Hi Im driving down to Imola for the WEC late April 25 from the UK. Looking at the big popular mountain passes they will most likely still be closed then , can you recommend any epic roads/routes with switchbacks etc? Ill be in my 718 GTS 4.0 😊

The VW Golf 7.5 was the high water mark for this model. Better function and less unnecessary razzmatazz in the finishing.

That was excellent Andrew. I’ll be dipping into it next year to follow some of those roads. If you’d like some other great roads and are getting closer to Nice, I would recommend the Col De Braus from Sospel. Excellent hairpins all the way down. And of course you can do the Turini from Sospel, descend to L’Escarene and come back up the Braus’s hairpins to Sospel.

Did this last year in my 981 Cayman GTS. Epic road. However, you missed some good roads getting to it. Should ha e turned right on the D28 up to Beuil. Left to Valberg and down some mega roads to the top of the D2202. Tunnels all the way down North to South. But you'd go up and down anyway. Glad you liked it. I loved it.

Pretty sure I did that route as well went through Beuil and Valberg (where the cops were busting people in 30 kph zone). And we ended up at that tight junction which I decided against following. If it’s the same road, it would have been fine in my 981 GTS but a bit too rough and badly surfaced for my GT4 (but it did it unscathed) 👍

Where's the shortcut to get the entire thing booted up quickly when you start up on a cool morning and left the ac going full blast last time you drove? No matter how proficient you get with the sliders, this thing is a design fail.

Superb vid Andrew. I am presently in the south of France. Did I understand correctly the RN 97 is the road to enjoy? I am in ST Raphael so would love to drive it. Or is the drive from Isola 2000 to Nice the road to take? Any info would be great. Many thanks. 🙏

Superb video & great car. Can I ask, did you ever consider buying a 718 Spyder? And what made you actually decide on the GT4 rather than the Spyder? Many thanks 👍🏼

Thanks Barry. I did very much consider Spyder but after the brilliant hood on my 981 Boxster GTS, how could I explain to wife that I’d paid double and now had to stop to put hood up semi manually?

The red / gold combo is a winner for reasons I previously states (AMR). Fair-play for putting over 6k miles in a year on your car. Not having climate as standard on a car of this price is a "right liberty"! I think Porsche would struggle to justify it from any perspective. Similarly, main-dealer used-car prep' is all about maximising their bottom-line by minimising their outlay, even for glaring faults. Porsche are not alone here.

Thanks for the tip, I’m headed in that area next week and just added that to the itinerary. Could I get your thoughts on the cylinder deactivation on the GT4? Came to mind because you mentioned turning it off. Opinions as far as I’ve read are split. Would you think they’re potentially problematic for the longevity of the engine? Thanks!
@HDD96
@HDD96 4 күн бұрын
The cylinder deactivation only works in 6th gear, and to my understanding it switches equally between all cylinders in order to avoid uneven use
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 4 күн бұрын
I just don’t like the feel of the engine with cylinder deactivation on, it’s far from seamless and undoubtedly longevity isn’t the primary concern, lowering emissions is which usually comes with some sort of penalty in the longer term. Have fun, hope you are lucky with the weather🌞

I really like your practical perspective in terms of letting perspective drivers know about whether they need cards or cash and the hotels available up in those mountains. I would love to do a trip similar to this one but convincing my better half would be the main hurdle lol. Great video, thanks a lot. Hope Mrs. Volkwizard enjoyed it too.

Hi Neil, thank you, I did enjoy it if this helps your other half - Chalet Marano was a great base and that helps a lot! We've been there twice now so we know it well and there are good restaurants in the town. Also having good stop over hotels on the drive down helps - evening food either in the hotel or nearby and good parking available are lways on my checklist!

A big part of the problem is in terminology. And odd nobody is talking about this. The US summer tire is the UK performance tire. In the US the name ALL SEASON (3 season) refers to UK SUMMER (3 season) A UK All season ( 4 season ) is equal to the US All “weather” tire category. We use different names to describe different tire categories.

In the southeast US, we have a very popular and fun road known as the Tail of the Dragon - it's a long, winding mountain road. As fun as it is, there are plenty of other winding roads that are just as fun, if not more, and since they're not as well known, they're not crowded like the Tail of the Dragon.

VW are on their knees like most German car manufacturers. £42 for a Clubsport. Plus options. Absolutely mental!! Reduce manufacture and lower volume. Increase profit per unit. And mugs still buy them at £500 pm.

Great car, great roads and great video. Thanks so much for sharing. It took me 7k miles (in 6 months) to bond with my 718 spyder too. I have a few mates who don't do road trips and after 1k miles in 6 months or so sold their 718 GT4 / Spyder. They are slow burners but once they click I think all the doubts go. I've done most of those roads but not red rock, it keeps evading me, next time. Great hotel too, considering I've been paying €30 for parking and €25 for breafast (each) in most hotels we stayed in France / Italy this year, €170 all in is good value. Clamp those valves open and keep up the good work 👏🏻 PS loved the straw hat flopping from side to side 😂

Regarding the carbon buckets. The only person that would say it's sour grapes has never driven long distance with them. The journalists insisting that they are fitted only have to have the car a few hours. I was almost convinced to buy one until I had a test drive on the road. Following that, I sought out one with 18 way seats. much better for everyday use.

GT cars are all about the sense of occasion you just don't get that with heavy 18 way seats.

@nathanwild811 having driven both on the road and track, the buckets are great for a few hours on track but no way I would have them on a road car. Bear in mind what a GT car stands for. The 18 way seats take nothing away from the sense of occasion & are essential if you are actually using the car to drive any distance.
