Too late for these two. But putting people in jail isn't the answer. The jails are overcrowded as it is, we need to stop putting people in jai for every other thing. @@CrazyDash9 there are lots of quiet zones, but they always have large gates over the road. Every single accident I see on the news is because 1 of 2 things. 1- light is red and stupid parks on the tracks. And 2- the gates go down and stupid drives around them. Safety goes out the window when stupid is driving.

Rick, I live in rural Arkansas and we don't have gates or flashing lights either. A few months ago I was with my sister whom was driving. We looked both ways before crossing the tracks. After crossing, within 10 or 15 seconds, a train came. We were so fortunate to make it over the tracks. The train did not blow a horn nor whistle either.

Years ago, Metra (then C&NW) had a commuter PR program that had a slogan to encourage people to stop trying to beat trains through the crossings, saying, "IF IT'S A TIE, YOU LOSE!". Couldn't be more true than in what we see here.

What kind of measures do the authorities take? In my country, the Netherlands, you can get a fine of 240 euros, about 290 dollars, for crossing a closed railroad crossing. But since some people are not impressed by that, an increase is being discussed. In neighbouring Belgium, you can get a fine of up to 4000 euros, about 4800 dollars! In the meantime, cameras are being installed at railroad crossing to detect people and cars crossing closed railroad crossings. Especially cyclists crossing closed crossings is a problem in our country!

It's a shame that people can't spare 5 or 10 seconds of their life to allow the train to pass. Not only are people in such a hurry that they can't wait for a train, but they do this as well to semi-trucks and they just don't understand that whether you are hit by a train or a truck, the end result and amount of damage is still the same. Don't rush a train or a semi-truck because in the end, you will lose.
