The Chinese version is so very good. I have been recommending to people I know who don't mind subtitled shows. I am someone who gets bored with stories stretched out too far - I have dropped countless shows very quickly for wasting time - but I have to say I was not bothered by the length of Three-Body at all. I enjoyed every minute of it.

@@augustinefaithdefender They follow the book 100%, if you don't want watch it you can read the book. But if you don't want/like to read book, watch the Chinese version will make you understand everything. Some part is boring because thats part of the book filling information, you don't get excitement every episode because thats how it is in the book, only when the moment come, which is long period of building up/filing information.

They are race/gender swapping a couple characters to appeal to a Western audience. Liu Cixin has come out and said he understood this needed to happen and gave his blessing to the creators, he even suggested changing the lead character in the first book to a woman himself. They are also bringing in characters and plotlines from the second and third book for continuity, since they happen around the same time chronologically anyway. The shot of them looking into the canister is most likely the brain for Project Staircase. And yes they are leaning into spectacle with the stars instead of background radiation to highlight that this is a story about human society reacting to and accepting the impending invasion.
@user-lu4eq3qz5r5 ай бұрын
Perhaps it is because Liu Cixin knows that no matter how they transform, it is impossible to capture the essence that a Chinese novel wants to express.

I love the books and I love the Chinese adaptation, they nailed the tone so well, you can tell these people really care about the source material. As for the slower pacing, that is just how Chinese TV series are, but I really like how they took the bland characters from the book and expend upon, fleshing them out, intead of changing them to different characters like Netflix doing right now. So far I have little hope for the Netflix adaptation, mainly due to the previous clip that they released just so bad and they also diverted too much from the source material as far as I could tell.

Seems like this Augistina Salazar is a replacement of the scientist character who worked with the detective ( the one in the book who had a family, he used an old-fashioned camera and saw numbers when he developed the films, and the one who was spying in the game on the group supporting the trisolarians as the detective gave him that request/order)

@@DanExploresBooksI'll add a few things you might have missed in the trailer, the scene with the guy opening the canister, judging by who is stood around it (Wade and Cheng Xin), the canister definitely has Yun Tianmings brain in it. And the scene where Eiza or whatever her name is is walking through the rubble, if you look at the walls, they're sliced like ribbons so it's definitely the aftermath of the attack on the Judgement day.

Ayo let's go! Just finished Death's End last night and I'm so ready for this :D I have not watched the Chinese adaptation, but I just queued it up on Amazon, will start it soon, probably this week. I'm cool with slower pacing so I think I'll like it. I also love Da Shi, so I'm excited to see him be cool on screen About the Netflix version -- well, it would be kinda silly to have 2 different faithful adaptations, wouldn't it? So I'm totally down for the changes. Looks like they're doing away with the Cultural Revolution aspect, which, while I loved that part in the first book, makes sense to me for a Western audience. I'm also fine with character and location changes -- mix it up, all good. My mindset is just going in expecting it to be pretty good, hoping it'll be great, and giving it a fair shot. Will be cool to see some of these scenes adapted (like, yes, the THIRTY MILLION HUMAN BEING MOTHERBOARD lmaooooooo, where every person is just a binary bit or whatever lol) and I just hope it doesn't suck!
@KabbalahSherry7 ай бұрын
No, they show flashbacks of the Cultural Revolution in both trailers. You see the main character's father being dragged up on stage as they prepare to beat & humiliate him, etc in the 1st trailer... and you can see her younger self in THIS trailer, at the Red Coast base or whatever. So they aren't skipping that part at all. It's a HUGE factor in her reasoning in doing what she does in the 1st place - in sending the signal. She doesn't feel like Humans can govern themselves, and it's why she wants the Trisolarans to come. So they really couldn't leave those flashbacks out entirely.
@slidenaway7 ай бұрын
@@KabbalahSherry oh hm okay. Clearly I missed that lol, so thanks for calling it out. Well, I guess my impression is still that it’ll be a minor part of the story in comparison to how much of the book was spent on it - and again I’m okay with that. But I guess it’s impossible to know how much they’ll include until… we see the show 😌

I agree with almost every part what you said! The Chinese version is so slow pacing! But the vibe is correct. I would say the Netflix version is friendly to people who have not read the book, but not good for people who read the book. Front the trailer is just seems a normal Netflix show.

the first countdown scene appear in the trailer, where the girl wakes up in the train. It seems shes in a Fuxing Hao train looking at the giant ass pillar and the coathook so she might be in China. something worth noting
@tophers37567 ай бұрын
I haven't read the books, but I know the basic premise. Pete Peppers did a breakdown on his channel where he seemed to work out the various character changes from the book and some other changes that you also noted like the countdown. You might like it. I will give the Netflix series a chance, but the last three series I've gotten into from Netflix and Amazon were all canceled after 1 season so I'm wary. May check out the Chinese series. Surprisingly the CGI from that series looks better than the one from Netflix.

they are pushing the latina actress hard, they divided the main male character of the first book into two women, because is harder for women to fill men's shoes xD
@Hattori_F7 ай бұрын
I'm ok with the differences. Most of them I totally get, and like, (character changes, Sophon in the game, Thomas Wade), some of them I don't quite get (Alien headsets, sophons unfolding in broad daylight), but I could totally see how and where they would work. The really interesting characters for me are still intact, which are Da Shi, Ye and Evans so I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing here. Most of these other characters are just plot devices in the books and totally interchangeable ("what's his face", as you called him). Most of all they nailed the feel of the first book for me. I admired the accuracy of the Chinese version but could not stand the plodding pace and horrendous editing. I would not want anything like that for a big western adaptation, as it would be totally inaccessible for a general audience.
@DanExploresBooks7 ай бұрын
Ya. The one thing that makes the Chinese adaptation was just how many episodes it takes to get anywhere. It could have been 1/3 of the episodes.

I have not read the books, and I am like 13 episodes into the Chinese series. While I may understand but not agree with the pacing stuff(since I have read the book so nothing to compare it with), what is this 'horrible editing' stuff you're talking about? The special effects and editing have been awesome so far. What did you expect the editing to be like or what is wrong with it?

@charlesajones777 ай бұрын
It looks like they are trying to do two things: One, make the cast more international, which is understandable. And Two, introduce characters earlier. Many of the "new" characters seem to correspond to Chinese characters that show up in books 2 and 3. Unlike with Game of Thrones, they know the entire plot in advance, and so they can plan things out. Possibly better than the books did.
@trauty6666 ай бұрын
possibly better than the books!? blasphemy. :D
@charlesajones776 ай бұрын
@@trauty666 Well, look at The Expanse. That's one of the few examples where I think the show was actually better than the books. And the major reason why was because they knew everything that was going to happen in advance, so they could plan things out better.
@trauty6666 ай бұрын
@@charlesajones77 Sure its possible that a film or tv series could be considered better than actual book as you pointed out , I just do not share this view as you do. Did you see the chinese version ? It is extremelly well made in terms of atmosphere and staying true to the book. The Netflix serie will be modified story in 6 or 8 episodes and aimed to be as mainstream viewer friendly as possible. I personally dont care about netflix show ( but will watch it nonetheless with zero expectations). I still did not forgive the producers D&D ( known as dumb n dumber for ruining last season of Game of Thrones).

I'm hype for both adaptations. I want to see how Netflix handles it before I pass too much judgement on tone. Trailers have to get people hype and for a show to capture the scope of the books it HAS to be a massive production, and if it's going to be a massive production it HAS to get people watching, and to get people watching the trailers HAVE to convince the audience that the show about a bunch of science-stuff is actually going to be a hell of a ride with a lot of great characters and spectacle and cool ideas. Ultimately I do hope they don't dumb down the science stuff to the point of "Dexter" or whatever. I hope it's treated with a certain level of respect but that it doesn't mean we have to have it slow and methodical. Having a more 'action adventure mystery' pace will be OK for the Netflix take, as it should still hit the major drama beats and doesn't preclude things being serious and intense. I mean even the Chinese version trailer has a lot of action thriller elements to it. If they do change anything significant about the way it's told, hopefully it's to add some proper dramatic nuance and character arcs. Sure the detective is great but he's about it? I hope more characters have some nuance and depth. The showrunners managed to deliver that in GoT for most of it's run; not sure how much was them and how much was the great cast and how much was GRRM. Either way, I'll be really curious if they can make us actually care about all these characters. Now, I def want to check out the Chinese version but been waiting a bit. I've heard it's slow, and that's fine. I like slow. Except that lately my only time to watch TV is in the background while working on my PC, and if I also have to read subtitles I can't really put it on in the background; so I'd have to find dedicated time to sit through it. I hear a lot of the slow pace is from redundant material due to its formatting: so I would like to see a condensed version that was re-edited to omit redundancy into fewer long episodes. Worse case the longer I wait the more episodes will be complete when I do jump in.

To answer you question about who that girl seeing number, she is gender swapping of Wang Miao. The western (white people) countries don't want use/hire Asian actor to be the main character or main lead, I can understand that (since all 3 book of the series are 85% to 90% Asian character, but this is western adaptation need to adjust with the culture) But they should at least stay faithful as the story in the book. Change the first book male lead gender? into women? what's next, Luo Ji going to become female too? Cheng Xin going to become man? Don't get me wrong, there is lots wonderful and smart female character in the book that are FEMALE for them to cast female actor. They can used that. But no, they want male character to become women (and this happened a lots recent years in movie/tv show) What is wrong with male still as MALE. Now they destroy everything.
@scottwatrous7 ай бұрын
From what I read in the article about the show from Netflix, They basically split the character of Wang Miao into a group of 5 scientists from Cambridge, all with different personalities and traits. This makes sense for a show in that it lets them discuss what they're seeing and thinking without it just being one character having to explain to random people all the issues,, or worse, have a narrator or have him talking in his head. Ultimately since the scientists were always an international group in the book, the choice to have the modern story take place with a group from London vs a group from China is a little dissapointing but also understandable. Beyond audiences being more familiar, it would mean having to send at least some of the film team to China, which, would probably subject it to scrutiny and control they don't want. I'm sure they'll still involve Chinese aspects of the story when it's absolutely vital, but, otherwise it can be set anywhere. Ultimately the showrunners said they already talked with Liu Cixin about how to adapt it and he said to make it work for their format. So don't expect that any specific character will always stay that way.

@@scottwatrous From all the trailers, the only Chinese aspect that will be kept will be the Cultural Revolution aspect, so basically, in an adaptation of a Chinese novel, Chinese characters (from China) will be solely the bad guys, while all the Heroes are from elsewhere.
