Improvising over ballads is usually more difficult than improvisation over medium or fast tunes. Why is that? Because you're EXPOSED. Everything is movving sooooo slowwwww. What do you do? How do you spice things up and creating interesting lines? I just watched your latest podcast about Solo Piano (Level 1: Ballads) and learned a lot. I’m currently working on Here’s That Rainy Day and it’s sounding good to me. I was having trouble with soloing which brought me here and this is great info. I have one question… I can’t reach the tenth comfortably, and I know I can do something like play the 1 and THEN the 7 & 10 but I don’t want to be too repetitive with that motion (or is that okay?) and 1 & 7 alone sounds incomplete to me. Maybe I’m just being picky… do you have any advice?

Hi @Grizzly bear: thanks for the question! There are many different scales that we use during improvisation, there are also other approaches that don't use scales. I would suggest checking out our other podcast videos about improvisation for more on that.

You could use the sustain pedal to hit lower note first and jump to top note.
