11:20 - You can minimize "shoulder checking" if your mirrors are set properly. Unless you are driving a bus, coach, or tractor trailer, you should not see any of your own vehicle in your SIDE-view mirrors
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 2 жыл бұрын
Not shoulder checking is to driving what not checking to see if a weapon is loaded is to gun safety. Why would you change direction in a 2,000lbs+ vehicle at speed and NOT shoulder check? Shoulder checking is neither optional nor can it be minimized. See this vid for proper adjustment of mirrors: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIXJeGuInZp9iKM Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick

Lol, yes, I hate looking behind me. The thing I am going to hit is in front of me; I just use my mirrors to keep track of cars in or around my blind spot. Also, it throws me out of the center of my lane to twist my body around like that.

Good stuff. Heres a helpful tip to reduce anxiety and frustration...if you have following distance and somebody cuts you off (does a lane change right in front of you) and you get upset, just say to yourself "with my good following distance I helped that person do a safer lane change". Many of these people will cut you off even if you dont have good following distance. So why not just have good following distance? And when someone cuts you off think of it from a different perspective - a helpful perspective. This will reduce your own road rage and reduce your own distractions. And most importantly forgive others for their offensive behavior as Jesus will forgive yours.

Thanks for your helpful videos. When I was learning to drive in the 1960s, the rule about keeping the correct following-distance was: for every 10mph you're travelling at, keep back at least one vehicle length from the car in front of you. So that if your are driving at 50 mph, you should be at least five car-lengths back from the car in front of you. At 60mph stay six car-lengths back from the vehicle in front of you... etc.

This video resonates with me: if there's one positive attribute to my driving, it's I'm almost unflappable at the wheel. Nothing gets me, much to the dismay of my passengers, who'll frequently pipe up with comments, like, "that guy's is going to cut in, don't let him!" and I ignore them. On rare occasions I've even gotten those guys (and they were/are invariably guys, take that as you will) to admit it was unnecessary to get upset. As you alluded to in another video, in start-stop driving, try to keep moving at a slow rate, play the "no stopping"-game (i.e. read traffic/traffic lights and try to avoid coming to a complete stop). It will improve your gas mileage, wear and tear on your vehicle and save you time. A good friend of mine drives a delivery truck, doing fixed itinenaries and he reckons, on a good day, when things work out, anticipating and playing the "no-stopping"-game, shaves 15 minutes of his working day versus just driving along and only slowing down when he really needs to. Also, for the people going for a CDL career, when running as just a tractor or with an empty trailer: resist the temptation of using the "zippyness" of these configurations. Because trucks can really move unloaded (they're also really tailhappy when there's no weight over their driving wheels, which may be less of an issue in the US or Canada, due to the general configuration of trucks over there). Heavy hoofing it in those configurations will kill your fuel economy like you wouldn't believe... it's not linear. It's not because you're light you're not able to burn a ton of fuel rushing.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan Verschueren - Thank you for your comment and great information. When running a truck without a trailer, we call that bobtailing. And you are right - they are zippy without a trailer. Yes, if you can keep your vehicle moving - it's going to save you time. As I tell people, making more miles over the course of the day in a large vehicle is not about going faster, but maintaining a higher average speed for a longer amount of time. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

A GREAT tip, and one almost never heard, is the one on selecting a vehicle that you as a driver can manage from the standpoint of size, maneuverability, lines of sight from the driving position etc. So often I've heard, "I want a big, heavy vehicle so that I'm protected in a crash!" That's a sham, a delusion - and a danger to others as well as yourself - if you cannot safely handle it in daily driving.

Speaking of distracted driving, in my high school driver's ed class back in the late 1990s, before cell phones were prevalent or smartphones even existed, our classroom driver's ed instructor bragged about regularly applying her makeup, including mascara, while driving. She had some way of using the rearview mirror to do this. She always looked fine, so she was good at it. She didn't recommend that we as her students do this, but I found it bizarre even when I was 16 that a driving instructor would either do this much less talk about it to a group of high school students. I wonder if she has since mastered texting while driving & brags about this to her classes. No, I never did any of this myself, feel most of us were probably intelligent enough to know this wasn't appropriate driving behavior, but you never know...

Love your videos! Things you might add are: People saying blinkers give them the right to change lanes whenever they want People driving at night with their lights off Knowing that semi trucks have big blind spots. Don't match speeds there. Also, they often need to make wide turns. Anticipate and don't try to cut around them. Insurance scammers and brake checking. Get a dash cam. Good for resolving accident faults, as the other person will try to lie their way out. Or download files and give to police to help the innocent, as a witness. Keep up the great work!

You could be right or you could be dead right is true. If I am not sure the other driver is going to yield, I'm not risking it. I have an old friend who got his license not long before me, drives less, but totalled 3 cars in his lifetime because of his "If he has to yield I'm not going to! Either he learn's the rules or we are going to crash and he is going to pay, I don't care" mentality. He survived all those. And the other party's insurance has always paid his damages. But you never know when something you lose in an accident cannot be restored with money. I still drive the same car since I got my license. No accident. One time I hit a curb when we were trying to drift in an empty lot. But that's the worst I ever got. Not even a scratch other than that.

I'd like to see you make a video in Brampton, Ontario. The people in that community have no regard for any road safety rules. They speed everywhere - 70 in a 50, 85 in a 60. They follow too closely, they have no regard for other drivers. Anti-social community, very dangerous driving.

Hey Claudees - thank you for your kind words. It is me that owes you a thank you. In all the years I've been teaching, I'm sure no one has asked me that question about how to stay safe post driver's licence. Little doubt, it was a challenging question; I gave the question considerable thought. Even with all my knowledge, experience and ability it was a complicated response. The biggest consideration was the difference between traffic regulations, predictability and social driving. Social driving is how drivers interact on the highway mixed with certain cultural expectation. The interaction between these aspects of driving create instances that some times result in crashes. Thank you Cheers Rick

On the flip side. There is practically nothing you can do to prevent a rear end collision by a distracted driver when you are stopped at a light. Both my wife ane I had this happen to us within a year of each other. Sadly, you can't always see a bad driver coming at you from behind.

Hi Rick, how about when the traffic flow is higher than the speed limit? I can’t keep up with the traffic flow. There's a very narrow road on my way to work without lines separating the road. The posted speed limit is 30km but everybody drives 50km. I can't do that. So there’s a huge line behind me. The driver behind tailgates, honks, flashes the lights. It's crazy. My way to work is a huge nightmare. I go through very difficult roads. Another one is a tiny road with a canal on my side (way back from work). The speed limit is 50km but everybody is driving 70km. I am afraid to fall in the canal, so I go 50km driving everybody crazy behind me. It's a nightmare to drive in the Netherlands. They only respect the speed limit if there's a camera.
