this is probably the hardest i have ever worked on a video that has my face looking towards the camera. i hope you find this genuinely helpful, and if you have any questions or find any inaccuracies please post to the comments. for some reason the thought kept slipping my mind when i was recording, but you will most likely need a Time Base Corrector if you are routing your analog signal to anything that is not a CRT TV or a VCR. Because TBCs are getting increasingly rare to find, you might be better off getting a video mixer (which more or less have TBCs built-in). Big Pauper, another prominent glitch artist that has been around in the scene for well over a decade and also modifies video circuits, has some good thoughts on which mixers have good TBC abilities: glitchart.com/glitch-art-video-production/ *** On second thought, TBCs are only really needed if you're deliberately distorting your analog video signals with circuit bent gear. I had a cheap AV to HDMI and a capture card that used to pick up the glitches and FF's/Rewinds but it broke. When I bought a new AV to HDMI it no longer works and I get a blue screen. I got another one and same thing. I dont want to buy a TBC because ive done it without it, but I dont know how or why my new AV to HDMI gives be a blue screen

If you want to upload footage on KZbin, scale it up to 4K, even if you recorded it on HD - KZbin allows a higher bitrate on 4K (44-56 Mbit/s) as on HD (10Mbit/s). You can get way more details with this one, very nice with CRT stuff ;). As a filmmaker I can also recomment to setup the shutter to the number which is double the framerate, with this setting the motion looks natural. (Or you can just use 180 degree, if you have a camera which allows it) But you have to be lucky to get away from scanlines this way, depends on which CRT you're using. Keep on producing great stuff like this, very informative ;)

Thanks for watching! and yes sometimes I upload my analog videos in 1440p, but I haven't tried 4k though, I would guess it's probably a very dimished return by that point. And yeah I am also aware of shutter speed generally needing to be at least twice as fast as the video's FPS, but in this case when I'm just recording a screen, 1/60 shutter speed and 60fps works fine, I haven't noticed much of a difference from 30fps. I can't go faster than 1/60 shutter speed when doing rescans since it will cause scanning issues.

Thank you so much for sharing this video and all your other guides! Photography is my background and I’ve been trying to learn more about analogue glitching. I’ve experimented with data bending with images using Audacity. I’ve also tried experimenting with replicating the results in photoshop but the level of control makes it hard to replicate the results exactly with out make a bunch of adjustment. I recently bought the Elgato Cam Link 4K to try to capture the output of my video glitcher, but I have to use one of those AV2HDMI things before to convert the analog signal and connect to Elgato through HDMI. However I can barely see the output in OBS, it's coming out black most of the time. I assume it's because of the conversion those AV2HDMI devices do, and detect the intentional glitch as an unwanted signal. Is there anything else I can try to capture this in a better way? I have one of those USB dongles (that work) but I would like to improve my setup

Nevermind I figured out the issue. I had the Cam Link plugged through a USB hub instead of directly through a USB 3.0 motherboard input. Seems to work great so far. Thanks for the amazing video btw.

well u will need an upscaler regardless to convert analog to digital, u cant use a camlink by itself. widescreen 16:9 only comes in at the software side, u will need to stretch, or some digital monitors and capture things do it automatically

This is a fantastic video Michael - just echoing the appreciation others have for putting in the time to make something so comprehensive! I might have a few (anecdotal) tips as well - When it comes to CRTs the struggle to avoid moire is real. I went back and forth between shooting in 4k and 1080p and found that the higher pixel count of 4k would always introduce more moire, which makes sense. If you shoot in 4k and want to scale/crop/downres in post, it can even make the issue worse depending on the interpolation method your editing software uses when scaling. It might also look fine while editing, but it's going to get exacerbated once scaled on different platforms. Fewer pixels from the get go can be advantageous for this specific issue depending on your end goal, but one of the biggest things that can help negate moire is your aperture and focus while shooting. A shallow depth of field at faster apertures makes the issue a lot worse, as does being perfectly in focus. I started getting better results when I would push the aperture down to maybe F8-10 or so, get things perfectly in focus, and then manually defocus a little bit (usually closer, not further). There's a sweet spot between being overrun with moire and being too out of focus. If at all possible the best way to find that sweet spot is to monitor your feed in a piece of software (+1 for OBS) where you can scale it up and down easily in real-time, as it might not be apparent until it's being scaled. Just watch for when the moire becomes manageable at different scaling while you make tiny focal adjustments. You're right on the money as far as the shutter speed goes. Even at 1/60 though, I often run into a very slow moving single scanline which seems unavoidable due to slight desync - but it will move depending on the angle you're shooting the screen at (esp. if the screen is curved). If it's not a long shoot you can usually wait a bit for that line to get out of the way and shoot before it comes back, or shoot the screen at a slightly different angle. I think FPS ends up as more of a preference thing depending on what you're shooting. I try to stick to 60 when possible just so the options are there in post, but more filmic stuff will always look more natural at 30 or 24. As far as capture cards, I've been fairly happy with the composite capture dongle El Gato makes because you aren't stuck with their godawful capture software; it works with most other software right out of the gate. If the final goal for a piece involves post production I might actually recommend skipping the composite>HDMI portion and capturing the composite signal at the native 480p resolution. This gives you total control over the up-scaling process in post while certain converters/upscalers will do some wonky stuff in the switchover. As far as software upscaling goes, Premiere does some pretty awful pixel interpolation in that process and there aren't any ways to change the method it uses (to my knowledge?). I get lazy and still end up using it a lot, but in something like After Effects you can set a layer to "draft" quality/sampling and it will act like nearest-neighbor sampling does in Photoshop. That means upscaling the video will keep pixels 1:1 as long as you scale to a multiple of the original resolution. Same goes for software like Touchdesigner, just making sure your processing chain is all set to Nearest Pixel. Totally dependent on what you're working with though - glitchy visual FX might not benefit from this sort of nit-picking the way video synthesis does. Like you said though, there are definitely no wrong ways to do this stuff and it's all about what works and what you like. More often than not the weird quirks that appear with a certain process are what make it look the coolest, I'm pretty fond of the slight colorshifting/rainbow shimmering that happens when shooting some projectors. Anywho I'm definitely still learning in this area, but I hope some of this is helpful!

As far as upscalers go, yeah, it's totally optional, and every device seems to work a little differently it'd be hard to cover them all. That's why I talk about the general process, and warn people it could be something requiring a lot of experiments, and purchases haha. Love your creations, and art!

Excellent video video and good information 👍👍 regarding the scrolling black bars in CRTs, an old video guy told me simply match the shutter speed of the camera to the refresh rate or Hertz of the CRT monitor👍 for instance a 60hz monitor can be captured with a 1/60 shutter speed.

Cool vid. I love the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle but it came with a sharp learning curve. I can now playback from Premiere Pro timeline via the Shuttle and onto CRT and multiple VCRs for bulk vhs tape dubbing. It also works the other way around to capture into a timeline, but always takes some configuring

great video, i'm surprised thugh you didnt mention capture devices like the canopus grass valley using firewire import. probably one of the more esoteric methods but my personal favorite for direct capture. mentioning projection method is cool no one talks about that. cheers!

you need your fps to match the refresh rate, so ntsc & 60fps is a match for it's 30 fps & interlacing. PAL users, record off the screen at 25 or 50fps

This is how to destroy your tv from the inside while attempting to get similar effects that a circuit bent pedal or rack will do, it will create very subtle effects at the cost of likely obliterating/maybe erasing memory on the tv it could also cause it to shut off I wouldnt recommend unless you wanna murder your crt in .2 seconds. Different story when it comes to magnets and vcrs but again its a gamble and will destroy yo shit

about to jump in have been capturing a bunch of old analog content.have an svideo splitter that i plan on putting into a crt with one signal being from a svhs deck the other will be a feedback loop with crt from an svhs cam. i imagine that i will get an echo effect of the video thats playing off the deck. if that works out i will try to get the signal coming into davinchi resolve live and mess with it more.

Seems like no matter what, if you have a lot of movement or detail.. KZbin, FB and IG compression will destroy it

IG is tough, and I don't know much about FB but I'm sure the same applies to what I'm about write: on KZbin there is a trick where, say you captured your analog video at 1080p or 720p in OBS, you can re-export the capture from a video editor at 1440p, so that way when you upload it at that res and it's played back on people's screens at 1440p, the details will be better preserved, especially if the viewer has a 1080px screen. Fast moving and busy visuals are always going to destroyed by compression regardless, since the bitrates these websites compress videos down to simply can't preserve that level of detail - except for Vimeo, which is why lots of artists in general upload stuff there for their portfolios. Only thing you can really do is to upload high bitrate videos in the hopes that the compression algorithm will at least consider saving some details.

One trick I've come across is not letting the platform handle a bulk of the compression. Uploading a near lossless render to KZbin will always look 10x worse than something you've encoded with a bit of compression already. But like Yovozol said, a lot of it's just unavoidable :/

Id love to see a video about realtime glitching. For example, taking a GoPro straight into a glitching machine and/or a computer and showing how this can be achieved. I do a lot of live-streaming with multiple GoPros going into a video switcher, but I would like to have some realtime effects happening that can also be audio reactive. Are there any capture devices that will make the colors look as vivid as they do when watching the tape on a CRT? I'm considering going with a DSLR and filming the TV but thats a lot of investment and I know nothing about cameras.

i am not sure but u can always bump up saturation in post regardless of capture method. side note, im routinely shocked how many people say they want to do stuff with analog video but also say they know nothing about cameras and editing. i doubt that analog video hardware is the best place to start if you're in that boat.

Back in the day, lots of tape based video cameras had video line in, enabling source recording. Are there any models of older SD card or hard drive based cameras with this feature ?? I realise that there are some drone video recorder options that have source line in to record the transmitted video.

Yea they do exist, I have one. As soon as the video signal gets even slightly out of whack the thing stops recording so it’s a bit useless. As far as drone recorders go, they are a lot more fault tolerant because they are designed for the drone flying at the edges of the broadcast range, but there are also a lot of bad quality ones out there. Have a look at the ImmersionRC PowerPlay for an example of a good one, though I’ve not tried recording glitchy video with it. Perhaps I should test that…

I love that this video and scene exists. Just as I discovered this type of video art, a crtv magically plopped its way into my life. I’m still a bit confused about the projector method, as this is the current method I am most interested in. Where are the visuals coming from on the projector? Is the camcorder plugged into the projector and then filming the wall, thus creating the same effect as if it was filming a tv?

I have a CERRXIAN FireWire IEEE 1394 Type A 400 6 Pin Female to 1394 Type B 800 9 Pin Male Data Transfer Adapter Converte connected to a APPLE Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter and it makes the Box turn on and everything so it’s giving it power right ? My question is...why won’t the program show up It says in the manual that I don’t have to install anything.

I wish I found this video like two years ago through trail and error, I've tried, failed and succeeded at all of these methods 😅 just wanted to comment to say anyone thinking of buying the black magic intensity shuttle assuming, more expensive must be better, it's really not. I couldn't get it to work with anything, the camera settings have to be exact to the awkward software to have to use and any dodgy analogue signal it just doesn't understand, and obs also struggles. Just a tip for anyone thinking about it, I've wasted my money there 🤷

@@YOVOZOL it definitely does. Might drop the signal occasionally but looks great. Direct to OBS was hardly working, especially without any TBC to stabilize the signal. Will try recording to VHS first before uploading to OBS! Thanks for all the info, you’re a legend.
