The inward forces gives compression...and ....outward forces indicates tension but you said reverse....

@@SuKunEGO due to the applied load on the arches, the reaction developed are inward or we can say.. Coming towards each other. That is compression. Suppose, in our house, I used a rope to hang my clothes with hanger, for the equilibrium, tension is developed at the support. So, out ward means tension.
