I love that you fix the car in the way that most of us have to, outside in the cold, not in the workshop , on a ramp with a heater on . I totally agree with your thoughts on mental health, and so many of us get enjoyment from, fixing, driving and even watching other people fix and drive interesting vehicles . Keep up the good work.

Top tip, when joining wires like in this video, cut the wires at different lengths so that all the bulk from the joins are not at the one location. Makes for a tidier job.

I really love your vids. I have a S3 saloon currently 2021, but used to have an S4 2015. Sadly sold the S4, but S3 is ok. neither were or are remapped. The S4 was was my Audi so free and made unregulated, same for the S3 but I do not need or wish to drive at over 320kph/200mph any more. Although to fix certain things, you and other UTube vids have been invaluable. Something came up strange was my 2021 Audi S3 for oil change was a Hex, not a torc as expected. Even my contacts at Audi did not know why, other than possibly it was an older generation, not sold and registered a bit late....Not really an issue, but worth a note to inform buyers that a new car, perhaps is not a NEW Car. I have a really good contact who sent me a replacement sump plug at no extra cost, as he too was surprised

Done the same jobs on a mk1 TT. When researching the job, everyone said replace the dipstick tube as its very rare they don't break!!
@volkswizard3 жыл бұрын
I should have known! Maybe just hoped it had been done before as I've been changing them for 10 year plus! I guess if nobody has been working in the region of the tube it will survive as it's braced by the trim piece.

That little green sensor is very familiar having owned a MK1 TT 225. I wonder did the S3 suffer the same dash issues that the TT was plagued with, display tantrums, inoperative fuel gauge?

Great video, excellent camera work. Have to confess I skipped through a bit to get to thermostat change. Don’t think my arthritis in my hands would cope too well though! Love the hat! 👍🏻
@volkswizard3 жыл бұрын
Hey Greg! Thermostat is sooo common on these and so important. It is a bit fiddly to do for me but compared to Mk5/6/7 it's childs play. The hat is from an Austrian ski hat company called Eisbar (ICE Bar) had a few over this years but this one is falling apart so swapped to Barts for my best beanie (too good for workshop)

regarding the thermostat, how does a stuck open one damage the engine, i had the issue where it would get to 90c and then drop, changed it and it fixed the issue, i thought it was only if they got stuck closes you had issues.

Great video, I like the videos that show cars like this S1, it's a change from testing new cars (although that's good too). I totally agree with your sentiments at the start of the video - not everyone is lucky enough to have a brand new/nearly new car, but there's something immensely satisfying about keeping a modern classic like this going - I'm hoping to get a modern classic at some point (from yourself, perhaps 😉) - Mk5 R32 is top of my list!

Great video , makes me miss my S3. Noticed the PCV looked a bit gunked up on the close ups where the dipstick broke. Would be a good video as it’s pretty common on these engines.

Cars certainly offer many of us something that keeps us interested, happy and motivated ... it does feel a bit like many of us are starting to mourn the end of the combustion engined cars ... 2030 looms ever closer and 2025 will likely see the introduction of GPS speed limiters that can’t be turned off .. (on all new cars from then onwards) ... enjoy these cars now & have a blast while you still can ...

Great video Andrew. I purchased my 2002 S3 in Oct. 20 and absolutely love it. 1st day, on checking the oil, the top of the dipstick disintegrated with some of it going down the holder so I feel your pain! Looking forward to more of the same in 2022.

I’ve owned 3 of these they are fantastic, once I jumped out of mine and into the new shape (at the time) 05 reg A3 courtesy car from Tetbury Audi I couldn’t help but think the old shape car was the last really solid build in comparison. Nice weight to the doors and boot etc, real aluminium mirrors, interior felt really special even had a TV! Don’t get me wrong I eventually owned the next generation and liked that too but it wasn’t as special as this shape in luxury.

Hey dog bite, I've never had a car on PCP before for very long but it's kind of liberating and easier than I thought. And time it well and it can be great value, such great value I can't actually afford to change to anything else as the market has shifted so much in the last year from lockdown and loads of stock cars to massive lead times. I just felt saying a Clubsport was 'real world' needed some backing up as it's a lot more expensive today than it was in Feb 2021.

Do VAG have an equivalent of RealOEM? I use it loads finding part numbers for my BMW’s. I’m tight to so tend to shop around where I can. I’ve just done the rocker cover and gaskets on my 130 and needed new spark park sleeves. People on eBay were selling OE ones for £8 each….£2 from my local dealer.
@volkswizard3 жыл бұрын
You do need to be careful of main dealers being cheaper than ebay sellers, it happens with VAG too. Funny you should mention RealOEM, used it for years for VAG but stopped recently as something happened to it. There are loads of alternatives and I use then to ensure the parts are correct.
@sarcastixx743 жыл бұрын
On the home page of RealOEM you can see a link to other makes, Audi/VW amongst a lot of others. The Audi one still works fine, only gripe I have is that you need to have a good idea of what the subgroup number might be so it doesn't work as well as the BMW one where the descriptions are there in all the subgroup pages to guide you. Just had a quick look, it does seem that a lot of the images/descriptions are missing randomly from some catalogues, hopefully a temp glitch as I do use it when I need it.

The temperature sensor housing(coolant flange) is a common fault. It cracks and coolant drips down onto the gearbox. It's a cheap fix
@volkswizard3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike, I am sure we will need that one day. Common issue on loads of cars from Mk2 GTI to Mk3 VR6 all because plastic doesn't like heat cycles forever. At least plastic is cheap and it looks pretty accessible on 1.8T

now then young damon, now this "may" be an old wive`s tale..............but i`ve ALWAYS been told that you don`t drive around with the fuel light on, ESPECIALLY on an older car where there may be deposits in the bottom of the fuel tank which can be "supposedly" sucked up into the fuel injection system causing all sorts of problem`s, now we know dear old "uncle frank" (bless his departed soul") was not the most generous man when it came to his F1 driver`s, but surely he told you this was a no-no except on a qualifying lap as it would cause excessive damage to his engines, so who or whom is correct, the fallacy that`s been going round for years or dear old uncle frank ....👻👻👻👻
