The underwear scene u saw in the beginning is called 'ragging'. It's(ragging) a very common thing for university students in South Asian countries. The senior students try to torture or humiliate the freshmen by doing different kinds of things they say. And the freshmen must listen to them. And when the freshmen become senior students they do the same thing with another batch of freshmen. They do this just for fun.

4:42 the swimming pool is in the US i think, not in India... also India has cold regions as well so it's very possible they'd require a heated pool there too
