No, it's not failing infrastructure. It's the force and direction and height of the swells. The pier usually doesn't take hits from the side. It's meant to head into the swells. Storms way out in the ocean can produce some terrifying swells. Glad everyone's okay. What a loss. Santa Cruz has taken some heavy hits from natural disasters. Strong community. 💜

Yeah I ride my bike over there all the time and that entire section was dilapidated and fenced off. the entire structure had dropped 2-3 feet in the calm summer time and the restaurant was condemned for a while. either the pylons deteriorated or the sub marine soil had eroded underneath it. but that scares me for the rest of the wharf.

Salt pickles wood and preserves it. Ask any wooden boat owner in the Pacific Northwest. The hull, always submerged in the ocean water, last many decades or even a century or more. Above the waterline, where the copious amount of freshwater rains over it, is where the rot happens, and needs repair or replacement in a much shorter time.

Both things are true. The structure needed repairs, and local waves are getting higher/stronger. Part of the reason it was in disrepair was from extreme weather in recent years.

Santa Cruz holds a special place in my heart. Growing up there, I have fond memories of fishing on the Wharf as a kid and, later, busking as an adult, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, delicious restaurants, and stunning views. One moment that stands out is from the winter of '62 when I saw a large sailboat washed ashore on the beach nearby. It was a powerful reminder of the beauty and might of nature-a lesson Santa Cruz has always been good at teaching.
