The interval is actually extremely important, and one of the reasons movies are 3 hours long in India. Movies have been around since the 1930s and movie theaters do a lot of business on selling theater stuff (popcorn, chocolates, soda, etc). The interval allows a lot of business and gives people a break. The other reason movies are long is because the movie industry was closely tied to the music industry. Songs/music were sold through movies (there wasn't an independent music industry). Every movie also sold an LP for its soundtrack and songs, and the popularity of the music often drove the success of the movie. It employed thousands of people in the music industry as a result. I remember going every month downtown in Bombay to go buy a record of whatever the latest good movie/music was. To fit music on an LP, there had to be 5-8 songs, and that caused the movies to go long. The economics of the cinema industry infrastructure has changed a lot since then.

@@thesliceoflifepodcast .. The Longest Mainstream/Popular Indian movie is "LOC Kɑrgil" (2003) ... It is 255 minutes .. i.e. 4 Hours 15 minutes. Its a historical wɑr drama + action + musical movie ... I have seen it 2-3 times .. mostly 2nd part .. bcz I like the 2nd half 🙂

There's nothing controversial about you liking 3 idiots over RRR. People have different tastes in cinema and they like different kind of genre. Also RRR and 3 idiots are completely different films. There are hundreds of other Indian movies for you to explore. Next movie you should review is The Lunchbox. It's a must watch. If You want to see movie from south indian film industries then you should watch Super Deluxe and Vikram.

personally i wouldn't recommend jai bhim,777 charlie,sita ramam,viekram because to enjoy them you need some time to get used to indian cinema instead i would recommend the following in order 1)bahubali both parts for sure they are blockbuster epic mega chartbusters from the same director ss rajamouli of RRR and you will also learn some new things about indian culture 2)andhadhun for sure it is a Thriller probably the best i have watched till now 3)Zindagi na mmilegi doobara is a good light comedy chill movie with life lessons 4)Drishyam both parts it's another thriller and is totally mind blowing too 5)Bhaag Milkha Bhaag it's a biography of an athlete but it is THE BEST BIOGRAPHY I have seen till now 6)gangs of wasseypur is a cult classic and to truly get the feel of it you need to be acquinted with indian culture

8:20 .. We have a 10+ minute intermission in theatres for every movie .. in that time people go outside the hall in the lobby area to use washroom or buy some snacks from counter ... In addition to this .. the songs/musicals also kinda act as a mini-break for some to use washroom/buy snacks 11:30 .. India mainstream massy movies are usually mix of multiple genres and rollercoaster of tone change .. Hence they are called "Masala Movies" (Masala means Blend of Spices) ... Thats reflective of Indian food and overall culture of India ... its different than what you grown up in West .. Western movies usually stick to one genre and rapid tone change is very rare. 13:43 .. You not seen H0rr0r genre yet .. I suggest you watch "Tumbbad (2018)" next 19:28 .. My Exact Reaction 😂😂

I will suggest you guys to watch gangs of wasseypur 1 and 2 next. Because for other movies you need more exposure to indian culture if you want to enjoy them completely and have that experience... so my suggestion is Gangs of wasseypur 1 and 2 Lunchbox Padmaavat All three are different genres. This Director primarily focuses on many serious topics but cloaks it in lightheartedness , that has been so that he gets the prime core message across. And that’s what the style he has used successfully. You need to watch his first movie , very similar to 3 Idiots “Munnabhai M.B.B.S” .. a goofy improbable movie, but has a lot of heart , soul and sweetness and a lovely humane message. And he succeeded tremendously because everyone got the multitude of points he made including the Ostentatious boyfriend to whom relationships are all in terms of monetary value , though it’s a small tiny part. The most important message is the education system and different arc of people and their objectives towards what purpose ?

The Oscar snub to RRR reminds me of snub to Michael Jackson for Off the Wall.. Indian cinema is a rival industry, maybe Hollywood prefers people stay unaware of it rather than lose business to it. It’s probably why you never heard of huge global blockbusters like 3 idiots or PK.. American media pretty much keeps American people in an artificial bubble that blocks the world out (except UK)

If you guys are going for Vikram, it has a kind of prequel, "Kaithi". Kind of in the same universe. So, start with "Kaithi" and then "Vikram". Both are like action drama. Jai Bhim(a Tamil language movie), I don't know if you will get some of the contexts in that movie, like every other country, India has its dark side and this movie shows the dark underbelly side of India and how it rectifies it after a long time. True story! Gangs of wasseypur - a Hindi language movie. A good one but a slow movie. Gangs, revenge, drama! I would recommend, "tumbbad", a Hindi language movie. is one of the best fiction, fantasy, and horror movie! "Kantara", a Kannada language movie fantasy, and action (real ritual practices of the spiritual side of India). Good movie! "Super Deluxe", a Tamil language movie. A bit of dark comedy, a bit of thriller. "Lunch box", a Hindi language movie. Light-hearted, drama! "Haider", a Hindi language movie. A dark adaptation of hamlet set in the present era! "eega", a Telugu language movie, is A crazy bonkers fantasy action movie by SS. Rajamouli. The same guy who did RRR! This movie came out before Bhauballi so this was somewhat at the beginning of his successful career.
