If playing your toms is an uncomfortable, scary thing for you - causing you to tend to avoid them - then today’s lesson is for you!
Don’t worry - This is a super common issue many of my students come to me dealing with, and we’re able to fix it in a few steps.
Today you’ll learn 3 simple but creative ways to use toms in music:
1. “The Beginner’s Cheat”
2. “The U2”
3. “The Church Drummer”
By the end of today you won’t fear tom grooves, and you’ll have the freedom & creativity to even fake your way through a tom-heavy song. YOU CAN DO THIS.
I believe that ANYONE can learn the drums, and I believe you’re far more capable of becoming a great drummer than you think you are. Don’t sell yourself short! SUBSCRIBE for more Non Glamorous videos that get straight to the point of solving drumming frustration. Stay Non Glamorous, Everyone!

Dig your videos. Though I'm far from a beginner (44 years, a decent number as a living) videos like this take me back and get me to take time to work on the fundamentals. No matter how long we play, always a good thing.

I'm such a non glam drummer (beginner) Thanks this is helpful, I don't have cymbals yet so I continue to practice using only TOMS, SNARE & BASS. 👍

Listen to Peter Gabriel's third solo album (also known as Melt), the drummer uses no cymbals at all and it's such a great album!

Why is it RLR both only once to start and then it becomes RLRLboth repeatedly thereafter?
@Frank1979Zappa
@Frank1979Zappa Ай бұрын
@@kimlombard2676 Because there is a RL at the end of the bar, and then you start at the beginning. And then it’s actually RLRLR both repeatedly.

Definitely has to be “Whiteout”. Great video Stephen. I don’t think you’ll get too many comments about “could have done the video in a tenth of the time” with this one 👍

This song got me into tom grooves. Saucerful of secrets has a cool combo of "marching band snare" and tom groove too

Just wish the first 4 minutes wasn't yadeeyahda, and did not feel like a promotional sales gimmick, all whoohoo, pretend Im happy useless time consuming repeating of the same unimportant information. Get to the point, this should have been under 5 minutes.

Playing my toms is not a problem. Playing with only one up one down is. When forced to do such a task on a "house" kit, I find myself wondering how to change my muscle memory on the fly. Especially when things aren't adjusted to me such as tone and placement of toms. Although I suffer through it and I often wonder why cutting four strings off a guitar isn't considered the same thing. I grew up hearing awesome tom fills that I will never hear again with most of the drummers out there. One up one down is what I call a cookie cutter kit and is very boring to me. Drummers need to step it up and just say no to cookies. Give me variety like Avenged Sevenfold, Phil Collins, Godsmack, Van Halen, Dave Matthews Band etc etc. The more toms the more interesting music becomes. Power to the players!

Tell that mess to pretty much every Jazz drummer past and present, I think they will find your statement rather asinine 🤣
@markfinney7387
@markfinney7387 Ай бұрын
@@mrmisfit635 You are aware that Elvin Jones and Tony Williams eventually evolved from a 4 piece kit to a 6 piece for Elvin and a 7 piece set for Tony right? Even the great Steve Smith usually plays on a set with 3 rack toms as his standard kit. So, nothing asinine about any of this at all whatsoever. I rest my case.
