Thanks for the great video. I am going through the nightmare of Marek's right now. I adopted a trio from a neighbor and unknowingly have infected my flock. It couldn't come at a worse time of the year either because cleaning feels almost impossible in 20*F or below weather. Everything is just frozen here. I have never felt such defeat with my animals because the disease is so brutal & quick to kill. I have learned some hard lessons for sure.

I live in Southern California and our chickens are being "plagued" with Virtulant Newcastle Disease. The state is having to cull entire flocks if one chicken in the flock tests positive for it. There is a protocol for how to decontaminate to prevent the spreading, warnings against moving chickens, etc. but people often don't know or don't follow and it's spreading city by city, county by county. We are surrounded by outbreaks and a case was found in a nearby city. Everyone is holding their breath in my area as it hasn't yet reached us. If you love your chickens and they are a part of your pet family, this is very heartbreaking.

Becky, I bought a flock of peeps from a tractor supply store in Bowling Green Ohio. Some of the birds were infected with Marek's disease. I've isolated two chickens that have paralyzed legs but used my own supplements to nurse them back from death but the paralysis is still there and both chickens are eating well but I know they have no quality of life and I must destroy them, Sadly. It's hard coming to terms with killing them now as they seem to enjoy each other's company and are both eating together. ❤ today I found a batam, part silky with a large hard lump mass on its left upper thigh, it seems there's no end to this as all of my 40+ chickens were raised together. 😢

The toes on the first leg that went still don't spread quite properly. No sign of improvement for first 2 weeks. Ihave had others that die from similar...but usually find them too late. Marek's is a herpes virus that is shed through dander, if one bird has it most likely ALL of them have a latent form already (and may have had it for years). Most flocks in my area have it (Middle GA). Healthy birds can live a lifetime and never show signs but STRESSED birds, especially young adolescents being picked on during integration can succumb. Like herpes in humans it is triggered by stress, but in the case of chickens an outbreak is usually fatal for the bird that was affected. I lost some young birds to Marek's a few years ago, now I only add birds when one of my adult hens goes broody and will raise tiny chicks with the flock (which prevents stress from integration). Since I have done that I have not lost a bird to Marek's for 3+ years. Though I did get some herpes meds from my vet (Valtrex made for humans) and if a bird is injured or otherwise sick I give them that to prevent the already stressed bird from getting an active form of Marek's (it has not been tested on chickens but seems to work fine here). As stated my flock has had it for years, some of my birds are 7 or 8 years old and perfectly healthy
@BeckysHomestead5 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is your "healthy" looking birds spread the virus their whole lives. It is much better to cull them and raise virus free birds☀️❤️☀️
@anonz9755 жыл бұрын
The virus is spread by wild birds OR by people that visit feed stores and other places and pick up infected dander. Culling birds at the first hint of illness is very reason chickens die from common "mild" ailments like Marek's when wild birds do NOT. I will not cull my flock, there are breeders that produce very resistant birds simply because they are smart enough NOT to cull and they raise healthier chickens as a result. Their lives are worth more than the $2 for a new chick.
@cj5975 жыл бұрын
Becky's Homestead Totally agree with you Becky! Poultry diseases are at their worst at the moment in England. Culling is the way to go. All birds should be vaccinated to LQ at hatch. Otherwise, you are spreading your chickens’ disease, people visiting are picking up your birds’ diseases through dander and poo. People need to practice stricter and harsher biosecurity, there should also be more education available on this. I live in a high risk area, all my birds are vaxxed to LQ but I still practice very high quality biosecurity. What many don’t realise when their birds are ill is that they are suffering. It’s not just something they pick up and keep in their pocket. It affects them physically. You are also endangering other’s birds’ health. Again, I 100% agree and it’s great to see you talking about this!
@cj5975 жыл бұрын
Anon Z Wild birds DO die from the diseases which have been bred in domestic poultry. Continuing to breed ill poultry and sell these birds to people is very irresponsible and a very serious issue. Here in the UK you could be fined and even prosecuted as diseases like Mareks are notifiable, meaning if you see or know of ill birds, you are obliged to contact DEFRA. I’d assume purposely breeding and distributing ill birds would have harsher consequences.

@roxannejones79595 жыл бұрын
Hello Iwona, UV light can be beneficial, but then again, natural UV light from the sun is good too. I would not use colloidal silver because of the possibility of silver building up in the tissues especially the heart valves. There are a few people allergic to silver and that could be harmful.

Ok Becky, I have a couple questions I didn't hear answered in this video. First of all say I have laying Hens and feeder chickens total chicken 50. I keep feeders separate from laying Hens but say I find one chicken with either type of pocks virus. After removing that one chicken should I 100% check all other chickens? Or maybe just to be on the safe side go ahead a start watering all the chickens with the Apple Cider Vinegar mix or is there an issue with the vinegar? I didn't hear you say if you find one after removing it what about the rest to me it doesn't sound safe to waste time and slowly keep an eye on the other birds I would think you would want to react right away in some manner. Then as far as treating the Hen house for 6 weeks with the 50/50 mix wouldn't that create a bad insect problem possibly even termites because Apple Cider vinegar attracts insects big time

With all that going on, you will have to build a sturdy wooden hen house and a strong fully enclosed run. Keep in mind, Chickens stress easy and when hens are stressed they don't lay well. You can add oak tea to the chickens water. I give all my animals oak tea, my chickens have never been sick. If you have oak trees (all oak trees good) you can take any part of an oak tree as long as it is alive,(except acorns)boil it in water as long as you wish. I prefer to make my tea dark which you can get with the root. Leaves will give you a light to dark tea depending on the amount of leaves you use. You can also use branches, because of the inner bark,(no need to strip away the outer bark.) You can also reuse the oak, just let it air dry. I let mine sit on a plastic lid in my cabinet. You only need to change the leaves, branches or root when the water no longer changes color. My husband and I also drink oak tea, we like it sweet, hot or cold. You can not over dose so feel free to drink as much as you want. Oak is an antidote as well, so if someone or an animal is in need of an antidote this helps. I have used oak a few times as an antidote, sometimes you don't even know you need an antidote. You can also use the tea as a wash for poison ivy and other rashes.

Hi Becky. I love your videos and have learnt so much from watching them. One of my young hens had the external fowl pox at 4 months. She recovered well. About a month later, another young hen (5months) fell ill and refused to eat. I'm wondering if she contracted the internal fowl pox. Poor thing seems so miserable and needs to be fed using a syringe into her mouth. It has been 2.5 weeks already. Do you think she has z chance to live or is it better to just cull it to end her misery?
@BeckysHomestead5 жыл бұрын
Is she getting any better at all? Maybe blend up some meat and water to feed her. It sounds like she has the internal type to me☀️❤️☀️

@@BeckysHomestead Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately, I have to put an end to her misery as she stopped wanting to eat or drink even with our help 😢

I went to my mother inlaws farm and she has like 25-30 hens/chickens. I love farm fresh eggs so i get excited about eggs. My 2nd day at the farm im seeing dead hens around. Dead, no wound or any indications it has been attacked by something. My MIL said she gets that all the time, they just die 😑. And that is why she keeps a lot of chickens. My MIL is not the cleanest person in the world. And obviously she was not taking care of the chickens well.Anyway just incase i stopped eating eggs from her farm . But the thing is she gives away her chicken eggs and meat to her neighbors😲. I told her not to or at least find out first why and how they died but she said no worries. I always wondered what killed those hens🤔.

It could be a host of things. Overcrowding, poor sanitation, and poor diet contribute to diseases that take their toll. Dead chickens need to be removed. Good luck educating them. Many people do not respect animals. This is cruelty. Birds are some of the most intelligent beings known.
