My wife and I found nearzero a couple years ago. We were looking for some summertime sleeping bags/quilts. We ended up buying 2 of the "quilts" Dan had on this trip. We still have them and they are surprisingly good! At the time they didn't offer as much as they have now. We did end up having a zipper issue with one of them. The guy was awesome to deal with. He replaced the entire quilt/bag and wouldn't let us send the old one in until we received the new one. Because of how awesome he was, I ordered a few other things from him! To this day, I'm still using the NZ0 stove and it works great! My wife and I still use the titanium sporks also. We have sent a few people over there that were new to backpacking. A couple had purchased a variation of the pack "deal" like Dan has. Not the all in everything one but some of the other variations. I can honestly say they have solid gear that will last! Customer service is amazing! I think anyone starting out should seriously look into what they have to offer. Not the lightest gear out there but definitely worthy gear to get someone started. Never used the NZ0 tent but by the looks of it, I think it and the sleep system would be the last things a new backpacker would have to replace as they get more experienced.

I wouldn't fret - you've done what EVERYONE does, and while the kit is pretty good for a first timer....kinda, its all knockoff. 800.00 more and you have the cream of the crop in gear. Either way, if you kept going you'd grow out of that kit pretty soon and spend just like you did. We're still looking for the Nemo (the character) among us who can buy once cry once. It might be a myth. As long as you're out there. peace.

The band is back together again! Love it! Also, I’ve got the new Nemo Hornet OSMO 3 person tent, which weighs just over 3 lbs. I’ve only set it up at home, but it is spacious enough for two 25” pads and a dog. The walls aren’t as vertical as your Dagger, but might be worth a shot.

I got that same carabiner in a Cairn box 4+ years ago. I use it as my main key ring and have loved having it. Used it many of times backpacking/camping. I just got back from a trip to Alaska and made sure to bring it.

I use the Nemo Dagger for my son and I. Fits two 25 inch pads perfectly! It’s slightly heavier like you said but it is a comfortable 2 person tent with two large vestibules and 2 doors so it adds a little extra weight. Love the Osmo fly. Water just beads off it and if you look closely and unzip from the top of the fly there are little vent poles to crack an opening. All around great tent.

I have the Nemo Riff sleeping bag. I love not just the gills but the fact it is roomier. I turn all night and this gives me the room to spin like a top and not feel confined like a mummy bag. I don’t like quilts. They are too drafty. I may have to spring for that Helinox chair! Thanks Dan.

I haven't backpacked in a long time. Since my employer of 45 years paid for me to walk around in the woods, walking around in the woods on my time off lost interest. Retired now, and having been thinking about getting back into it after watching "The Codgers" on their current PCT hike, I found this to be an interesting "battle" between you and Becker. Nah. In my youth, I was fine with no chair. As my back aged, I went to a back-support on-ground pad-insert chair. Now that I am in my 60s, a full chair (16 oz with footprint) is essential.

Everytime I think about upgrading to a few 2 person tents (we do a one person and a 3 person as a family), the weights make me stop. It seems unless I pay a TON of money, I am not going to save much weight. My 3 person is 4 lbs 4 ounces packed weight ( and I really love it so that doesn't hurt).

I like how you choose comfort of ultralight, I’m planning to backpack shorter distances (less than 10 miles a day) solo with the Dagger 2P and a 2.5 pound sleeping pad, but everything else as ultralight as possible. Looking forward to your review of the Radix as I’m hoping it’s going to be perfect for those of us who want to go light but not ultralight at the sacrifice of comfort.

The Waymark pack is a lot lighter, but definitely less comfortable. I got a hot spot on my hip from lack of padding and sore shoulders on day two, which doesn't really happen to me on the MR pack. I'm still hoping MR can make a lighter pack cuz that's definitely their drawback. But they win in a landslide for comfort.

I love my Nemo Dagger Osmo. I have a Helinox Chair One and had decided if it ever broke, (it's still going like a champ!) that I'd pick up a Chair Zero, but now I think I'd replace it with the Chair Zero L instead. I'll already be saving some weight but getting a chair that will feel more similar to the Chair One (which I honestly have no complaints about) so thanks for showing that, I didn't even know it existed until now. I guess maybe if one of my kids ends up needing a new chair I could do the whole hand-me-down self-justifying psychology trick on myself too. :D I always enjoy both of your guys' content so thanks for doing it! Which part of the PCT were you on? I live in Oregon and it looks like it was either northern California or Oregon.

I also wondered about the location and I'm in Oregon, too. By the looks of the ground cover and trees (and snow cover in the background and temperature when this was shot in June/July), they're somewhere north of OR Hwy 20 and south of WA Hwy 12, but could be up to I-90. In the final shot there's a mountain profile just above the green slope behind them. The mountain has bare volcanic rock and snow patches that are sloped similarly to a glacier, so from the PCT that says Jefferson, Hood, Adams, Rainier. It could be out of the Columbia Gorge, too. Anyway, fun doing a little local OSINT lol

Thanks for the vids! I often watch you because you always give good, detailed reviews. I've been using a Gossamer Gear Gorilla 50 for a few years and it's still good and going strong. But, I'm wondering if I would be better going the heavier, comfort route as my legs are quite a bit stronger than the shoulders. I'm thinking of going for the Mystery Ranch Bridger 65 after watching your reviews. There are a lot of things that look really good about it. Now that you've been using a few UL packs, where do stand on the weight vs comfort thing? Right now, for a two to three night hike I'm carrying about 13 to 14kg (including food, water etc). Thanks for your advice.

If you're carrying 13 kg or less I think you can enjoy the UL style packs. But that's right at the crossover point where getting a heavier pack that focuses on comfort really starts to pay off. I still love me that Bridger pack and think people would be way more comfortable if they tried it out.

I've lived here and looked out over those mountains for 10 years, and finally I'm getting to go over them. Odd the Nemo tent is 4 pounds. My Nemo 2P dragonfly is only 2.8 pounds all in as trail weight. I have the older version too. I would like to go lighter but like the option to go without the outer shell when the weather is clear. Not copying but I see I have the grayl TI and Vargo bot HD like Eric too. Have had them both for a while and just have to be careful and use a buff as a pre filter on the Grayl to extend the filter life. Cannot backflush it but I find it faster and easier than sawyer or QuickDraw. Those that say the Grayl is heavy have not weighed their sawyer after it has been used and retaining water. I like to cold soak and the Vargo bot is a three in one pot. I can cook with it, cold soak, and it can be a liter sealed water container saving me from having to pack a third water container for those longer days.

I feel like ultralight should take into account, one’s size. I’m 6’9” and not totally out of shape, around 300lbs, so a little heavier than LeBron James. I have to buy everything on the larger end, which means more weight. I really like having a backpacking chair, but a helinox’s weight rating doesn’t cover me… well barely. The Helinox site says 320lb weight capacity, and weighs 2.2 lbs. I ended up purchasing the Onetigris portable camping chair 04, which says it’s got a 660 lb capacity and only weighs .5 lbs more… to make up for the extra weight, I’m saving up for a Durston X-mid pro, but the wife will probably divorce me afterwards, so I’ll be living in that. Hopefully it’s long enough to make the purchase worth while… a puffy is on my list too, but it needs to be extra long and that’s hard to find. Someone could make a ton of money making gear for tall folks. Just saying.

The near zero bundle seems an odd offer. On face value it looks a good deal/idea. But then how many people wanted a full kit on day 1. Most I imagine went with a friend who did cookset and tent. People starting out will also just go to their nearest store than find some niche company online for all in one. Just don't see a market for it even if a kinda neat idea.

Or since it’s assumed that you’ll just be boiling water in it than any viruses/protozoa will be eliminated through boiling

Hey guys, coming from Scotland were it is always raining . What’s with the umbrella?? Iv seen a few state side outdoor tubers using them, can I ask are they very lightweight and do you recommend a manufacturer? It’s funny watching your vids as our kit selection is a lot different but interesting at the same time. The umbrella has become quite popular especially for thru hikers in exposed, desert terrain. So it's more for sun protection than rain really. But of course it works for rain too! The Hyperlite is very light and I like it other than since I do so much camera stuff it gets in the way. But if I wasn't handling cameras all the time I think it would be very ideal. As for the Durston I think it could withstand Scottish weather but it might not be as robust for heavy wind and rain as something like a Hilleberg or a Scandinavian design.

The concept of titanium Grayl is kind of contradictory/weird. Using the "dirty" chamber to cook with even if you get it to boiling seems like it could cause an issue. Like if there's any pathogens or other impurities in the residue, especially at the top inside edge where the boiling water doesn't reach and/or it doesn't otherwise get hot enough.
