As a young guitar student, I learned an important lesson when I realized that the music at the end of the movie The Killing Fields was Recuerdos played on Cambodian instruments, no tremolo involved. I realized I had been striving for perfection when I should have been striving for beauty. I started practicing it without tremolo, just two notes in the melody, rather than 3, making the melody sing, keeping the left hand moving smoothly at the correct speed. It was hard. Then I added practicing the tremolo. Eventually the piece came together.

Lleva mucho tiempo y constancia.

I agree. Using two fingers goes much more against the grain of usual playing techniques. It takes more effort to retrain your fingers. But as you can hear in Ana's control, it can be worth it. Maybe she never reached the equity of picking she wanted while using 3 fingers. Her brilliant technique allowed her to choose otherwise. Listening to both artists, my impression is that her preparation was much better. Russel seemed to be playing a bit "from the hip".

Vidovic may have the best right hand of all of the virtuosi. Her power and tone are without peer. The modern right hand technique tends to teach players to have more of an angle with the knuckles than Vidovic shows - but I think her way is superior. When the album: 'Columbia/CBS presents John Williams' came out in 1964 the new standard was set by JW. Till that time we had Segovia, Bream, Yepes and some others. But this was so clean, technical and yet subtle, this was the beginning of a new approach. When it comes to technique, voice separation, lyriscm etc one should listen to this. John Williams played on a Fleta with a lot of depth. Ana Vidovic and David Russell are definitely followers of his approach. So for me, these performances are nice, but of another level then that of JW.

My guitar teacher told me years ago, that DR had the smoothest tremolo of any player he’d seen. I’ve watched Ana play this before and noted that she only uses i and m for her tremolo. David of course! Three fingers makes the deal, better flow, no stops, continuity of the melody. Ana gives the change with the phrasing in an elegant way, but David is the Master. He is a monster.
@Koga-Ed2 жыл бұрын
In my opinion there are parts of David’s playing where that flow is hampering, even sloppy. I’ve heard better players with the 3-finger technique. Ana choose the 2-finger way because it makes a more consistent and even tone which helps the flow of the tremolo enormously. But it takes years of solid practice to master it, because it demands a lot more endurance of the fingers and a counter-intuitive coordination. When I hear Ana play it, she truly reached that ultimate master status 💜.

The piece is all about the melody in tremolo reigning supreme and the accompaniment serving it at a lower volume. It doesn’t matter as a listener if the tremolo is played by 2 or 3 fingers as long as the balance favors the tremolo -that’s what makes this a virtuoso piece. In these recordings I think David demonstrates a better balance with the tremolo louder than the accompaniment.
