3 Days on Lundy Island
Lundy Island sits just off of the North Devon coastline. Rising from the Atlantic Ocean this granite isle keeps many secrets of a colourful past. Known to be inhabited for over 3000 years, Lundy is now a haven for humans and wildlife alike. Having been to Lundy many times before, two friends and myself decided that instead of the normal day trip we would stay for a few days, to really get the feel of the place when all the day trippers sail away. We left Bideford quay on a pleasant morning in July and enjoyed a calm sail across the 22 miles of fresh Atlantic waters. After disembarking we made our way up the steep path to the little village where we got the key to our accommodation in the old Lighthouse. So I photographed the rest of that day and enjoyed watching the day visitors get back on the Oldenburg and sail away. The next morning I was up to catch the sunrise, and it was worth it, with a beautiful clear sky, calm seas and virtually no breeze. Back for breakfast, and then the big tour around the Island trying to capture as many of the interesting buildings and features as possible, along with the stunning views. In truth Lundy is very green with grass and ferns and grey with granite. The rocks fall hundreds of feet down to the crystal clear waters, however, this muted colour pallet is rather underwhelming for colour photography. With this in mind this collection of images are all in black and white to focus on the shape, form and atmosphere of this rugged and charming isle. The morning of our last day heralded a change in the weather, and so the gunnery on the West side had an harsher feel, and the deserted buildings told a tale of a tough existence. We finished a trip with a sail around the Island and then headed back for home. I hope you enjoy my Photographic collection of 3 Days on Lundy, along with the music of Moby.
