Improvising over ballads is usually more difficult than improvisation over medium or fast tunes. Why is that? Because you're EXPOSED. Everything is movving sooooo slowwwww. What do you do? How do you spice things up and creating interesting lines? In this episode I'm going to show you 3 strategies I use every-time I improvise over ballads that you absolutely have to integrate into your toolbox. Enjoy!

Have you been trying to learn jazz piano with youtube videos, dvds, teachers but feel
like you're still constantly guessing, can't play any tunes without copying what someone else has played,
and don't know how to connect all the tid bits you've learned?
I went through the same thing but thankfully stumbled upon a learning system I created based on
proven language learning blocks.
The JPS System brings you through 4 main categories of learning,
Theory, Technique, Improvisation and Repertoire.
I'll show you exactly how to utilize our popular system so
you can finally achieve jazz piano freedom: jazzpianoschool...

I just watched your latest podcast about Solo Piano (Level 1: Ballads) and learned a lot. I’m currently working on Here’s That Rainy Day and it’s sounding good to me. I was having trouble with soloing which brought me here and this is great info. I have one question… I can’t reach the tenth comfortably, and I know I can do something like play the 1 and THEN the 7 & 10 but I don’t want to be too repetitive with that motion (or is that okay?) and 1 & 7 alone sounds incomplete to me. Maybe I’m just being picky… do you have any advice?

Thank you Brendon this really helped. By the way you also have an amazing speaking voice. You could also be a radio presenter. Love listening to your sound. How about you play and perform any public domain jazz number so you tube does not restrict ' any jazz ballad. Would really love that. Thank you again.

Can you tell me what scale you used for imporivsation.

Hi @Grizzly bear: thanks for the question! There are many different scales that we use during improvisation, there are also other approaches that don't use scales. I would suggest checking out our other podcast videos about improvisation for more on that.

You could use the sustain pedal to hit lower note first and jump to top note.
