When I bought these 3 Atari Lynx handheld systems, all I knew was that they are broken. Let’s see if we can fix them by replacing some capacitors and cleaning some game cartridge pins. And of course, we’ll get the chance to learn more about this awesome old-school gaming system!

When you have power on issues with the Lynx, it is important to use your bench supply and provide +5v to the main bypass caps to do what we call the Dead or Alive test. Don't even need a game because the system will tell you to insert a game because you are bypassing the normal power on circuits this way. If it comes up in the dead or alive, then you know the power stage components are where you need to focus your attention.

its amazing to me how many things are thrown away or sold as not working just for the want of some basic maintenance or a quick fix with low skill, the components swap on the second one is a higher skill ask for your average consumer but dirty game slots and things like that are a gift to your repair shop and an easy thing to do as a consumer. I guess some people either don't care or have been told too many times that they cant repair tech so they don't try

May want to think about dropping in an IPS LCD backlit replacement screens (Benn Venn or the like), replacing the fluorescent backlit LCD screens. Especially if going to keep one for yourself. I've done to my Lynx and a few other systems. Makes for a huge quality of life improvement, making the screens so much easier to see.

Change the voltage regulator out with a modern and more reliable regulator. 9.99 volts is too high and you can damage the Lynx.

I thought you said the last time you worked on these handhelds, that there have to be a game cartridge inserted in order to turn on!!

Suggestion: Find a screen mod for these lovelies and install them! Also, white vinegar will eat the corrosion from old capacitors, but you'll need IPA (rubbing alcohol) to rinse the vinegar off.

The Lynx was really unusual when it came out. Being able to play it either right or left handed was neat. Unfortunately it suffered from tge same problems as the Turbo Xpress and Game Gear. It was way too heavy and ran through batteries.

I never knew that game was Matchbox branded, I used to in the late 70's and through the eighties play 5 a side football on the playing fields next door to Matchbox's Hackney marsh factory, best match although got drubbed badly our side was the sunday our opponents didn't turn up and the opponents of Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson's 5 a side also was a no show so we had a match instead and they abs owned us but the after game drinks was epic and Bruce was very much a larger than life character lol

A good way to clean contacts is unconventional, sprinkle a healthy amount of magic eraser dust in the contacts and repeatedly insert and remove a game cart. Remove magic dust with IPA and canned air.

I prefer the Game gear over the gameboy when I was kid but the Gameboy ate less batteries so you can take it all over the United States easier.
