This is great training material. My department is on a budget, and I'm looking to build a forcible entry prop. Would it be worth the cost savings to use wood, or should I just bite the bullet and go metal? Any layouts, plans or ideas?

I'd recommend going with metal as your main frame - Sorry Sam I don't have any plans for F/E props, but I have seen many on the Internet - Try a google search for "home made firefighter forcible entry props" and you should get some hits to point you in the right direction.

Next time you have a fire at an abandon structure ask chief if you can remove the front door metal guard railing/door. Most old homes in certain areas have these on the front doors. Use that and use plywood to sandwich around it and you have a door that can take a beating for training purposes.
