I would suggest having a vertical antenna also. You never know, sometimes vertical antenna will outperform horizontal in skip. The polarities get reversed multiple times on skip hops. It's best to have both types of antennas that way you have both options covered.
@MowerJunkie3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I have a very nice vertical setup on My house. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
@americaswayout44893 жыл бұрын
Something seldom talked about, in a skip a signal is most likely to become circular, not vertical or horizontal. Local communications are better served by a vertical because of mobiles being vertical. A flat beam is most likely just quieter than a vertical because manmade noise is most often vertical. I ran a moonraker for many years and found little difference in either polarity. If speaking to your spouse is your preference is most important while one is mobile then set your beam that way. I also had a low mounted 3 element much like yours and I built a wooden hinge with ROPE so it could be changed easily and sometimes a weak skip signal did seem to sometimes pickup with the beam being changed. You will enjoy being able to turn away from stations bleeding over or from noise plus the probability of at least 8 dbd of gain.
@MrJaz80883 жыл бұрын
A vertical on top of a Beam/Yagi becomes ever so slightly directional based on the Yagi, Test it and you will see you have a Directional Vertical, which makes a difference
@n5ifi2 жыл бұрын
A cheaper solution to this (and another video lol) would be to install this antenna at a 45 deg angle (slant polarization) There is only a 3db hit between strictly horizontal and vertical signals and you cover both radiation angles at the same time. Like was stated above many times multiple hops come in at different polarization angles anyway and slant polarization is known to be more consistent overall (less fading). 73 from Arkansas de Dispatcher Hot Springs

An old trick is to use the rotor you currently are using for Azimuth readings, (North, East....etc. ), and place it on your boom ! This will give you the option of going horizontal to vertical polarization ! Then replace your, " Flip- Flop " rotor with one for Azimuth rotation ! Too, this gives you an option to play with different angles with your Beam ! Just something to think about ! 🤔....?

Mower Junkie, you should have tried that rotor and used it to switch between horizontal and vertical. Then used another rotor to turn the mast pipe. The M103 is a great antenna and also the Shooting Star is as well. Many people stack two M103's to get better forward gain and better rear blocking.

Why would you want to go off-band? Channel 55 would be 27555, is that right? In Britain we have 2 sets of channels (the old British FM channels from 27.60125 to 27.99125, and the EU/US channels for AM/FM/SSB). Anyway I heard that 27555 is an international DX calling channel. I haven't used CB since the 80s and back then we only had the 40FM channels so all this new stuff and the idea of going off-band is a total mystery to me‼️🤪

The only time polarity really matters on CB is talking local. Put the beam up vertical and then you can use it local or skip, your polarity changes when working skip anyway. Most CBers run verticals for local work so the beam would suffer a 30db disadvantage locally to others vertically polarized.

This antenna works excellent in Vertical Polarization also but would need to be mounted higher to use it for ground wave communications. Say around 50 to 100 foot in the air. I have used it vertical with a 10 foot tripod and a 30 foot telescoping mast installed in the 10 foot tripod it worked very well when the other station had the same setup and we pointed the antennas at each others locations. Very little issues with mean people trying to mess with us on channels then keying up. LOL

I have used that antenna before you can purchase 5,000 and 10,000 watt gama matches for the antenna. I had mine horizontal at only 20 foot off the ground and it worked perfect for trans equatorial propagation to the south. Worked many South American and West indies stations with the antenna and with the antenna mounted low to the ground there is very little ground wave propagation over a long distance. Could receive signals before others in the area as the band opened up and could work stations longer after the band had closed for others in the area where I was located.

MJ, you are going to lose that antenna if you don't guy wire that set-up better. Lose the pole under the antenna and the rotor - it is an Ad-hoc lever to the wind loading of total antenna system: never do that to a Yagi! Put the antenna just off the top of the rotor with a stubby pole. Guy wire the antenna mast in-between the two rotor clamps - the rotor weight's more that antenna - and that rotor is a beast! But, you need to consider the wind loading of both the mast and rotor for your guy wire needs. Look, I live in Charlotte, NC and I will be more than happy to come down and share with you what I know. I'll bring my bag of tricks too! Just reach out, KG4QWL
