Why? How often do you need it? I've done high speed reversing and a J-turn once in my life. Swerving, on the other hand, should absolutely be mandatory training.

@@ts757arse OK, so just one example: Trying to explore (honest) strategies of the body guard (and getting the honest part will be the real difficulty here) for his planned interference in these events. Because there are some body guards that still believe in by them taking over the vehicle (by literally kicking the driver out), so as a driver I need to know what to expect. I have turned down jobs for similar reasons (already knew before hand, who I was dealing with).

I'd settle for just being 'able' to reverse for most drivers. Can't tell you how many drivers I've encountered going the wrong way, then act like they have no idea what to do when just backing up 50 feet would solve the problem.

Notice they're using a Crown Vic with a police package. They're designed to do that. It's a little more difficult in a standard family car

Nah… those crown vics are old heavy bygones of another era. A modern car exceeds lateral movements, braking, and acceleration. Example: the Ford Focus RS, a 40k car, is faster around the nuremberg ring than 200k super cars of yesteryear.

With the J-turn you first give a quarter turn the other way to upset the balance of the front wheels, so when you flick it in the opposite direction they louse their grip allowing the spin. When swerving its really important to have your hands at 9 & 3. Anything above that and steering gets way more jerky and sloppy. Also really avoid the brakes. When braking too hard, the front wheels stop spinning and slide meaning you don't turn. The key is as with everything driving "look where you want to go", not at the obstacle. First, you always steer where looking so if you stair at what you don't want to hit, you will subconsciously be drawn to it. Secondly, if staring at an obstacle reaction is to floor the brake which will make you slide into it. Looking at the clear path through makes it psychologically much easier to just steer to safety.

Situational awareness is the most useful tactic in any situation. All of these victims we see these days all have their head in the clouds. Pay attention to what is going on around you. Who is in the car next to you? What's going on 15 seconds ahead or behind you?

Pulled a swerve maneuver on an oncoming turning car who drove into my path of movement on the road. Lucky I swigged a small amount of Jim Beam to calm my ADHD and shot to hell motor function, but the booze kinda helped in terms of limiting my anxiety and stress. Again moderation folks but yeah, it really helped stop my shellshock.

Mmm, nahh. This isn't even the tip of the iceberg when it comes to driving. There are many other ways one could outdrive the police. And just because you dedicate a few hours once in your life doesn't put you anywhere near being an expert. Not even the cops, IMO they don't train nearly enough. And then there's the fact that some folks are natural born badasses behind the wheel and some will suck no matter how much you teach them.

Brakes don't work as well in reverse? That assumes you have those ancient drum brakes, which work terribly in reverse. Even drum brakes that are used on modern cars are just as effective in reverse.

Rear brakes are weaker in modern cars but when you're reversing these brakes will have to absorb the momentum first which hurts the overall braking performance.
