I've never actually done that.. I'm about a year & a half into drumming & I always just do my lessons & maybe once a week will learn a simple part of a song I like that day or whatever, but that's a cool idea. I need to learn to be more creative without the lessons or copying a song so I'm going to try that starting tomorrow!

Your second floor tom section can be played with two hands as well. That's how I'd play this. It's less efficient that your way, but for those of us who are self taught... this is more likely how we'd learn something like this. In the faster tempo songs... I'd likely turn that into four notes on the floor tom.

I think it really depends on what the other musicians are doing at any given point in the music. If the guitar or singers (or even bass) are doing something more complex it’s a good rule of thumb to simplify or at least compliment. There’s only so much spotlight to go around at any given moment.

For what reason are you playing? If you're playing for yourself, then you'll do good with E.Drums. But if you're planning to play for a crowd like in a live band then that would be a quite a pinch with E.drums.

The risk that when playing complicated beats, that the drummers aims above his or her level, and may not be actually able to play the complex is bit. It is always better to play something basic correctly than to play something complex nearly correctly.

*makes video promoting a totally sensible drum performance philosophy* *is also in a band that fits my taste exactly* oh, so that's why I love your drum philosophy!😂 I'm with you man. Some drummers become so obsessed with the idea of "don't overplay" that they totally miss opportunities to play something awesome that can propel the song to new heights of creativity and impact. The song can actually suffer because of it, but it's worth knowing your genre and the goal of the music. For instance, those 80s pop songs where the drums are all closed hat all the time with occasional flourishes or specifics drive me CRAZY. But then I think about what the song would sound like if the drums changed at every structure element- and I think "Oh. Well that would just be like a completely different song". Now we can debate whether it would be better changing at every new structure section, and for my respect I would probably prefer it that way. All closed hat is a buzzkill to me. However if your goal is to get a danceable groove, and keep it going, closed hat is one of the best places to do that. People like me love the drums to change feels but some people want something they can dance to easily. And people like me love a song to be a whole animal of arrangement ups and downs with a focus on drums. Other people might prefer a song to be a groove that keeps going and keeps the vibe going. It's very interesting. Closed hat is also one of the few places where you get relatively no sustain from a drum kit. So if you want drums to lay back and not take up too much space in a mix, there's not a ton of other cymbals that do that with near no sustain. But some people become so trapped in "not overplaying" that they end up underplaying and making everything sound the same! It's never been about how simple it is or isn't. It's about crafting the perfect part for the SONG. And there is more than one right or perfect way to do that. And it is opinion based too. So yeah
