I worked at a nursery almost 30 years ago and we were responsible for bringing red, white, and purple desert rose into America. We had an extensive hybridization program going on which produced some of the most beautiful blooms at that time. Now there are crazy double bloom flowers and even crazier colors. I still have a plant that I hybridized with a deep red bloom with black fringes. It's my baby. Older than my 22 year old son. I cross pollinate it with a red and white I have and get some decent plants but nothing compared to what's out these days. If curious, look up John Lucas, Tradewinds south nursery. Big mama desert rose. You may see a pic of a huge specimen we had (big mama). Disney world wanted to buy it for $2000 back in 91.

I bought some seeds years ago and forgot about them. 2 weeks ago I put them in wet paper and then in a bag and left it. 1 started sprouting after 2 weeks. Amazing that 1 survived for years. After that I just put it in regualr soil, seems to be doing good. Will however replant in shallow pot with sand and dirt when it's bigger.

it's probably error of those that purchase them. I bought a 100 pack seeds and likely was sent about 150. I have planted 80 seeds a few days ago and so far 71 have sprouted up. Would have to see if the rest will germinate in a few days

I have a half-a**ed approach to many things in my life, including the growing of plants (mainly cactuses and now adeniums). I've read a lot of people's advice about their preferred custom potting mixes, and they're always different. So I long ago gave up on trying to choose one. It just seems like too much trouble, and in my experience it's unnecessary. Whatever kind of mix your plant needs, just put together a mix that you think will meet its requirements. Well-draining? Then make a mix that's well draining. The components and the ratios don't matter. Every time I plant new seeds, I just throw together different things that achieve the results that I want. I'll put in cactus mix, sand, pebbles, whatever I feel like putting in. Does it seem right? No, then I'll add something else. If it needs to be well-draining, then I make a mix that seems like it will be well-draining. I also don't use any anti-fungal stuff and I haven't started my adeniums in sand. I have one nice adenium arabicum from about a year ago, and I just planted five new kinds and two have sprouted. (It's only been a few days, so I'm not worried about the other three kinds.) I'm not saying that the method shown in this video isn't superior in some way, but I've done well with my half-a**ed approach. Now, there are things besides the potting mix that I've become consistent and less half-a**ed about. I use covered seedling trays and keep the soil moist enough that there's plenty of condensation on the lid of the container. (But again, I used well-draining soil so the seeds don't become waterlogged.) I also use a heating pad and a temperature monitor to keep the seeds warm. And I use LED lights so they get plenty of light. When the seedlings are "big enough" I'll open the little vents on top of the tray's lid, and eventually I'll take the top off altogether when the seedlings are "big enough." I'll keep using the heating pad until I feel like the seedlings don't need to stay warm all the time. But notice that it's just a matter of when I feel the timing is right. My philosophy is that I treat all of my plants the same, basically (well, the cactuses get less water than the adeniums), and if some plants don't survive they weren't the right plants for me. I'm too unorganized to try to keep track of the specifics of what's supposedly ideal for each plant. It works well enough for me.
@Andulamb Жыл бұрын
I discovered that I'd overlooked the seeds for three other kinds of adeniums so I planted those to give me a total of eight new types of adeniums -- five arabicums and three socotranums. I didn't do anything special with the seeds (as I described above. I had five seeds of each type and only planted two of each because I don't need FORTY adenium seedlings. All eight types of adeniums sprouted: both seeds for six of them and one each of the other two. So there you go. For me, the half-a**ed approach has worked just fine.

I just got some seed form amazon as it was my only source as the nurseries here do not have it. It really depends on the seller and the number of seeds your buying. I brought a pack of 20 and got 28 sent to me. So far after 1 week 12 have sprouted. I am happy with that since it was only $12. The more seeds you get the more likely you will get some to sprout. That being said it is still a crap shoot.

@GardenTips8 ай бұрын
Yes I have grown both in sand as well as cocopeat. Results were better with cocopeat. Water once after sowing the seeds and again after 5 days to 1 week, preferably with the antifungal mixed in water. Then after sprouting max twice weekly watering even if you shift to sunlight.
