I love Maastricht, I have only been there twice in my life, because for somebody from "boven de rivieren" it is far away (for Dutch standards at least, I know most Americans would say it is next door). I love how the city is so unique compared to the cities in the north, not being totally flat, not the canal structure you often see in the north and with a beautiful square and church. In a way it feels un-Dutch and if the people want they also can speak a form of Dutch "waar geen touw aan vast te knopen is". :) But usually they don't do that to non Maastrichtenaren, because I found the people to be very kind and hospitable.

Hi. I love your videos and have watched them all. I lived in The Netherlands on two occasions. Once from age 3 to 6 and again from age 13 to 19. I lived in the city of Helmond, near Eindhoven. It's just a typical Dutch city with a canal in the middle. I really miss the Dutch food which is the greatest. I've never seen you mention nasi balls (rice) or bami balls ( noodles), but you should try them. My favorite food is Rijst Tafle which I know you have tried. The good ting is I take a lot of cruises on Holland America lines where the have a Dutch Cafe offering krokenten, pea soup, bitterballen, uitsmijhters and other typical Dutch treats. I know you don't like salty licorice, but I'm addicted. Hope to see a video of you in Helmond sometime. Check out their cube houses there. Your Dutch accents are getting better Goede Morgen John Hall

You also where at the Plague house outside the Hell gate in Maastricht. And not so far from that is the city wall 5 koppen. In 1638, na het mislukte Verraad van Maastricht, werden hier de afgehakte hoofden van de vijf hoofdverdachten op een staak tentoongesteld. It´s been a while and this part of the wall has fallen down partly and has been rebuilt, but in my youth it had a ledge, and the story was the heads where placed on that ledge so you could see them from outside the city walls. You know how it goes, in my adlut life there suddenly was talk about spikes. So rumor has it and I have seen a documentary in my youth about the hidden Templar Chappel underneath the Red-chappel at the city center Church at Vrijthof. But they made underground parking and if I am not mistaken this Templar piece of history has been erased. In my adult life also learning about the Mithras cult, I can see what the beef became between the Templars and the Church. Also before the parkinglot underneath Vrijthof the religious people at that church didn't like me asking questions about it. And denied it was there. If I remember correctly the enterence was outside the city, you had to enter a cave, and went underneath the city. So these parts should probably still exist. I had an aunt living in Maastricht and in her house she had secret passages. It is a rich history here in the south, with the churches and power structures. And a lot "forgotten" history.

I'm not frpm Maastricht or the Limburg province but a good (lady)friend told me that Zuurvlees was originaly made from horse meat. Limburg had a lot of coal mines and they used horses for transpirtation ondergruond. The sad thing is that these horses only saw daylight at the end of their werking life just before being butchered. The horse meat was cheap so ideal for the poor miners. Of course in the early 20th century horses went obsolete in the mines and replacement by machinery.and people started to use pork as an infredient for zuurvlees. After the discovery of natural gas in the province of Groningen coal became obsolete The last coal mine was closed in the early 1970's.

Rijstevlaai and kruisbessenvlaai I like the most as a vlaai flavor. Apart from zuurvleisch ofc. Did you visit the bookstore inside of the church next to het vrijthof? And pineapple on pizza? Nope, Nope, Nope not for me. Rather eat 'plain' prosciutto. Aachen - Maastricht is really easy to visit both as you get to experience. Good timing too with christmas markets everywhere now. Did you try gluwhein? I rather have a German beer but that food looked delicious to me! And I can't ignore a good pretzel. Next weekend I go to Charles Dickens fest in Deventer. Enjoy waiting in the queue for 2 hours but that is worth your wait because you will get to travel back in time nearby de Walstraat. Been there before and still enjoy it! You will too next year.

You said that the language changed when you went to Aachen, but actually, people from Maastricht and Aachen can understand each other very well, because the local dialect is almost the same, whereas if someone from Groningen would speak his local dialect, he would not be understood in Maastricht. (or anywhere else in the Netherlands, for that matter). I also hope you have learned not to rely on trains in the Netherlands. Since privatization, all public transport is hopeless in the Netherlands. The train from Aachen to Maastricht was supposed to go on to Liege from this month, but Belgium is deliberately stalling because they do not want a private railway company in their country. They also insist that all Dutch traindrivers must speak French, and that is not a language most Dutch can speak.

I really don't like pizza myself, however, the only GOOD pizza you can have is in Italy, period! And I am NOT even mentioning the other food in that country which is absolutely GREAT................btw...........did you know that the Italians don't want any McDonalds along the highways because they think it is otherly crap???!! Thumbs up, love your vlogs!

Very nice video on Maastricht and Aachen but sincerely do not mention the city of Liège in your title if you have not been there, it is completely normal to have problem with the means of transport but I think that a alternative would have been possible around 30km between Maastricht and Liège. I find it quite a shame to ignore a city which deserves better treatment in this video, although currently the city is in full metamorphosis with the construction of a tram, it has an exceptional heritage and a local gastronomy recognized. Anyway this is my opinion.

Mushrooms don't belong in real authentic Zuurvlees (chuck roast, vinegar, unions, caster sugar, laurel, clove, gingerbread, apple syrup, salt, pepper, butter and water)( the real, real authentic zuurvlees is made with horsemeat!)! And the Rijstvlaai (Rice pie) is more authentic than the Puddingvlaai met kruimels!

the mushrooms are in the vol au vin, not the zuurvlees :)

Never say ‘ik heb honger’….. You should say ‘ik heb trek’. Use ‘hungry’ only in serious situations.

People who order those salty tasteless cardboard disks at big pizza chains have no business in complaining about pineapple on pizza’s. Enjoy your Hawaii.
