Saw Patton and clicked as fast as I could! "Spoonful Blues" has been a favourite of mine since I was a teen. Always play it when I can be bothered to tune to open "E" and get the slide out! lol

Thank you for this lesson. Patton was related to the Chatmon family of the Mississippi Sheiks fame. That whole family was steeped in talent and influenced the entire region. If you suss it out you can draw a direct line from Patton to Wolf/Muddy to Clapton/Richards to EVH to everyone since. It all goes back to Patton; who was trying to sound like the blues divas from the 20’s out of tin pan alley.

Hey John, capo aside, would you say this is in the key of E? I tend to get confused with the intro part going from the 7th/8th fret to 5th/4th and whether that's in E or A? Both scales share similar notes!

John performs it in Standard tuning, pitched at F#. Standard tuning just specifys intervals between the 6th-1st strings. You can pitch it wherever you want, it's still standard tuning. Yes you can play it exactly as he has, and without capo, and it'd be in E.

Once you clamp the capo on, the frets are relative to the capo. If he says 8th fret, he means 8 from the capo, not the nut. This is a major key song that Patton played in standard tuning. No key changes. If you play it in E standard for example, the licks will all be in E.

I'll have to find someone else you're just too far advanced for me. I'm crippled in my left hand I'm not real good at fingerpicking. I need a course from starting blues to Blue's lead using a pick
