5:20 I think unless you’re doing a wireless mic setup, dynamic microphones don’t have batteries and are passive. On the contrary, they also do not require phantom power, unlike condenser microphones which typically do.
@AdamTanPercussion4 жыл бұрын
Ah yes you are right! I meant to say that dynamics didn't need power but me saying they use batteries is not 100% accurate haha. That's what happens when all the dynamics in my house are wired karaoke mics for my parents with batteries in them 😂

YESSS this is exactly what I needed, I finally have my own board, and I'm dropping some money on a DAC and mics.
@AdamTanPercussion4 жыл бұрын
Congratulations!! Yes you definitely need a recording setup now :)
@ChristianRivera224 жыл бұрын
I'm definitely going to record now! For a future technique talk, maybe you can talk about the location of the recording, you know, taking advantage of natural cathedrals' reverb, drum rooms, studios (like yours), etc... Thanks for the useful guide Adam!
@joeberibak2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Adam! This led me to the resources I needed to get my recording to stop sounding so washy. Using compression effectively and reducing the EQing/reverb brought so much more clarity to the sound. The recording sounds much more like it does in the room now.

Video idea: explain how to safely transport instruments. How to break down, build up, load into a car effectively, annoying vibe pedals, bars, etc. Many people have to take home school owned instruments right now and it would suck if something gets damaged and you have to pay a crap ton of money for a broken rosewood bar or snare head.
@AdamTanPercussion4 жыл бұрын
This is a cool idea! I wish I was more of an expert in this... I've always been a "get thick cases, hire a bigger vehicle and tie it up way more than you need to" kind of person 👀

So I was watching this video and liked what I saw. In your other videos, such as your performance of "Sunflower" I see you're using the C-2's to record. Are those the only mics you used? Did you use any other mics to capture the bass notes? If not, did you boost the bass in edit? I know you mentioned not doing that too much, but hinted at the fact that you might a bit. Just curious as I am looking to begin recording and am on a strict budget. So if I can get the same sound quality (or close to it) with just the C-'s that would be awesome!

Hey Adam! Thanks for a great tutorial on how to record marimba. Quick question-what mic are you using for your "talking head" shots and voice-overs?
@cerdmist4 жыл бұрын
This comes just on the right time! just got my first 5 octave marimba and I want to start recording myself! Wondering if you've ever tried large condenser mics before as I'm more inclined to the warmth and character of large condensers
@AdamTanPercussion4 жыл бұрын
I have tried them before! Definitely worth a shot too if your budget can allow it 😬 although I would not say it's an immediate night and day difference

Hey Adam! Do these microphones also work on other percussion equipment or are the microphones that you have specifically for marimba?
@AdamTanPercussion2 жыл бұрын
They do work well for other equipment yes! Although if you are specifically looking for large drums to be miced e.g. bass drum, kick drum, or things with lower spectrum sounds like large tam tam, you'd get a better result with a large diaphragm mic

Please I need help, are that condenser mics versatile to record also a snare drum (or other percussion instruments)?

So i "work" as a sound engineer for a high school band and i can never figure out for a outside setting what is the best way to capture sound i dont know if i should do place the mic under the board or over the board like you do. Help would be nice
@AdamTanPercussion4 жыл бұрын
I would say over the board would always be more correct than under as the majority of sound comes from the resonators which point upwards 😬 I know some people put larger mics under the instrument for bass or if they intentionally want a muffled sound, but that's about it really.
@jacobkochperc4 жыл бұрын
If you have to be mobile (like front ensembles need to be), you can zip tie your mics to the frame beneath the boards. Not ideal sound, but out of necessity, that what the “pros” do! I’ve never seen anything else but I wonder at the possibilities If you didn’t have this already, you’ll need establish protocols for the students to effectively and quickly hook up all the cables to the mics and your synth cart or iPad
