Back in the early '80s, I would pay good money for drum lessons and most of the time spent was learning rudiments . Not many teachers spent time breaking down songs we all wanted to learn. To young drummers out there.. Be thankful you have YT and really great teachers willing to show you how. I had to figure it out for myself..

As always, Chris, you break things down so well -- into the "learning order" -- and your production standards are wonderful. It makes it a doable and enjoyable process. Extra points for your vocalization on "Kashmir."

I saw one of those kits at a G.C a couple years ago. I couldnt believe how good that kit sounded. The bass drum was perfect. Super boomy and didnt have that wonky sound that is usually e.q 'd out with a sound system. It already sounded great the way it was.

While I know most professional drummers would disagree, I feel Richard D. James is by far one of the BEST drummers on the planet,... point being, a completely untapped area of study on KZbin is how to ACTUALLY make Richard D. James's style of drums... Which i commonly referred to as Break Core... Not even Point Blank has a course on how to write Break core... And it also uses complex Time Signatures similar to Kashmir.... Which I would argue was not explained correctly in terms of the phrasing, though you did count it correctly and to follow your example would 100% return the desired result, but I feel explaining the Time Signature correctly and not just mimicking the pattern with attention to downbeat would be more helpful, at least for trying to write out the pattern and not just play it... You can only always feel the resolution when playing it, but understanding it is a whole different ball game. And while Google seems to completely disagree on what the time signature of Kashmir is, if you look at the sheet music, is is very obviously is a 12/8, and I would argue that it resolves into 8/4 by adding a somewhat erroneous extra bar for dramatic effect... Which is arguably rather difficult to transcribe, since it is something that HAS to felt. Of course I had Time Signatures explained to me 1000 times and it wasn't until I transcribed Monkey drummer in a 4/4 that I understood how to apply Time signature changes correctly... And it was explained to me 1000 time incorrectly as it turns out, whether by expert, professional, or college professor (at least in the US) the correct usage of Time Signature changes is seemingly not understood by anyone... Except by Richard D. James, who programmed his own drums instead of playing them. Which is why I feel he is the BEST Drummer on the planet... Him and Mangini ;D..

respect your teaching and admiration of Bonham as a great innivative rock drummer.... but...you can bet with his natural talent he got on the kit and did what came to him as an artist, without so much thought put into it....the mark of a true artist on canvas. .You cant learn that but you can imitate it. Rather than copying an idol, I found it much more satisfying creating my own style combining my own natural talents with some of the learned basics from my idols. I suggest you all do the same. Maybe someday newbies will be imitaing you.....Good luck

While I agree with this post, don't neglect the craft and perspiration of the "natural artist". I can imagine Bomham playing iteration after iteration for hours on end until he got the perfect feel.

I really like your breakdown of those beats, very understandable. Have you ever done Four Sticks? I have worked on that beat on and off and it never sounds right, I'm definitely missing the boat somewhere.

Ooh I luv that one. I don’t know the sticking pattern exactly but it’s def in 5 (5/4). Verses and breaks/bridges are all over the place! It’s so interesting.

How does your drum sound so good? Could you give tips on you tune them?

My friends at Art of Drumming basically put the kit out of the box and it sounded great with the stock heads on it. The PDP in those sizes is a great kit. Regarding your question I think the right Mic placement and choice of drum mics has a lot to do with the sound you‘re hearing.

Hi Diego. The Artist is called Justin Timberlake. Song: Cry Me A River. The Kashmir riff is only part of the live arrangement - it’s not on the studio version I think. DM me (link in the Description) if you need the link to that video. Greetings to Argentina 🥁🙏🏼

Kashmir: just count in 3/4, so you can just follow the guitar riff and melody of the lead vocal... Bonham is the only one who's playing as if it was 4/4, but actually 4x 3/4 so a logic scale . First measure 8th notes hi-hat, bass 1 and 3, snare on 2. Second measure snare 1 and 3, bass on 2......just play in 2 phrases of 2 3/4 measures, chords and vocals are doing/moving the same...

This was great! You guys have got to do a breakdown on Dave Abbruzzese, one of Pearl Jam's drummers before Matt Cameron. He played on Vs. and Vitalogy. Dude had insane groove on the hi hat and snare and loved to use his cymbals- I want to play like him someday!

@@ChrisHoffmannTube heck yeah! Vs. might be most representative LP of his drumming, but his best drumming performance is arguably their MTV Unplugged show...if you wanna make this video happen, lol!

Why spend $3,000 on a DW when that PDP sounds fantastic and is probably under $1,000.

@@davidwinthrop7077 my 7-piece Gretsch Catalina Maple ($1,300) sounds fantastic and I barely have to tune it once a year. The same amount of shells and hardware in DW World would be at least $5,000.
