I love stuffed artichokes! The Italian way, steamed with Italian bread crumbs, garlic and Parmesan cheese with a slice of lemon on top. I have no recipe, just memories of Grandma teaching me. 😊 Don’t let it go to flower if you want to stuff it. Clip the thorny parts off the ends of the leaves. Thank you so much for this information, yours look fantastic!

Hey Deanne, search the video on here (cuz KZbin might remove my link) “Great Depression Cooking” stuffed artichoke. It will melt your heart. The video is a woman named Clara who is Italian and was in her 90s when she made the video (she’s since passed) and her videos are so beautiful :) I think you’ll like it, it’s this exact recipe. They are recipes she used to survive the Great Depression along with stories as she makes it ❤️

@@pie746 That was so sweet! I don’t put salt or pepper. Yes that’s how to cut the leaves and stem. I cut the top too. I mix up the stuffing with about a half cup ish of olive oil and real minced garlic. If you put too much olive oil it overpowers it. Then if it’s still too dry I add enough water to make it moist but not wet. Then I stuff the leaves with the spoon, sprinkle parm cheese and top with a slice of lemon. I only put enough water in the bottom of the pot to cover the stem and maybe the bottom row of leaves. Sometimes I’ll add garlic and lemon to the water. Just keep checking the water doesn’t steam all out or it’ll scorch. You know it’s done when you can easily pull off one of the bottom leaves. When you get to the heart at the bottom be sure and pull off or scrape off the choke part… the part that looks like hair. The rest is all heart to eat. Mmm mmm mmm so good!! I use to go to the Italian festival and buy like a dozen and freeze them… along with a couple of muffellatas, big round Italian sandwiches. Ok now I’m going to have to cook all this lol. 💜

I found one year by accident (well, actually from being lazy) by leaving some plants right up next to the house that they overwintered. It was some random peppers and annual flowers in planters. They got heat from the house via poor insulation or maybe the sun baking the bricks. They also sort of self mulched with leaves that blew against the house naturally. I've since adapted this process to keep some tender perennials that would otherwise be a zone or two too high for me (VA zone 7) without needing a greenhouse or taking up space indoors over the winter.

I'm in Zone 7 too, and I've been pleasantly surprised by how well some stuff in the ground next to the house has done. Not removing all the old/death branches from the plant seems to help too. I'll have to try putting a pepper plant right up against the house this year.

What I have found with artichokes is that they really enjoy being on the osmosis setting of your garden hose once they are set out. If you think about it, most artichokes are grown in California and there they have the strata coming off the oceans bathing them for hours per day through the Spring and Summer. I do this by using that setting on my watering wand or sprayer in the early morning. They love it and I have experienced artichokes that overwintered in zone 5a/5b in Cheyenne WY. It depends on the location you have them, they prefer South facing, and you need to deep mulch them like strawberries through the winter.

I started my artichokes indoors on 1/17. I have been putting them outside for about 2 weeks, bringing them inside if the temps go down to freezing. I am hoping I can get these to grow b/c I LOVE artichokes. Following your directions thus far. I do have a couple that I think were too close to the grow light and got scorched. I didn't get a chance to put the seeds in the fridge like you recommended in your January video, but I got good germination anyway. Fingers crossed. Thanks for these tutorials.

I'm in zone 8a and I've found that direct seeded artichokes do not like too much sun/heat. The second time I tried growing them, so as to make sure they would go through the 400 hour vernalization process and I would get fruit the first year. I decided to direct seed them in a place where they would not get the late afternoon summer sun. As an experiment, since the seed packet said they were hardy to 10 degrees, I decided to direct seed them late in the fall in a raised bed, I planted one in late November and one in December and placed humidity domes over them. After the initial watering, I watered around the outside of the domes. I haven't babied them at all. Except for some worm castings when I planted the seeds, they've just gotten rain water that I collect They made it through the coldest days/nights and are about 8 inches tall now and have out grown the domes. Time will tell if they fruit this spring and if they behave like a perennial ( like they are supposed to) here.

FYI, I live in zone 6b, and the internet says our average low temps are -5 to +5 degrees. I've lived here nearly thirty years, and I don't remember getting below zero at all; maybe once. There was one brutally cold year where in early January the temp every morning was around 15 degrees. So I don't know where they get their info from. I live in West Orange, NJ. No zero temps; certainly nothing below zero. Maybe once in nearly 30 years.

So oddly we got 2 inches of snow first so that will help insulate my sprouted cold weather crops. That was actually the best scenario snow and then the deep cold. Last year I discovered that if you start your plants under T5 HO bulbs you can skip the garden off period. The light is so intense that the plants don't seem to notice when you just put them outside.

I would like to know how you did the WS with artichokes. I am doing the No Transplant Winter Sowing for my garden. Did you refrigerate them first? What zone are you in? Are you in Sheryl Mann's FB group?

This year I did not have any luck😕 I don’t know what happened….I’m in 6b. I probably should have kept them on my unheated porch but I put them outside and took off the lids. I think my WS worked much better with lids on…this year the soil was soaked, and I put a lot of holes in the bottom. It’s a little disappointing but I’ll try again. I was able to get some spinach, coneflower’s, and some pollinator blend seeds to grow. Good luck to you!

Hi Gary, I was wondering when a person could start tomatoes and peppers in a 8x10 hoop house? I'm in zone 6a.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

Depends on frost. If the HH isn't getting frost now, you can. That is the goal. You want them to go in the ground about 6-8 weeks or so, so time them that way. If they are staying in the hoop house, no frost is the key. What if you don't mind that they won't bud out this year? Can I start some seeds now and grow them to about six inches and put them in the ground so they will be a good size and overwinter them? They are a beautiful plant even if they won't have a flower this season.

I'm in the same zone as you are, I didn't see a video of yours for how you winterize these. If you have one can you post a link? Otherwise my main questions when would you cut them back (mine are still growing a/o 10/30)? at groundlevel? and cover them with just mulch?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN Жыл бұрын
They can survive here 50/50. But I cut them back and mulch them around this month. A good 6 inches of leaves helps give them a better chance. Move the leaves mid March. Grammar check (sorry, I can't help myself. Drives me NUTS!) The variety (that we're going to be growing) IS (not are) green globe.... "Variety is green globe".... Where did you get any reason to go plural? The predicate of a sentence agrees in number with the SUBJECT (in this case, "variety"), not the object. I think in this case you were thinking about what might have been the object, "artichokes." Perhaps you were thinking, "The variety (that we're going to be growing) is/are green globe artichokes. But the predicate is "is", either way. "Variety is," not "variety are." Doesn't matter what the object is, doesn't matter what the nearest noun is. And you'll never see this. Alas.

I apologize, I am a grammar fanatic, having been a member of the last generation to whom they bothered to teach English grammar. The variety you've chosen to grow IS, not ARE, no matter how many are in the object of the sentence. Predicates, or verbs, or action words, agree with the subject of a sentence, not with the object, and not with the nearest noun, no matter how plural it is. You said, "the variety we're going to be growing are green globe..." No, no, no, no, no. The variety (singular) you are going to be growing IS, not are, IS green globe. Variety is, not variety are. Please. I beg you.

Language is constantly in flux. No serious grammarian corrects a casual youtube video. You're probably a person who got corrected too strictly by your teacher and now you think that paying that forward is somehow a virtue. "Last generation that..." get over yourself. What a bore you must be.
