Feridun Hürel (1951), Onur Hürel (1948) and Haldun Hürel (1949) were all born in Trabzon.
In 1958, the family moved from Trabzon to Istanbul. The affinity to musical instruments of the three brothers starts with their father Murat Hürel giving them an accordion as a gift.
On November 27, 1965, they took to the stage for the first time, at the Kamer Wedding Hall. In 1966, they teamed up with a friend from their neighbourhood, forming their first band, the “İstanbul Dörtlüsü” (“Istanbul Quartet”). Since the band members at the time did not have the money to buy instruments, they appeared at their concerts with instruments which they had rented. Throughout those years, they participated in many music competitions with
instruments that they had either borrowed from friends or rented. They ended up achieving na lot of success in the music competitions in which they had participated. Following those competitions, Feridun Hürel, who was at the time only 17 years old, received an offer from
the “ Selçuk Alagöz Orchestra”, which he then also joined. Haldun Hürel and Onur Hürel continued to make music under the band name of “Biraderler”, until later also joining the
“Selçuk Alagöz Orchestra”. Later on, upon leaving that orchestra, the three brothers decided to form their own band, “3 Hürel”, consisting only of themselves, which is something that they had always wanted. This took place at Istanbul’s Kabataş pier at 4 in the morning on July 20, 1970. As “3 Hürel”, they released their first record in 1970, titled “Ve Ölüm / Şeytan Bunun Neresinde”. Throughout the 1970s, they released many records with the “Diskotür” label. With their LP “3 Hür-el”, released in 1972, the band ended up winning Turkey’s first “Golden LP” award. The band has a very important place within the history of Turkish music, especially as they have been creating their own compositions and lyrics for all their songs. A great deal of those songs has been written by Feridun Hürel. Furthermore, Feridun Hürel is the inventor of the “Saz-Guitar”, a double-neck combination of electric guitar and Bağlama, which he came up with in order for the band to use an East-West synthesis of tunes in their songs. The “Saz-Guitar”
was made together with the Hürel brothers’ father, Murat Hürel, as a result of much hand-workmanship.
In 1974, “3 Hürel” then released their record “Ömür Biter Yol Bitmez / Sevenler Ağlarmış”. As with their other songs, they also wrote the lyrics for that record themselves.
In 1975, due to Onur’s military service, the band’s work was interrupted for six months. This situation repeated itself in 1977, due to Feridun and Haldun also attending their military
service, leading to the band pausing their work for a total of two years. During them doing their military service, Feridun and Haldun lost their mother, which also led to the band
scattering. Feridun Hürel had expressed their devotion to their mother, Malike Hürel, in the 1973 song “Ağlarsa Anam Ağlar”.
After the band dissolved, Feridun Hürel aimed to continue his music career in England, where he ended up moving. 1 year thereafter, he moved back to Turkey and started to work
at the advertising department he had graduated from. He further wrote 5 books.
About his music life, Feridun Hürel says: “Even 500 years after we have died, I believe that someone, somewhere, will say that ‘one love means to die a thousand times - dying a
thousand times and never dying’. Those who love will say they were crying.” This quote is also a reference to the lyrics of one of his songs.
