solid and respected the book. The Netflix series doesn't seem to do this.

The movie is a masterpiece. The most powerful emperor is brought to his knees by a musician.
