Today we delve into the world of foot sweeps (ashi waza) for no gi jiu-jitsu. For our work, we’ll focus on using the underhook to form a good upper body connection with our partner. This will let us pull and push our partner around; in order to sweep the feet it’s important to generate movement through grips. Our first attack starts with a cross-body osoto gari - a great throw, and an excellent way to get your partner moving around. The osoto is a legit throw in its own right and you’ll have a good chance of landing it off the underhook. We have a followup ready - de ashi barai, where we sweep the unweighted foot to bring both feet (hopefully) off the floor. Our second attack uses another forward throw, uchimata, to set up kouchi gari - a great ashi waza attack which feeds into a knee pick as well. Finally we have a rear throw, ouchi gari, which is a perfect complement to the forward throws (osoto and uchimata) we begin with. Practice all three and you’ll have a respectable arsenal of footsweep attacks.
