Almost all backpackers and campers have the same problem, what to do with partially used fuel canisters. Enter Flipfuel. This ingenious device allows you to transfer fuel between canisters. I came across this backpacking gadget last year and it found it to be extremely helpful, as I have dozens of partially filled canisters littering my garage. This has help me reduce my clutter, get empty canisters recycled, and make sure I never pack a halfie again.
In this video I go backpacking with Eric Flottman, the founder of Flipfuel. Since we both live in Arizona, we decided to go backpacking in the Superstition Mountains just outside of Phoenix, AZ.

@@ggs0605 Thank you very much! I try to be cinematic. As to your other question, b roll is a filmmaking term. "A roll" is the actual story driving footage, b roll is the supporting footage. For example a shot of running water or a plant with cool light on it.

Love that he is a Scoutmaster teaching this. I am a soon to be former Cubmaster as my second boy has moved to the troop and now I have two there. Cubs was family car camping style and the troop is working on you will carry all you need so make sure you need it. My older one weighs just over 80lbs and he puts his 55l pack on it dwarfs him. He is learning to figure out what he needs and next year is going out for a high adventure camp that those ounces count.

Love hearing your scouting story. Priority number one with the new scouts is that they have a good time. Make sure his hip belt fits snug and that he doesn't carry too much weight. The rest usually falls in place naturally.

YOU’RE MAKING ME HOMESICK FOR ARIZONA! I was born and raised there, but have been gone since ‘95. My parents still live there so I come back regularly and I have driven past Weaver’s Needle hundreds of times, but have never seen it from the other side like that. Pretty cool, so thanks for this video. Actually, growing up I was always afraid of hiking in the Superstitions after hearing all of the horror storied of hikers getting lost or going missing.

Eric, not sure if you've ever addressed this, but in your overnight experiences in desert environments, do you ever encounter creepy-crawly things (snakes in particular)? It seems that might be a common experience as they seek warmth in your tent/sleep system. Great video as always!

General rule is to not leave a sleeping bag out and unattended during the day as snakes can find them to be particularly inviting places for a nap. But it's never happened to me thank goodness. Worst I've had is scorpions find an overnight home in my boots, and another scorpion take a day-long ride in the neck of my life jacket while rafting. That was a surprise! Generally though I find the encounters with dangerous things like rattlesnakes to be quite rare.

To backpack the Superstitions? November thru March is best. Or in general? Ideal backpacking season depends on the area for sure, but I'd say if you can time it with mild temps soon, before the bugs and mosquitos get really intense, that's the best! But basically there are great year round options as long as you're prepared for the environment.

Yeah I bought one of those 3 years ago on Aliexpress for a few bucks. They've been around for quite a long time. Just saw that he charges 33 bucks for this. Looks like Peralta to Fremont Saddle. That’s where you get the big view of Weavers Needle. Continue another half mile to Lone Tree to the right instead of going down like they did.

There are plenty of these from the same Chinese factory that will brand and color them however you like on Amazon right now for less than $15. It is possible to overfill a canister, but it is not a good idea. Overfilling a canister could in worst case lead to an explosion. I always wheigh my canisters to make sure I don't overfill them.

I would not try to add fuel to a brand new canister, they are already pressurized to capacity.

I don't understand why everyone carries those cans around. I hate not knowing how much fuel is in a can. I carry a alcohol stove and a twig stove. They weigh next to nothing since both are titanium. They cool extremely fast. Ive never ran out of twigs. I use the alcohol for water or coffee only. I just don't understand why people think these loud gas stoves are so great. I also watched a video where the guy called for rescue because he ran out of fuel. Was using stove to melt snow. And only had backpack meals. He told rescue he was out of food because he was clueless about survival. It amazes me how gear dependent some are.

Not sure this is a good idea. For one thing it is illegal to transport refilled containers that are not designed to be refillable on any highway (though getting caught is unlikely). The big one though is that these canisters are not at all designed to be refillable and you risk them bursting/exploding (even brand new ones can do this, I had one explode a few years ago, fortunately I had stepped away when it went off). The metal is very thin, and the expansion and contraction of the canister from refilling and using it weakens the metal walls. If you are going to do this, I would not refill a canister more than once.

There are some cautions people should have around over-filling containers. It's a good idea to use a scale to weigh the canisters to avoid over filling. I've never heard about these being illegal move (although fuel canisters in general are regulated for shipping).

I’m not sure DOT restrictions apply to the amounts of fuel being discussed. The concern about expansion and contraction of the canisters seems a bit far fetched ( though of course anything is possible). As long as you’re not overfilling the canisters, you’re more likely to get frostbite from accidental release rather than causing a canister to rupture just by transferring one to another. You can make any fuel canister explode in a hot enough car. If I made these gadgets , however, id absolutely be testing this since a video blowing stuff up would do well on KZbin!

A part of this would come down to how the refill is done. I go to fill my propane tank for my grill it is pumped under pressure. This is using thermodynamics and gravity to transfer between them. They have adapters to take a propane tank and refill those Coleman canisters using just gravity. I would be more concerned about different qualities of gas being transferred.

​@@jhaas68865the biggest problem would be a rupturing tank that has been over filled. These liquified gases expand quite a lot as they heat up in the sun or similar hot environment above normal room temperature. A factory full canister is really 80% full by volume, leaving critical room for expansion. If you're not weighing it as you're refilling, it's very easy to overfill... just shaking the canister to hear if it's full doesn't cut it.

FlipFuel is not the original innovator of this. CampingMoon and Lixada have had this for a long time before FlipFuel even existed. What we really need are isobutane dot legal refillable canisters with outfitters like REI, Bass Pro, Moosejaw etc doing the refills of these things. Keep plenty of this garbage out of landfills.

They were never selling you a tent, claiming to solve your problems, promoting the newest GPS watch. The hiked, smiled, and shared. All of these lames were just gathered together by Outdoor Vitals. All grifters! They should start a home shopping network or something so the backpacking genre can be reserved for backpacking. It's clear as day these guys all love money more than backpacking. It's. @@ericcomp7032 I think this is conflating creators who make content for recreation and those who make it as a profession. As a profession, you have to make a living. In our capitalist economy, that means earning money from companies and organizations. Within those constraints, creators like these are doing an admirable job of balancing their needs with their audience’s desires.

Murky water doesn't mean bad water. If it's shallow and under the sun then the bacteria is dead in the water, just avoid the obvious murky parts which shadows said bacteria and you're good to drink.
