"It's much better to learn the theory about the stuff you can already play, rather than learning complicated theory that you can't relate to." I completely agree. Oh how I wish I could go back in time and say that to my high school music teacher! Great video. I'm a horn player trying to learn some piano for a composition.
@TheLildrummerboy385 жыл бұрын
But if he taught us the theory after playing it wed know how to apply it to every key
@TheLildrummerboy385 жыл бұрын
You can do this in any key. In the key of c.. the b is the minor flat 5 and the 5 is the dominant... a minor isthe minor key with all white keys so b is the second and has a minor flat 5 and e is the dominant 5.. he used this formula just in D..
@TheLildrummerboy385 жыл бұрын
That being said he taught this progression and altered dominant really well.. this video helped a ton.. and then knowing the theory will help me apply it. But if u want to play it in just the one key or can transpose it without theory then im just whining about nothing

O4:02 Bb major triad in 1st inversion, not 2nd? 2nd inversion has the fifth (F in a Bb major chord) at the bottom. But in any case, the lowest note sounding determines the inversion, and the lowest note in this chord is F sharp, despite the blue keyboard saying G flat. Nice chord, but dodgy theory?
@George-nx8zu4 жыл бұрын
Can you explain what an Alt Dominant 7 is compared to the Dominant 7? I think music theory wise I wish there was a bit more explanation on what's changed. The 5th was raised and the 3rd was lowered, is that it? I think I'm misunderstanding what it is

The Minor 7 Flat 5s are a little confusing to me because its got that Gb from the D Major Scale. Like when I'm constructing chords for the other scale degrees, I should be using just the D Minor Scale right? Or do I have that wrong? NVM: I think its derived from the Harmonic Minor Scale which has the Major 7th scale degree

When playing these types of chords, the most important chord tones are the 3rd and 7th, the rest aren't actually that important. It's the players choice whether or not to include things such as the 5th, sometimes it sounds better without!

In jazz we tend to just notate most chords as 7ths, even though they are rarely played with just the 7th. This leaves it open for the player to decide what extensions / voicing they want to play.

I dont know about the 9th and 11th notes, but I guess they are not diminished since they look like a normal C major chord. And you would have to add the flat 5th and the double flattened 7th (in this case Aflat and Bflat) the diminished 7th chord.

Why for the alt do you think of it as going a semi tone up from the 5 then a triad not just playing the 6th of its Dm
@Piano_Pig5 жыл бұрын
Just personal preference really, probably because if you go a semi tone down from the 5th and do the same thing, that gives a different upper structure triad for the altered chords which is also really nice. It's easy to just remember "a semi-tone above AND below the 5th" instead of the natural 6th and the flat 5.
