@@jikGeek The fact is, Wang Miao wasn't really a developed character in the book anyway, plus he never shows up again in later books, his character was only fleshed out by the Tencent Chinese adaptation, so I have no problem with replacing him as long as someone get to experience what he did in the book, also I believe Eiza Gonzalez's character resembled Wang Miao the most.

I haven't read the book trilogy, but I have watched the Chinese Tencent series 3-Body. It's available on KZbin, and the first two episodes are free. I loved the 30-episode series, and I'll be comparing it to Netflix's version. The Tencent series is a slow burn with a grounded take, even with the fantastical elements. I enjoyed the computer-animated VR version of the game more than the realistic environment. To my surprise, the show has quite a few critiques on the Cultural Revolution, despite being censored for the Chinese audiences.
@ItsLitBookReviews7 ай бұрын
Yes, I watched and thoroughly enjoyed the Chinese adaptation! I thought the VR scenes were really cool, and hopefully with a bigger budget Netflix will make them even more awe-inspiring. I'll also be curious to see how their version adapts the Chinese Revolution and all the themes from the first book. - Jesse
@tiagdvideo7 ай бұрын
Agree. Regarding the Cultural Revolution - the Tencent series is close to the original Chinese version of the book. The English translation changed the order of the story and grouped the Cultural Revolution scenes towards the start (in the Chinese version they are scattered as brief flashbacks) as a result many thought the Tencent version had deliberately cut these scenes. I'm also interested in how the Netflix will handle these.

The thing with the character called sophon is, that it is a mistranslation. The chinese for sophon is 智子, which literally translates as something like "wisdom particle". The explanation for the english word "sophon" that makes the most sense to me is, that it is a contraction of "sophia" (greek for wisdom) and proton. Now here is where it gets tricky for non-chinese natives like me (and you). 智子 as a combination of characters is also used in japanese, for the female name "Tomoko". So, without many additional spoilers, I can tell you that later in the story a character named Tomoko appears. In the english translation of the book, however, she is consistently and falsely called sophon. That is not her name, it is a translation error, but since it's in the official english translation, apparently Benioff and Weiss are just going with it. Sorry for the rant... EDIT: (just editted out a grammar mistake)

im so nervous for this show. I want it to be good but Netflix has dropped the ball so many times. I will say it makes me want to re-read the series. From just this trailer it looks really promising I having a feeling that they are going to be adding in things from the later book to flesh this first season out.

Da Shi is my favorite character from the T3BP novel and in the trailer, Benedict Wong's interpretation is dead wrong in every scene. He looks worried, unguarded, and worst of all, weak! He should be stoic, firm, and unwavering. His first line in the trailer is also expositional; a countdown!? Never would have guessed, thank you so much for telling me. Anyway I've read this series 6 or 7 times now. Dark Forest is my favorite novel of all time and to Mr "Benedict Cumberbatch," you definitely should read it. Either way I'm very excited to see that a wider audience will soon be exposed to this story (been dying to talk about it with someone other than my wife), and I'm even more excited to know that it will undoubtedly push more people to read the books.
