Finishing seams is an important step in the process of making garments or other fabric-based items. Here are three examples of why finishing seams is important:
Pinking: Pinking is a method of finishing seams by cutting the fabric with pinking shears, which create a zigzag edge. This prevents the fabric from fraying and unravelling over time. Pinking is a quick and easy way to finish seams and is particularly useful for lightweight or delicate fabrics that might be damaged by other methods of finishing. It is also a good choice when working with curved seams, as it allows the fabric to maintain its shape without adding bulk.
Zigzag stitch: Another method of finishing seams is to use a zigzag stitch on a sewing machine. This creates a finished edge that helps to prevent fraying and unravelling, while also providing some additional strength to the seam. Zigzag stitching is a good choice for medium-weight fabrics and can be used for both straight and curved seams.
Clean finish: A clean finish involves pressing the seam allowances open, folding them in, and then stitching them down with a straight stitch. This creates a neat, professional-looking finish that is particularly useful for garments or other items that will be visible on the inside. Clean finishing can also add some additional strength to the seam, but it is particularly useful if you are not lining your garment.
Overall, finishing seams is an important step in the process of creating high-quality, durable garments or other fabric-based items. By preventing fraying and unravelling, finishing seams can help to ensure that your creations look great and last a long time.

Number 3 was my favorite! I am so new at sewing, and I heard pinking doesn’t hold up to heavy washing… but number 3 looked BEAUTIFUL! 😍
