A bonus video to the Artichoke grow challenge video series! 3 easy steps to protect your artichoke plants against winter weather. Since artichokes are perennial they can come back year after year. But in zones 6 and above, you may experience colder temps that could kill them off without proper protection.

We are in Oklahoma and we get hard freezes. Just had one I didn’t know this yet. Hope it survives. I need to go prune them now. Was 17 degrees last night. 😮

Might still be ok with just the one freeze, although 17 is pretty cold! Mine started growing back within a few days of me pruning them because we had a warm spell for a couple of weeks. I pruned them again yesterday and put more mulch on top since we are supposed to be in the 20s here at night for the next couple of weeks.

I think as long as the root base is protected, they should be ok.

I've really enjoyed your artichoke series. I've been trying unsuccessfully to grow artichokes off and on for 20 years and in multiple states. This year I am determined, it's my year!! I currently already have a dozen green globe starting their 4th set of true leaves. They'll be going out to the garage under lights to start vernalization soon. I'm zone 6a and am not playing around! I just started my Imperial Star and Colorado Star seeds as I'm told (directly by the developer of them) that they require little to no vernalizing but I'm giving them some time to in cooler Ohio spring air anyway. Did I mention I'm not playing around with the chokes this year? Looking forward to an update and seeing how yours over-wintered.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed them! That's great you have yours started already. My Colorado Red Star didn't end up surviving, I think due to the high heat and humidity we had here for almost the whole summer. But the green globe and Provence did make it and I had to end up pruning them down twice, so hopefully they make it through the winter and pop up in the spring. I'll definitely do more updates if they do (or at least one more if they don't). Best of luck with yours!

Great video. I pibe in AZ and winter is mild with few freezing nights but we can grow artichokes here. Should I water over the winter?
@oneseedoneworld
@oneseedoneworld 10 ай бұрын
Right before frost, you can cut them down to the crown for overwintering, and then you only need to water them about once a month over winter.

Thanks good video, many of the others I tried explained but didn't show. I see that you cut them back while they are green that was the part I was looking for. We already had some frosts but they are still healthy. Can you use the leaves in addition to mulch (mixed together)?
@oneseedoneworld
@oneseedoneworld Жыл бұрын
I don't see why not as long as the leaves were healthy. One thing I've run into is that I had another warm spell, so my plants that I pruned back started growing again and popped up through the mulch. So more than one pruning may be necessary 🙂

Artichoke leaves make excellent mulch! Go for it!🤗 The plant leaves I mean lol ... I highly suggest eating the bud leaves dipped in butter! 😋

@@oneseedoneworld I have them in bags. I live in pa so I plan on bringing them in for the winter. I guess I'll just cut them down and mulch and leave them in a spare room I have and see if they come back next year. Thank you

Hi I am in the UK and have grown my artichokes from seed in pots. They are doing well in their pots . Should i bring them in in the winter and just leave them as they are or cut them down. Any advice greatly received..

I haven't done it myself, but from what I have read on the subject: "To overwinter containerized artichoke plants, cut the plants down to the crown when the danger of frost threatens. Then, move the plants indoors and water them every four to six weeks until spring’s arrival. They’ll shift into dormancy and can be moved back outdoors when the danger of frost has passed the following spring." That is from Hobbyfarms.com I may try it myself next year.

My artichokes are getting established, however im only getting small artichokes? I leave 1 flower to seed in hopes of getting more artichokes, hasn't happened yet, 2 yrs now.
@oneseedoneworld
@oneseedoneworld Жыл бұрын
Could be a moisture issue. Artichokes are sensitive when it comes to too much or too little water. If you have had periods of drought it can result in smaller artichokes. They also need plenty of room to grow (3 to 4 feet around for each plant) and are heavy feeders, so they need a monthly dose of organic fertilizer or compost.

@One Seed, One World Ah, maybe not enough water, I just started fertilizing every month this year(don't normally) The permanent 1 has a big location to grow, I do have some in large containers, no artichokes as of yet, big foliage Thank you, I'll water more deeply.
