The 60 yard test should have been repeated. Both need to be fully on target for a proper comparison.

I "feel" like the 80 should have been redone because in all honesty I don't know why but I feel like the 3 inch hold their pattern better all the way out. May not have the speed of the 3.5 but I feel like they are the tightest pattern past 45 yards.
@BlueCollarOutdoorsUSA
@BlueCollarOutdoorsUSA 3 жыл бұрын
We will be redoing this test as we now implement a backer behind each target to get the full pattern My thoughts is the 3’s pattern more consistent especially at longer ranges from having to force less shot down the barrel and through the choke thus having less stress in the shot string creating less of a “blowout” pattern

@@MrMblaze8597 3.5 shells are slower because they are pushing a bigger payload with the same powder weight. You can’t just increase the powder because you get into unsafe pressures

Correct stress in the shot string isn’t a good thing and pushing all that shot through the forcing cone into the barrel and through the choke puts stress into the shot string, more so in 3.5’s

The speed on the box of 3" & 3.5" loads are the same. If the speed of the pellets are the same, you can't really say a pellet from a 3.5" load is hitting harder than one from a 3" load. Momentum = mass x velocity. The kick of the 3.5 load is hitting your harder, because you're sending more mass down range. Force = mass x acceleration. Personally, your 3" loads patterned better. I see no advantage in paying extra for 3.5" loads. 3.5" loads are punishing in any light pump gun, & the pattern was not as good. I would take a nice spread out pattern over anything else. Just my observation. Good test, because you only changed one variable (3.5" vs. 3" Winchester loads).

i have always found 3" shells pattern better than 3.5". also you dont have near enough retained energy to kill a turkey at anywhere near 80 yards with #5 lead shot. winchester did testing several years ago and determined that each pellet needs to retain 2ft lbs of energy to penetrate a turkeys skull/vertebrae. if i remember correctly #5 lead shot was capable to almost 50 yards.

3 inch is fine. It would be a long range scenario for it to make any difference I don't want to shoot at 60 yards. And so many will say the 3and1/2 doesn't kick that bad! But even 3 inch turkey loads will slap a shoulder pretty good. Try a 3nd1/2in. Turkey load in a single shot lightweight back pack 12 gauge. The 3" will do just fine. I experienced more recoil than any shell or rifle bullet I've ever fired. Seriously. From a mossberg the recoil is fine. But I still thunk 3" shells are good enough... and not many guns chamber 3and1/2. Unless they're turkey guns or duck/geese guns

I will be using a Browning Gold 10 (26" barrel) with an Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike choke & 3.5" Hevi-shot Hevi-13 #5 shot. 10 gauge limits choices in loads, but this choke & load work very well together. The patterns are wonderful. Gas-operated 10 gauge shooting 3.5" loads kicks less than my 12 gauge pump. My back up gun is my trusty 12 gauge Remington 870 Express. Switch the 28" barrel to a 21" barrel with an Indian Creek choke. I haven't tried the Long Beard loads at this point. I've used mostly 3" Hevi-13 loads #6 shot, & I have some 3" Federal TSS #9. I haven's shot a bird with the Federal loads, but they all shoot nicely out of the Indian Creek choke. When I picked up a used Browning Gold 10, I sold a 3.5" Remington pump gun that I had to a friend. My dad & cousin shoot the 835 (purchased these guns for both of them), & it is a good turkey gun. I don't like the rattle in the stock, but they do shoot great. My dad does better with 3" loads, too. He shot one 3.5" turkey load, & he'll never do that again. :) He'll be 80 this June. He's terrible at estimating ranges, & he's made some very long shots with Hevi-13 loads & a Carlson Hevi-13 choke. Happy turkey hunting to everyone!

It really all comes down to one question....Do I want to take more punishment for a few extra pellets? Clearly, one needs to pattern their gun to find out not only what patterns the best ,but if there is a difference in your POI vs POA. There are alot of folks that believe because the 3.5" kicks harder ,you can kill birds further....and nothing could be further from the truth.In the end does it pattern that much better to endure the extra recoil?

You probably know this but you mixed loads. One is a "high velocity" and the other is "magnum." To make the comparison fair you needed to make both "Magnum" or both "HV." Longbeard XR is made in both flavors in both lengths. One loading has more shot and the other has more powder.

It looked to me like your pattern is just a little high and left. When you shot the 60 and 80 yard targets it looked like you put some extra pellets in the left target when shooting the right target. You can see it good on the slow motion replay. It would have been better if you would have used 3 or 4 foot cardboard and shot them one at a time to prevent crossover. Still a good video. With a 4 foot piece of cardboard you would get a better idea if your pattern was centered. A lot of times with a real tight choke seems to concentrate the shot tighter right in the center of the pattern.

My thought is more shot = more bb s in the kill zone if you have the proper setup. I can put 30-35 bb s in the turkeys head at 50 yds and blow out the whole middle of the target at 25 yds with Longbeard 3 1/2" #5 shot out of a Winchester SXP and Carlsons Longbears choke. 3" only puts about 10-15 in the killzone at 50 yds which is still deadly but in those rare cases where you have to reach out there I think a 3 1/2" gives you more insurance

For a long range 3 1/2 not successful, because velocity is low, expensive and high kick. And also most Farmers have Bikal Break action single barrel shot guns, can use only 3" magnums or lower lengh cartridges. Unfortunately in Sri Lanka not found winchester ammo. Govenment issue S&B corona 32g 2 3/4 No 04(3mm) shells only. Poor velocity and low load. I think big birds most successful works lead pellot, bcz mass determine damage. Without headshot can't down peackos. In Sri Lanka cultivation biggest pest is peacock, Govenment not got action for this. They eat every one crop and harvest. 😢

FWIW, the 3" @1200fps hits harder than the 3 1/2" @1050fps. Basic physics!

Just remember if it's 3 in or 3.5 it takes 1 pellet in the right spot to kill a Turkey .That's what a 75 year old Turkey hunter told me lol.
@BlueCollarOutdoorsUSA

Yes and it takes 1 pellet in the wrong spot to wound a turkey as well I’ve heard that saying tons of times and honestly the “golden pellet” route doesn’t sit with me good

Yes, you have to use 3.5”! Because they don’t make 4” shells. It’s simple folks.

I actually shot a turkey yesterday, 20 yards away from my blind, but I want to go to 3" from my 2 3/4 that I have, and start using a better turkey load then my Kent 4 shot.

bwhnt 1024 very tricky setup but it’s money, I moved my red dot back and used the Tactacam rail mount and locked it in in front of my red dot spaced out enough that the red dot is clear & and unblocked

@@BlueCollarOutdoorsUSA sorry guys didnt see this question. I used the Xbow rail mount from Tactacam right in front of my red dot. Works well but did strip the screw on the 1st one. Thanks for the great videos! 👍🏻
