Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Chuck Schuldiner Licks From 1998. The late-great Chuck Schuldiner is a pioneer of death metal as his classic metal group Death formed in Florida in 1984. Their mid-1980s output along with groups like Possessed put death metal on the map and influenced metal musicians from all over the world.
This lesson takes a look at a handful of ideas coming from a live bootleg from 1998 during Death's 'The Sound Of Perseverance' tour and handpicks some tasty ideas from songs such as 'A Moment Of Clarity' and 'Crystal Mountain.' These ideas range from melodically driven ideas, open string tapping phrases, shred-style speed runs, and much more.
There's a reason why metal musicians and fans are still talking about Chuck's music and Death nineteen years following Chuck's tragic passing when he succumbed to brain cancer in 2001. His music and legacy seem to be intact and healthy to this day, and Relapse Records released six brand-new live albums this year from the band's archives, so it's great to see and hear the continued influence and respect surrounding this important pioneer of metal music.
There are some great ideas hiding in this lesson, so dive in and tackle some unique phrases/licks from one of the most talented and respected metal guitarists that has ever walked the Earth.

Chuck is the reason I play guitar today, I heard spirit crusher back in 2002, then went back to scream bloody gore, never been so hooked on a band, sadly I found out that chuck died a year before and I was so upset, but I play his music today to honer him and his legacy with his stealth bc rich 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Rest in peace Chuck, he passed 23 years ago today, far too young, Thank You for all the great music, I’ve yet to have a band impact me as much as Death has. No other band has such a Melancholic and Beautiful sound, Chuck Continues to inspire from beyond the Grave and always will. Let the Metal Flow

When they left the gig, they forgot all of their BC Rich's on the side of the venue (City Gardens, Trenton, NJ) and we chased them down to let them know. Crazy! Saw them on the next two tours as well. Chuck was the nicest calmest dude ever.

Thanks so much for these lessons. I love every Death album. To me Chuck is severely underrated compared to a lot of his contemporaries in the thrash/death genre. That dude could play the guitar. A stellar soloist who was also a riff machine. Every record has its own sound. Even though I love the earlier darker albums(especially Leprosy and Spiritual Healing) it was clear that he had way too much to offer not being pinned down playing that type of music. The man was a genius songwriter. I've heard he didn't really like his vocals but I think they're perfect for what he was doing. In all honesty his music was so good it would've been fine if there weren't any vocals. One of the most talented guitar players in the history of metal. He could write insane riffs like a Hetfield/Mustaine but was also in the top echelon of soloists. That's an extremely rare combination.

Awesome vid Dave, for such a mellow-cool guy hearing you sing praises of the OG's of Death Metal shows that having an open mind to all styles makes you a better musician. I definitely know that feeling you described at the end, for me it was hearing 'Strength Beyond Strength' by Pantera back in the 90's on my friend's loaned CD. I was probably 10-11 yrs old at the time and between the clicky kick drums and hacksaw guitar tones I thought the police were going to bust in at any moment. Started a life-long obsession with Dime Darrell, so was for the best I guess!

How did I miss this until now?! I was totally unaware of the new live albums. I was a big fan of Chuck when I was younger, even had a tech-death metal band. Good times! I want to add I was thirteen when I first listened to death metal, it was the covenant album by Morbid Angel, that stuff scared the shit out of me! Now I don't listen to much extreme metal anymore, but dude, check out Blood Incantation.

If you allow me to put a request here, I suggest that you once in a while look into the work of Kai Hansen. Kai is a German guitarist and Band leader. He is regarded as the godfather of power metal and founded two important bands in this genre, Helloween and Gamma Ray. He is also a current member of the "All-Star"-Band Unisonic. I would love to learn some of Kai's rhythm and lead work, especially in Gamma Ray but also in Helloween and Unisonic.

I wish I was more savvy on the different modes of scales, and chords I've been playing a right handed guitar upside down ever since 1997' when I got my very 1st guitar for Christmas that year when I was 7yrs old I'm now 31yrs old and i STILL can't get scales, music comes natural to me I can learn a cover of songs by ear and figure them out in a few mins but when it comes to soloing and soloing fast like Chuck....I dunno it's just never came natural to me....but I think one major thing screwing me in being able to practice more on soloing on the higher frets is I've mainly used like a strat body style guitar and since it's a right handed guitar and I'm left handed I can't comfortably get my hand down low enough to practice playing solos more.....I used to own a Gibson SG which was awesome for me because I could get to those bottom frets much more easily sorta like a Flying V would be like I tried saving up to finally buy a left handed guitar so i can actually practice on a guitar that's completely comfortable for me but i was lied to by some Ebay seller selling an Ibanez left handed Gio but once i recieved it i quickly realized i just bought another right handed guitar i dont need smh

I was going to just ask for a Chuck Schuldiner Lesson and glad you did. The chords riffs I think he mostly is a rhythm guitarist that writes a lot of riffs. I'm not sure what is Chuck Schuldiners trademark techniques but I think its his riff writing and not a lead guitarist.

Pedal-point riffs simmilar to Guthenberg riffs (e.g.: Lack of Comprehension), sometimes he will 16th note the note he is pedaling onto (e.g.: Symbolic, Spirit Crusher). Generally, I think he writes most of his riffs in Natural Minor, Phrygian/Phrygian Dominant and Harmonic Minor (Without Judgment has a pedal-point riff that I think outlines the notes of Harmonic Minor). He tends to avoid Diminished Scales, although he did play some diminished licks in one of the demos. Later on in his career, he used inverted power chords (e.g.: Crystal Mountain) at times, he used the shape of stacked 5ths (e.g.: first riff from Spirit Crusher is based on this idea). These are some of the techniques Chuck used in his riffs for Death and Control Denied.
