People, please do NOT ever never use craigslist looking for a room to rent or room mate. I don't care how desperate you are, DON'T. A few years ago I went thru pure hell 2 different times renting a room. I will not go into the terrible details but bad doesn't describe both of those times. I found a Craigslist add for 2 free dogs, we planned to meet at the dog park: I got there and no one showed up and my calls weren’t being sent. I waited 3 hours. I then started walking home and a car was following me. I then went into the mall to avoid it, and later on a older man was following me around the stores. I went to a security guard and he brought me to his office in the hallways beyond the mall. I filled out a report and waited a while and left, no one else followed me. It was a scary experience.

I remember when Luka Magnotta used to post on a forum i was a moderator on. He tried repeatedly to upload the videos of him torturing cats. We reported everything to the authorities but they simply werent interested. The cops here have a spot right next to the jail that's specifically for online transactions where the buyer and seller meet in person (Craigslist, Facebook, etc). You have to go through a gate to get in or out, there are cameras everywhere, and the whole interaction between buyer and seller takes place in full view of the cops. I think that's the only way I'd do one of those transactions where you have to meet in person. If the buyer/seller is uncomfortable being around cops or otherwise just refuses meet there, that's a red flag.

So..another sad and just disgusting thing that Luka did was play with John’s head in the bathtub water like a bathtub toy. It’s just tragic and heartbreaking. I can confirm that stalkers can get your information by just your phone number. I'm in UK and a man got my number pretending to be train line customer services. I had called the usual customer service number, he answered and said my query can be answered using a different number, what I didn't realise that the number he gave me was his personal mobile(cell) number. Once he had my number he managed to get my address (I was living with my parents at the time), he sent flowers and called constantly. I called police and gave them the number he gave me. They tracked him down to a town in Scotland. I live in England about 200 miles away from him. I changed my number and moved out of my parents house. I've never heard from him since but hearing stories like this brings it all back 😔

We don't have craiglist in Germany, but different sites. And I have a number 1rule, if I have a potential buyer come over to my house and pick something up: never be alone at home. If my husband is at a business trip and can't be there with me I ask a neighbor to come over and wait till the person is left. Never had a creepy experience except creepy direct messages,but beeing careful is better than don't care.

I am lucky to live in a smaller town and I use Craigslist for items like furniture and things too big for ebay. I NEVER put any info like phone number or address in my ad!! I use the service provided where you email back and forth but are hidden from view until you feel safe. I also put in the ad that me and my husband are selling the item. I am single but I feel better this way. And for heaven's sake DON'T HAVE YOUR ITEM IN YOUR HOUSE. Put it in your garage or back porch or whatever. Keep people out of your house. Once they are in, they see you alone or what other things you own.
