Here are three fun guitar exercises.. these are a bit more practical and easy then the last set that Aidan Scrivens and I showed you.
I actually made a performance based on the string skipping exercise because I found it to be immediately both Musical and Modal.
These 3 are easier to dive into, but they do require the same amount of focus to execute properly... so they are just as valuable!!
to take the free 14 day trial of the Masterclass.. We just added four new episodes - Drum programming, ProTools Tips, The Lydian mode, and Amp tones!
Thanks for your support!

While I would never say that Tim's lessons are easy or simple, I enjoy them because what he presents is very usable and musical. The most important for me is that the material is also attainable! Some players give lessons on over-the-top shred stuff that is impossible for an old arthritic guy like me and their stuff is almost never really all that musical. Tim, what you do is great. Keep up the good work and thank you!

If you can, give the mast class a try for a couple weeks. When I first started, most things were way over my head. But, as you wrote, Tim's presentations always provides something with which you can pull usable stuff. For a while, the entire course was simply a lesson in mechanics. But, after a few months, the theory of what was being shown really starts to come through - all of which was very musical.

On the speed exercises, I have a variation that has worked for habituated “muscle tense” players. I call it the “anti-speed exercise”. It does result in an increase in relaxed performance, therefore ultimately an increase in speed. It’s simple, counterintuitive and effective. Once you have a given speed exercise at a medium tempo, if you are playing tense at all, each group of four (or eight) repetitions should be incrementally decreased in speed along with a conscious attempt to defeat the connection between action and motivation. To become bored, unmotivated and yet still continue to act. You bring the exercise right to the edge of it becoming disconnected and hold it there as long as possible, up to 5 minutes. What happens is that as you slow it down and focus on being invested in the opposite of speed, you start to tap into your autonomic nervous system. The exercise becomes like breathing. Then repeat the exercise from a slightly faster starting tempo. It has worked for many of my students who cannot disconnect speed from muscle tension.

Thanks for that, it was great!! That part at 8 minutes made me remember a part of Brasileirinho!! There's a very old video in YT of Ozielzinho playing it clean and my brain can't process it! hahaha

The 3rd exercise is actually from Frank Gambale and can be found in his chopbuilder course along with other great exercises. Interestingly a very young Dave Hill appears in the video as a student of Gambale.

That's a beautiful natural wood PRS. Looks like a fine orchestral instrument. Tim, what are your thoughts on keeping all practice drills musical. Since taking up the guitar, there seems to be 2 camps, those who make everything musical and those that exercise much more disciplined.

Excercise#2...after playing with bad habits for 40+ years, I constantly revert back to 12th fret down -13th fret up -15th fret down -12th fret (first string) down - 15th fret up ( 2nd string ) - 13th fret down - etc...from decades of learning that from 2nd string to first string, same direction in picking...this is kicking my ass....LOL fun. but kicking it.. cool

Sorry if this is old news to you, but in case not: 5 minutes before bed and 5 minutes when waking up for a week and that problem will be gone. The mind will be working at it and form the necessary neural connections.

I am probably saying something obvious to the most, the 3th exercise work also on the other set of strings ( 2-4-6) using exactly the same shapes. Basically you move the exercise up one string and down 5 frets and you have exactly the same patterns and note in a different set of string. Now harmonize the scale in the 2nd set of string and see how it combines with the 1st set, and you basically have the whole picture. Sorry English is not my language I hope somebody understand what I am saying here.

One thing you don't actually say (although you play it) is that in Exercise #1, on the way DOWN, it's pull-offs every other note, and not hammer-ons.

Loved this one, thanks Tim! Quick question, in the intro sequence, what chord progression are you playing over? Or are you just playing all the chords in the key of C in ascending order? Just so damn musical! Thanks again - love your channel!

The part where Tim said that it sounds more musical half speed? That because, in my opinion, most things are more musical when played more slowly if you play them well. I think speed in general, except in small doses, is overrated.

Sorry, but I think these types of "gymnastics" are counterproductive. Good for selling to the uninformed but not for the development of form, tone, and fluency.
